Inspired by another thread, which 3 MPs would you love to see having a Portillo moment ?

Mine are:

'without a satisfactory explanation of where she was living and why she didn't have to pay the tax. Too many ex-neighbours have come forward to contradict her story.'

All that nonsense about living in a different house from her husband and children requires some clarity even if she doesn't owe the tax - there needs to be a satisfactory explanation to lay the matter to rest.

I'd pay a lot to see something, anything, wipe the smirk off Jeremy Hunt's face. Unless that IS his face - I don't think I've ever seen him not smirking so it might be. Braverman obviously because she is a dangerous loony. For the rest, I'll take whatever you've got.

Unfortunately as I work for a local authority we have been told annual leave requests will not be granted for 4th or 5th July, and I'm on early morning shifts that week too, so an overnighter isn't really an option. By the time I get home about midday on the Friday it should be more or less over bar the shouting - in a good way, I hope.

No there doesn’t. If she didn’t avoid tax or commit electoral fraud it’s nobody’s business except her own.

SabrinaThwaite · 28/05/2024 08:55

Did we ever get a satisfactory answer as to why Zahawi ‘forgot’ to pay £3 million of tax, and then when he was caught by HMRC ‘forgot’ to mention it, despite being Chancellor at the time?

People can live where they like as long as they can pay the mortgage/rent/buy the property with cash. What's it got to do with you? Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton never lived together but managed to have two children while living nextdoor to each other, I believe she said his snoring played a part in the arrangement. I reckon lots of couples would be happier with that set up although most of us can't afford it. It is a recognised set up though known as LAT short for living apart together.

She doesn't owe you any explanation of her living arrangements.

Id quite like to understand why Gove has lived for free in the Foreign Secretary's grace and favour flat, 1 Carlton Gardens for the last few years. It's worth £25 million and has a ballroom - super handy for a bit of entertaining.

Iwasafool · 28/05/2024 16:52

Greater Manchester Police have a released that they are taking no further action in the investigation into Angela Rayner. That should be the end of it.

Not really - it's still inconclusive as to whether she owes any money;

However, the force adds that "matters involving council tax and personal tax do not fall into the jurisdiction of policing" - and details have been shared with HMRC.

The statement ends by saying:

GMP has liaised with Stockport Council and information about our investigation has been shared with them. Details of our investigation have also been shared with His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC)."

They didn't get married either so not a relevant comparison.

Yes - he resigned.

Exactly. Forgetting £3 million really takes some doing.

ThankYouAgainAgain · 28/05/2024 17:04

Rees-Mogg
Steve Baker

Gove was my favourite but he has gone, Thank God.

I wish they would just get on with it.

I need a general election advent calendar to get me through the anticipation.

Tax expert Dan Neidle said Zahawi 'carelessly' payed the wrong amount of tax.

Notonthestairs · 28/05/2024 17:08

Careless in HMRC terms -

The principle of carelessness is similar to that of “negligent misrepresentationn_” in a legally binding contract. This is when a person makes a false statement that they believe is true, but they don’t have reasonable grounds for believing that it is true.
Which was why he was fined 30% of the overall tax bill.

Did you hear the speculation on LBC this morning that Boris Johnson could stand in Gove's seat instead? Grin

It isn't only them, I know a couple who are married and do exactly the same thing. You wouldn't know them if I named them.

How old are their children?

He was dismissed from his ministerial role according to wikipedia but he's still an MP. For now.

No we never have, but he is a Tory so apparently doesn't have to explain.

How is that relevant. They have several children with quite a wide spread of ages.

There was also him claiming heating for his wife's stables on his expenses. Not sure how he managed that, apparently it was down as his second home so maybe he thinks he lives in a stable?

Weird isn't it! Meanwhile if a labour politician borrows a pencil and forgets to give it back they are hung out to dry.

(I am a floating voter and have family members who have been Tory party members (indeed one was an MP) so I am not a hard left winger (admittedly as moderate Tories
they all left in disgust between 2016-2020) )
