Inspired by another thread, which 3 MPs would you love to see having a Portillo moment ?

Mine are:

Caroline Nokes
Jacob Rees Mogg
Jonathan Gullis

It's about a smug MP who has been in very influential positions in Government, not expected to lose the seat, inflicted damage on the country in pursuit of ideology (Portillo implemented the Poll Tax) and so on.

No baying mobs, just a loud cheer.

That made me think of Kemi Badenoch, Claire Coutinho and Suella Braverman.

I would say the description fits Rishi Sunak to a tee, but if he is re-elected he'll l have to face a leadership challenge after the ignominy of leading the Tories to one of their worst defeats ever. So I'm ambivalent about him.

I'll be happy to see anybody who has been Secretary of State for Justice, The Environment, Education or Health and Social Care go.

And anybody who was previously smug about their 20,000+ majority.

For me the real shock of this election will be if the Lib Dems end up as His Majesty's Opposition Party and I want it to happen so Grinvery much

SpaghettiWithaYeti · 25/06/2024 15:59

Really want to see Braverman go, she didn't seem to have any redeeming qualities. A career politician so focused on climbing the slippery pole that she didn't care who she kicked on her way up it

The Lib Dems ending up as the official Opposition is almost worth a £10 flutter at the bookies.

You do know they’re not in government? I’m not sure you really understand what a Portillo moment is.

There are very few seats that all the polls agree the Tories should hang on to. About 21. Grin

Anniegetyourgun · 25/06/2024 23:58

They'll definitely get more though. More's the pity. They always do. Hopefully not many more this time though. I think even they would welcome a spell in the wilderness, licking their wounds, rebuilding their base, and waiting until people forget. Then they'll be back again, like the cycle of locusts.

Oh me too. I don't think it will happen (quite) but at this point nothing will surprise me.

This would be my nightmare moment having lived under a Lib Dem local authority for over 30 years.

What has Johnathon Ashworth said/ done? I've barely heard a peep out of him.

In my area the Lib Dem council rejects planning applications for blocks of flats that have parking. The developers get approval when they remove the parking. They seem to think that this will result in everyone riding bikes and using public transport. In reality it results in parking hell on all surrounding roads.

Somehow we need to reduce dependency on the car though don't we. We are choking the planet.

I lived fine without one till I was 30 and my son needed hospital care . I still use public transport or walk wherever possible though (and I am disabled)

Michael Portillo recognised why the Tories had lost in 1997, as well as personal dignity in defeat.

I cannot imagine such a response by most of those who have been mentioned on this thread.

Indeed. I remember it well.
I'd like to see Sunak, Rees (fake) Smug, Braverman, Hunt Jimmy Dimly, oh so many really. Plus Cameron, only he's a Lord so no getting shot of him now. Plus some recognition of how Johnson squandered an 80 seat majority.

bellinisurge · 27/06/2024 10:06

Smog would be awesome

Yeah. I really hope people vote to make it happen.

verdantverdure · 27/06/2024 17:51

I'd like to see the ERG obliterated after everything they've done to this country.

I'm not sure I can pick a top 3.
