Inspired by another thread, which 3 MPs would you love to see having a Portillo moment ?

Mine are:

Caroline Nokes

Mogg with survive sadly. In that corner of the world you could stick a blue rosette on a baboon and it would still get elected.

Bet you fifty quid he won’t. And if he does, I’ll pay up, really ((unlike 50 quid or whatever it was Rishi promised on a dubious TV site)..

And take you for a very, very sad commiseratory drink, too.

Is commisatory a word? If not, I’ve just invented it.

Dearover · 26/05/2024 21:22

Braverman
Rees-Mogg
Jeremy Hunt

Shinyandnew1 · 26/05/2024 21:24

Gillian Keegan
Andrea Jenkyns
Jonathan Gullis

there are many more though…!

@Clavinova your wishful thinking depends on a swing away from Labour in that seat. That hasn't been the trend. Galloway only got into the seat he did because Labour couldn't field a replacement candidate.

Also it's a London seat - Galloway's candidate is going to be tarred with his master's homophobia and his anti abortion beliefs in a city with a lot of people who have liberal values.

But do keep on dreaming.

Which is a London seat? Angela Raynor’s Ashton seat is in Greater Manchester, just round from Rochdale. I agree she is unlikely to lose, the Rochdale by election was a complete mess. It will be interesting to see what the Rochdale results are this time round.

Whoops, got her seat mixed up with the other (former) Labour person Who Must Not Be Named.

Still, the same sort of terms apply - Manchester is a University city after all and Galloway's brand of 'values' isn't going to go down well with large numbers of people. You can't extrapolate from Rochdale.

margegunderson · 26/05/2024 21:40

Rees Mogg
Conor Burns
Braverman

Difficult to limit it to 3. However I'd like to nominate

Andrea Jenkyns - horrible Johnson fan and Trump sympathiser who used to be my MP

Philip Davies - utter woman hater who's the MP in my neighbouring constituency

Suella Braverman - I don't think I need to say why. She's just evil.

Snap! Actually hoping they all stand just to enjoy the schadenfreude if they get the boot.

Gonners · 26/05/2024 22:09

@itsgettingweird - Braverman. She's my MP. She's worse than the media portray her.

That is simultaneously horrifying and totally unsurprising.

Aliceisagooddog · 26/05/2024 22:21

Wes streeting, jess Phillips, keir starter.

LuluBlakey1 · 26/05/2024 22:29

Andrea Jenkyns
Jonathan Gullis
Liz Truss

All vile specimens of humanity.

LuluBlakey1 · 26/05/2024 22:32

And:
Suella Braverman
Kemi Badenoch
Boris Johnson

LuluBlakey1 · 26/05/2024 22:33

Gove would have been my top choice.

DownWithThisKindOfThing · 26/05/2024 22:38

Mogg
Hunt
Braverman

LuluBlakey1 · 26/05/2024 22:41

And:
Gillian Keegan- disgusting, arrogance
Jeremy Hunt - smug and greedy
Esther McVey - unbearable

LuluBlakey1 · 26/05/2024 22:41

I will take great pleasure in every single Tory lost seat. The more there are, the happier I'll be.

I get the other two but what's Caroline nokes done?

Rees-Mogg for sure. I loathe him more than almost any politician of recent times.
Mordaunt, although I'd love to see her making an utter fool of herself trying to lead the tiny rump of the Tory Party that may be left after the election if some polls are to be believed.
Hunt.

I really came here, though, just to say how hard I find it to connect the Michael Portillo who lost his seat so spectacularly in 1997 with the charming presenter of innumerable travel and train programmes which my husband and I often find ourselves watching these days. Is it feasible that 25 years from now somebody will be saying similar about Gove? Shock

Well a while back I knew someone who went to primary school with him. (actually the same primary school as me but I’m about a decade younger).

And they had nothing going to say about him more than thirty years after that, so I’m not sure the passage of time will be effective.

bombastix · 27/05/2024 00:28

Braverman
Braverman
Badenoch

Fizzadora · 27/05/2024 00:50

FaintlyMacabre · 25/05/2024 12:06

Esther McVey. My MP - the latest in a line of awful Tories in a hopefully previously strong Conservative seat.

Ha ha ha not a chance☺️
It's a long time since the heady days of the man in the white suit confronting the sleazy incumbent on Knutsford Heath.

Weird way to get your kicks.

A thoroughly healthy and cost-effective way to get one’s kicks!

SabrinaThwaite · 27/05/2024 02:51

The electoral calculus website is throwing up predictions that will make a lot of people happy:

Strongly predicted to lose seat:
Rees-Mogg
Mercer
Gullis
Mordaunt
Jenkyns
Cates

High chance of losing seat:
Keegan
McVey
Braverman
Anderson

Possibly could go:
Badenoch
Jenrick

Sadly, Truss and Patel (and Sunak) are in safe seats so they will most likely survive the Tory apocalypse. Hunt should retain his seat too.

Braver man
Rees-Mogg
Jenrick

Same for me. Although I could make a long list.

I fell asleep before Portillo in 97. Dh woke me up to tell me but in the morning I thought I'd dreamt it.

This time I'm staying up

Bululu · 27/05/2024 06:40

What a sad and childish post. You will get the government you deserve.

Piggywaspushed · 27/05/2024 06:41

Yes, you're right : we all deserve better.
