Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

I think there's a misreading by some, of exactly how frustrated doctors dentist and tech workers are about the high tax and poor state services. Things make no sense. If Labour want to increase that tax burden then there is no point in working in the UK and relocating has been made easier by g9vernments for anybody with the skills. I mean even Japan has just done this I can't express how big that is Japan has never done that before. Yes I think if labour's position is pro tax people will on this occasion leave. There arecalready Dr and dentist deficits and many cyber roles are not fillable. Some how some government needs to repair the value perception these people have of tax and state benefit. Like most of that class of people Dr's Nurses Dentist Teachers techies this are the grafting middle no long history of family wealth. Its so strange to hear people completely reject the reality of what is happening. If you looked at the numbers of graduating Dr's planning on leaving for BETTER prospects I think some people on here would be shocked. Its just not fair and feels hopeless.

The Sun will probably run headlines like “Will the last person to leave Britain please turn out the light?” But I don’t think that will work this time.

Nothing like waiting to see what actually happens….

They are rich people and were looking to buy somewhere overseas but decided to hurry up that process. They will keep a house in the UK too.

spriots · 24/05/2024 13:04

I'm not joking when I say no but I do know people who are seriously considering leaving if the Tories won again.

Myself included actually.

CheerfulBunny · 24/05/2024 13:04

It's usually the Jim Davidson types who threaten to leave so no great loss. My MIL is crapping it in case she has to pay an extra 10p tax towards the NHS she banged pans for on her doorstep 🙄

InterIgnis · 24/05/2024 13:04

Well the UK already had the third highest level of wealth flight in the world, and whether that increases or not remains to be seen. It isn’t an empty threat, given that it is happening:

I know people who have left and are in the process of leaving, yes. My own parents have done, as have I.

God some people on this site are nuts.

If you'd prefer to live in a glorified shopping mall of a country where the sports facilities are built by slaves and women are being tortured in prison for wanting to drive, just so you can hold on to slightly more of your massively salary, go for it.

I'm personally looking forward to the slight glimmer of a possibility that my infant son might now grow up in a Britain where, if you ring for an ambulance, one might actually turn up.

It's Friday, have a glass of wine and chill out.

My friend and her husband bought a house in Spain last year as they don't want to live in the UK if Labour get in. Top 1% earner.

What is it that they think they will benefit from in Spain compared to the UK with a Labour govt?

VAT on public uni fees is really not on the table! Almost all UK universities are public

So naive ..

Billyandharry · 24/05/2024 13:05

If people leave because Labour get in it's hardly brain ' drain' is it?? More brainless drain?
Many of them realise they can't go and live in Europe because they voted for Brexit too.

keffie12 · 24/05/2024 13:06

@groyard 🤣🤣🤣 The state this country is in after 14 years of Tory rule, and they want to immigrate.

If they are not having a laugh, let them get on with it. It's an utterly pathetic dramatic display.

Emigrating isn't that easy, either. They can't even pop across the water now cos of Brexsh*t

They are probably better off than you think because no one with any sanity wants another 5 years of this.

I know of many lifelong Tories voters going to Labour. When you have people like Chris Patten (last governor of Hong Kong) under Maggie saying, "when three was a Tory party. Ken Clarke, Michael Hestleline, Rory Stewart, and so on refusing to vote Tory who were lifelong Tories people, then that tells you a lot.

This is the most corrupt government in history

Trisolaris · 24/05/2024 13:07

I know a lot of people who are thinking of leaving as they feel the environment in the UK is not business friendly but they tend to be generally disillusioned rather than anti any particular party.

KreedKafer · 24/05/2024 13:08

Literally nobody.

People who say they will emigrate if Labour get in (or indeed if the Tories get in) almost never do, anyway. It's all bluster.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/05/2024 13:09

People always say this when there's a 'danger' of Labour getting in.

The Scum newspaper claimed to have won the election for the tories in 1992 with just such a headline ("Last person out turn the lights out"). Didn't Cliff Richard or Rod Stewart or someone equally irrelevant and ridiculous threaten to leave in the 90s if Labour won?

It's utterly ludicrous.

In fact, my contempt for this kind of hyperbolic aresholery is such that I will happily go and wave them off if Labour wins.

heretodestroyyou · 24/05/2024 13:09

Most of the people I know are public sector, NHS workers or work in charities. I think they're more worried about better public services and a living wage than VAT on fee paying schools and having to pay tax fairly.

Fuck the higher rate taxpayers having a whinge.

pizzaHeart · 24/05/2024 13:09

RunningAndSinging · 24/05/2024 12:33

Not as much as when there was a possibility of Jeremy Corbyn.

No and to be honest neither DH nor I don’t remember anyone mentioning emigration because of Jeremy Corbyn but I do accept that some Jewish people felt really uncomfortable and seriously considered this.

DownWithThisKindOfThing · 24/05/2024 13:10

Hope they don’t let the door bang them on the arse on the way out.

poetryandwine · 24/05/2024 13:10

Hardly

Literally a number of families, well paid skilled workers. Happy to go (or have already gone) somewhere they can enjoy and are appreciated, rather than milked dry to hold up a failing welfare state.

wutheringkites · 24/05/2024 13:13

@Itwasabrightcoldayinapril

So the people you know have left because of the Tories?

YellowHairband · 24/05/2024 13:13

If my parents had made me move to the ME as a teenager just so they could pay less tax I'd have been furious.

frankentall · 24/05/2024 13:14

VerlynWebbe · 24/05/2024 12:38

I know several people I wish would emigrate.

I came on to say this. Can we start a list?

Itwasabrightcoldayinapril · 24/05/2024 13:14

poetryandwine · 24/05/2024 13:10

Hardly

You really think that with

  1. the (gleeful) acceptance of the introduction of VAT on one form of education;

and

  1. the dire state of university bank balances,

Labour won’t increase university fees?

Ok.

we had this before with "emigrating if tories get in" and "emigrating if we brexit" and so on.

How easy is it to emigrate? and tbh when people say that to me the only correct answer is "I'll help you pack"

Itwasabrightcoldayinapril · 24/05/2024 13:15

You’d be surprised. They have a whale of a time.
