Inspired by another thread, which 3 MPs would you love to see having a Portillo moment ?

Mine are:

Caroline Nokes
Jacob Rees Mogg
Jonathan Gullis

Braver man
Rees-Mogg

I wonder if it will be Angela Rayner - I see that George Galloway already has a candidate in place to challenge her seat;

I doubt it.

ilovesooty · 25/05/2024 18:11

I don't work on Fridays thankfully!

DeadButDelicious · 25/05/2024 18:15

Liz Truss,
Jacob Rees-Mogg,
Priti Patel,
Suella Braverman,
Johnny Mercer.

DeadButDelicious · 25/05/2024 18:17

Oh yeah, I'll add Miriam Cates and Kemi Badenoch to that list as well.

Mogg with survive sadly. In that corner of the world you could stick a blue rosette on a baboon and it would still get elected.

I’m not convinced. His majority is less than the 15k danger mark. It would certainly be a highlight for me.

I knew her years ago. She cared not one jot for politics. I'm convinced she only went into it cos the presenting work dried up and she loves being famous.

I don't think many Tory MPs are conviction politicians, except maybe the genuinely "swivel-eyed loon" contingent. It's just a gravy train for the others.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/05/2024 18:34

Rees-Mogg for sure. I loathe him more than almost any politician of recent times.
Mordaunt, although I'd love to see her making an utter fool of herself trying to lead the tiny rump of the Tory Party that may be left after the election if some polls are to be believed.
Hunt.

I really came here, though, just to say how hard I find it to connect the Michael Portillo who lost his seat so spectacularly in 1997 with the charming presenter of innumerable travel and train programmes which my husband and I often find ourselves watching these days. Is it feasible that 25 years from now somebody will be saying similar about Gove? Shock

Probably. Tory ministers tend to become smarter, better people once they leave Parliament.

I'm looking forward to hearing more from Theresa May in the future.

Mogg,
Braverman
Patel for me, with maybe Gullis as an ‘honourable’ runner up. 😉

I think this is mine too.

Esther McVey. My MP - the latest in a line of awful Tories in a hopefully previously strong Conservative seat.

Sorry hadn't thought of the friend of and apologist for the McCanns. The Minister for Common Sense who condones leaving pre-school children alone, just to go and have a meal.

Michael Portillo to his credit realised why the Tories had lost so badly, indeed was only not shortlisted for Tory leader when IDS was chosen because of the then view amongst Tory MPs about his gay experiences whilst at university.

Cookerhood · 25/05/2024 18:54

Rees Mogg (please!)
Patel
Joy Morrissey

Gonners · 25/05/2024 18:58

@ConfusedKoala13 Can Sunak lose Richmond?

If he does, he'll probably have difficulty not looking delighted. Losing would save him the bother of resigning his seat and finding a candidate for the by-election.

Clavinova · 25/05/2024 19:37

ilovesooty · 25/05/2024 18:09

I doubt it.

It certainly looks like a possibility now that George Galloway has put up a candidate and Reform are struggling to sign up candidates.

2019 results (without Galloway's candidate):

Labour Angela Rayner 18,544
Conservatives 14,281
Brexit Party 3,151
Liberal Democrats 1,395
Green 1,208

Majority 4,263

Reform [faces] a race against time to meet its pledge to stand a full slate of candidates. It needs to select for as many as 160 constituencies before the cut-off point for nominations in 14 days.

I think this is true. He clearly wants out, but is too worried about his reputation to look like a "rat leaving a sinking ship" - he's rich enough for it not to affect him materially, but most ambitious vain types are susceptible to embarrassment. To use a military metaphor, he wants to be honorably discharged rather than look like some ignominious deserter.

He won't be the only one. It really depends how much in the public eye they are, and how much their future career would be helped by choosing the least undignified exit.

Truss
Braverman
Dineage (local reasons)

Ditto Dineage

can I just say every Tory MP - 🍾 at the ready

pointythings · 26/05/2024 21:04

@Clavinova your wishful thinking depends on a swing away from Labour in that seat. That hasn't been the trend. Galloway only got into the seat he did because Labour couldn't field a replacement candidate.

Also it's a London seat - Galloway's candidate is going to be tarred with his master's homophobia and his anti abortion beliefs in a city with a lot of people who have liberal values.

But do keep on dreaming.

pointythings · 26/05/2024 21:06

Oh, and my three are
Jenrick
Cates
McVey

itsgettingweird · 26/05/2024 21:09

Braverman
Braverman

And

Braverman.

She's my MP. She's worse than the media portray her.
