Inspired by another thread, which 3 MPs would you love to see having a Portillo moment ?

Mine are:

Caroline Nokes
Jacob Rees Mogg
Jonathan Gullis

Difficult to limit it to 3. However I'd like to nominate

Andrea Jenkyns - horrible Johnson fan and Trump sympathiser who used to be my MP

Philip Davies - utter woman hater who's the MP in my neighbouring constituency

Suella Braverman - I don't think I need to say why. She's just evil.

Gillian Keegan

I am hoping to help with one of those! I would really like to see Rees-Mogg and Lloyd Russell Moyle go.

JoJothegerbil · 25/05/2024 11:13

Mogg
Braverman
Jenkyns

All are despicable and immoral.

I’m generally Tory (probably won’t vote this time) and would love them cleared out. Gullis and Truss get honourable mentions. Conversely would like Mercer and Mourdant to keep their seats but expect they are toast. Need some moderates to rebuild the party as the pendulum will swing back and rather it didn’t become a far right party.

I presume your user name is a clue. Good Luck !

Esther McVey. My MP - the latest in a line of awful Tories in a hopefully previously strong Conservative seat.

I knew her years ago. She cared not one jot for politics. I'm convinced she only went into it cos the presenting work dried up and she loves being famous.

Weird way to get your kicks.

Maybe you had to be there. There's a whole generation that remembers the moment Stephen Twigg ousted Portillo. Stephen Twigg's expression will forever be etched on our memories. It's iconic and so fucking wonderful.

Rees-Mogg for me by the way.

Churchview · 25/05/2024 14:46

For me Rees-Mogg is the living embodiment of the current rash of Tory privilege, Eton, millionaire, sneering, grasping entitled incompetence.

To see him go will be a delight but Priti Patel and Chris Chope (for so many reasons but mainly for filibustering the FGM bill) will be punch the air moments too.

God they are loathsome blisters.

In case you weren't there!

It's Portillo's face that's priceless Grin

I worked on the election for a news channel that evening until 2200 and declined an election party to go home and watch everything unfold. It was GLORIOUS watching so may lose... Norman Lamont, Edwina Currie, David Mellor, Neil Hamilton...
Here's the Portillo moment - terrible quality mind.

Anyway my three are:
Rees Mogg
Braverman
Jenkyns

But I will have a large sip of champagne if (when) the following lose:
Gullis
McVey
Patel
Jenrik
Afolami
Badenoch
Baker
Berry
Chope
Cleverly
Coffey
"Meat Tax" Coutinho
Francois
Hunt
Shapps
Duncan Smith
Sunak
Truss
Whately

Might be quite drunk by sunrise

Braverman
Dineage (local reasons)

BananaLambo · 25/05/2024 15:46

Mogg with survive sadly. In that corner of the world you could stick a blue rosette on a baboon and it would still get elected.

Clavinova · 25/05/2024 15:56

I wonder if it will be Angela Rayner - I see that George Galloway already has a candidate in place to challenge her seat;

God can you imagine!
Who would go to the polling station, see JRM on the ballot paper, and think 'oh, yes please'!

RoobarbAndMustard · 25/05/2024 16:27

LlynTegid · 25/05/2024 10:39

Liz Truss
Jacob Rees Mogg
Christopher Chope (not sure if he is standing again)

Same ones as me.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 25/05/2024 16:28

I can’t see either Truss or Braverman doing tv train journey programmes, though at a stretch I can see both doing a round-Britain trip in a Russian tank.

But that wouldn't be a Portillo Moment - a PM moment is when a hard-hearted smug git who's been in office too long gets his/her comeuppance.

How many Mumsnetters have booked annual leave for 5th July so that you can watch the results come in overnight?
I was working that day after the 1997 general election, hav8ng stayed awake until after the glorious Portillo Moment.
I remember Cecil Parkinson saying after quite a long while 'Oh good we've got one' as the first Tory win came in. They must have wondered if they were going to win any.
It was amazing feeling the next day after 18 years. I thought the Tories would lose in 1992 but Major scraped through and we had to suffer 'Back to Basics' and all that nonsense for the next 5 years.

I'm not working on the Friday, hope I can manage to stay awake for the results coming in.

Jenrick
Braverman
Probably Rees Mogg.

Many of my choices are no longer standing- probably because they were the more effective and therefore dangerous ones who are off to other jobs.
