Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

No. I’d like to emigrate if the UK gets worse, but I’m open to Labour not being a car crash. Won’t count on it though.

unfortunately my and DHs jobs are pretty locked in to England, so I’m not going anywhere. I’m encouraging the kids to purpose mobile careers though. But that’s not linked to a political party but to the general state of the UK overall.

ASighMadeOfStone · 24/05/2024 12:37

Nope.
I know a few who would consider returning though.

sprigatito · 24/05/2024 12:35

I would be very surprised if the collective brainpower of those who want this Tory government to continue amounted to anything approaching a "brain drain".

100%, absolutely this.

Less Tories in the country is fine by me.

VerlynWebbe · 24/05/2024 12:38

I know several people I wish would emigrate.

sprigatito · 24/05/2024 12:38

Flight of capital is more likely than brain drain (because it's greed that motivates high earners to vote Tory, not intelligence) but even that isn't going to be as big a problem this time around. This Labour Party isn't socialist enough to scare many people away and anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows that the Tories have to go.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/05/2024 12:39

Can you imagine being that much of a whiny, money obsessed bitch that you would uproot your entire life at the prospect of paying a bit more tax?

If I have to pay VAT on replacing my bathroom, you can sure as hell pay it on private education.

dameofdilemma · 24/05/2024 12:39

No but I’m hoping the voter being interviewed on Channel 4 news who was banging on about migrants ruining the country emigrates.

Preferably somewhere he’s resented for being a migrant. For added irony.

Penguinmouse · 24/05/2024 12:40

Where are people going to emigrate to? Brexit has taken freedom of movement for normal people.

Beryls · 24/05/2024 12:41

Nah, just like all those people who said they'd leave when the tories got in..and then didn't. People are so dramatic when it comes to politics. In a few years no doubt it'll be the other way round again.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 24/05/2024 12:41

Nope - tbf labour coming in won't impact us that much, i dont personally support them though.

Well quite. And to a country with an appalling human rights record too by the sounds of it. Honestly, I don't think we'll miss their brains too much.

Teamarugula · 24/05/2024 12:32

Nope, but I do know people who are thinking of emigrating if the tories win again.

This!

YellowHairband · 24/05/2024 12:43

I know people who have left because of brexit, and HCPs who have left over of pay. That worries me far more.

What Labour policies are they leaving over?

DPotter · 24/05/2024 12:43

I know 6 couples over the years who have 'emigrated' - none of them directly because of the colour of the government in power, although they all moved for job opportunities.

And 5 came back within 3 years.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/05/2024 12:44

These are the kind of dickheads, who in normal life, put a line on their milk in the shared fridge and never get their round in.

They will always be unhappy.

FallingBackIntoTheHedgeMaze · 24/05/2024 12:44

Luckily I don't know anyone selfish and greedy enough to prefer the Tories to keep destroying the economy, decimating what's left of our fragile public services after fourteen years of this corrupt and incompetent government and increasing child poverty than vote in a party who will actually try to do something about it.

swimsong · 24/05/2024 12:44

You have to very naive to think Starmer's Labour is going to raise taxes. Maybe naive enough to be crap at whatever job they are doing, so bye then. Ideological austerity politics in the last 14 years has lowered the quality-of-life for everyone, the rich included, albeit less so. At least in principle Labour is still about quality-of-life for everyone and not just Tory friends and family.

MavisPennies · 24/05/2024 12:45

Nope
I know a few teachers & nurses who might be persuaded to stay though.

Most of the people who threatened to emigrate in 97 didn't. It's such a childish threat - "if everyone doesn't vote the way I want them to, I'm taking my ball home". The only reasonable response to such a threat is an offer to help them pack.

villainandvixen · 24/05/2024 12:48

We emigrated in part due to brexit. We never announced it was due to this or threatened to leave if people voted to leave the EU.
it wasn’t the only factor, but certainly helped our decision.

i think less people will leave because of a change in government because it’s something that may change at the next general election. The people that leave will be the ones that were leaving anyways.

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 24/05/2024 12:48

@groyard because they love living in this country under this fucking terrible government? How do they think it could get worse? 🙄

Ironically, I have recently been offered a relocation package to the ME. In the unlikely event we wake up to another Tory 'government' on 5th July, I might reconsider my initial rejection!

But in all honesty I'd rather stay here and work to make things better in my corner of the UK, even if I do end up paying a few quid more in tax. I love this country, and therefore I want to stay to see it recover and thrive, not fuck off to the ME to count my tax-free dosh.

Penguinmouse · 24/05/2024 12:40

People emigrated before Brexit. Most people don't immigrate to Europe, Australia, USA and Canada are the top countries. I imagine if they wanted to move to Europe they would so so in the same manner as they would outside of Europe. 508,000 people emigrated last year - doesn't really show a reduction in the freedoms of movement does it.

Einwegflasche · 24/05/2024 12:49

Nope.
