Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

Funny. My parents emigrated in the 1980s, in part because my father hated the Tories with the 🔥 of a thousand suns.

So it probably will happen.

llamadrama16 · 24/05/2024 12:28

No, no one. We know a lot of people who are in the top 1% of earners, a good majority who also hold a second passport, and none of them are saying they will leave.

pikkumyy77 · 24/05/2024 12:28

The original brain drain was academics leaving for Europe and the US. The new people threatening to leave aren’t particularly brains or skills but mid and upper level business people who can easily be replaced by current and rising subordinates. To the extent that people of value (teachers, medical professionals, academics) were having a hard time they were having a hard time because of Toey politics but no one cared to notice.

Maddy70 · 24/05/2024 12:28

Nope. Not a single one

Many left under tbe tories due to brexit. (Including me) Thats why we have such a huge shortage of doctors dentists, teachers ĥealthcare providers etc.

ArmchairPhycologist · 24/05/2024 12:28

Vote would be better being "Yes/No" rather than YANBU/YABU to answer your question imo.

No I don't. Do you believe your brother/bil will actually follow through or is it just hot air?

PonyPatter44 · 24/05/2024 12:29

Lots of people said that in 1997. They didn't go.

neverbeenskiing · 24/05/2024 12:30

No.

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/05/2024 12:30

I doubt it. How many people said they were going to get out of the U.K. any way they could before Brexit prevented them doing so, and yet are still here? When it comes down to it, it’s never actually as green and easy as the idea.

AlpineMuesli · 24/05/2024 12:30

Last two years I think we’ve had about 1.3million new arrivals (net) so no, people leaving is fine. But I don’t know any. It’s a bit of a faff to move internationally, and where would they go?

5128gap · 24/05/2024 12:31

No. But I wouldn't worry too much about it. There's plenty of people with tremendous potential who never get the chance to be in the top positions because of gatekeeping and barriers caused by nepotism, inherited wealth, and all manner of other advantages gained through accidents of birth, without which many would actually be rather mediocre. If all these people emigrate they will create space for other people to rise and shine. So bon voyage and leave the ladder down behind you is what I say!

radiatordrama · 24/05/2024 12:32

Lol. No.

I would consider emigrating if the Tories are reelected and can continue running this country into the ground

innerdesign · 24/05/2024 12:32

We're both HCPs and far more likely to emigrate if the Tories stay in, if that helps

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/05/2024 12:32

No. These pricks never follow through on their threats anyway. Where are they going to go, Dubai? If so they are welcome to it.

Blackcats7 · 24/05/2024 12:32

I certainly know a few tory supporters I wish would emigrate but nobody who plans to go at all.

Teamarugula · 24/05/2024 12:32

Nope, but I do know people who are thinking of emigrating if the tories win again.

Luxell934 · 24/05/2024 12:33

😂

RunningAndSinging · 24/05/2024 12:33

Not as much as when there was a possibility of Jeremy Corbyn.

DressDilemma · 24/05/2024 12:34

We have started thinking about it. Two of our friends have already set things in motion. One is a GP and is moving to Australia and the other one is moving to Canada. It is making us rethink our long term plans in UK. We are already paying 45% tax Applying private school fees VAT and high possibility of further taxation is very disincentivising.

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:34

Well BIL is in a role where many people go and do a stint in the Middle East as the packages available are lucrative. So it’s more a question of that move being hastened.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/05/2024 12:34

Also what exactly is it about the current bin fire that your brother and brother in law think is preferable to paying a little bit more tax on their presumably massive earnings?

CandiedPrincess · 24/05/2024 12:35

Let them go!

Twinstudy · 24/05/2024 12:35

No I don't. Since so many people are banging on about there not being enough room in the country as it is I don't suppose it'll be too much bother if some do though.

sprigatito · 24/05/2024 12:35

I would be very surprised if the collective brainpower of those who want this Tory government to continue amounted to anything approaching a "brain drain".

MissTrip82 · 24/05/2024 12:36

There are always people who say this at every election and they don’t tend to go anywhere.

In any event I’m not sure what you’re describing would constitute a ‘brain drain’………quite the opposite, I imagine.

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 24/05/2024 12:36

radiatordrama · 24/05/2024 12:32

Lol. No.

Same here.

Although quite where we would go since Brexshit closed off so many straightforward escape routes, I don't know...

It's hot air, OP. Have you asked them what their actual plans are?
