Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

There has already been a brain drain in a relative's industry due to Brexit. Apart from that a friend and his DH moved abroad due to Conservative policies and they are watching and waiting for the election result.
So we may find a return rather than an exit.

CheshireCat1 · 24/05/2024 13:16

Everyone that I know is hoping and praying that Labour win because they love our country and want it to do well and not be a laughing stock.

InterIgnis · 24/05/2024 13:16

If you have skills that are in demand, and wealth, emigrating isn’t difficult tbh. There are many countries actively trying to attract capital.

skippy67 · 24/05/2024 13:16

No.

Cattery · 24/05/2024 13:18

Bye then 👋 I don’t understand how people could see it as preferable to have lying, cheating, money grabbing cunts “in charge” 🤷‍♀️

So the people you know have left because of the Tories?

The ones who have already left, left because this country doesn’t reward achievement. Whether it’s the tories or Labour.

Ones who are sorting out leaving now, it’s the last straw with labours increase in taxes.

Wealthy skilled people, find moving countries quite straightforward. Schools are the main issue - but most places have British schools now. In fact they use ‘British’ as a stamp of honour. Not sure how long that will last.

I suspect it's the lying, cheating, money grabbing cunts who want that kind of government.

FluentRubyDog · 24/05/2024 13:20

No, but I get a distinct feeling that those who do will be excellent examples of "good riddance" category.

groyard · 24/05/2024 13:20

They are hardly uber elites. BIL’s parents were immigrant shopkeepers.

What increase in taxes?

countrygirl99 · 24/05/2024 13:21

My son and his wife emigrated because of Brexit as did a few other people we know. All were in relationships with someone from another EU country.
I also know a few doctors and nurses who have emigrated in the last 3 years. One GP friend said they'd only consider coming back if the Tories lost the next election.
I don't know anyone who is talking about emigrating if Labour get elected.

sexnotgenders · 24/05/2024 13:21

Good riddance

wutheringkites · 24/05/2024 13:21

The lack of critical thinking involved in most of the examples given here suggests to me that this is not a brain drain.

Itwasabrightcoldayinapril · 24/05/2024 13:22

frankentall · 24/05/2024 13:20

What increase in taxes?

The initial increase is VAT on education. Which no other country in Europe has.
More will come.it always does.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 24/05/2024 13:22

To be honest, I'm.already advising my children to leave. If Labour win, then there is a chance that the country may be better for young people if they stay, but if the Tories win, then I'll tell them to go, not look back and I'll join them when I retire.

sussexman · 24/05/2024 13:22

This is often stated but rarely acted upon unless a plan already exists to migrate. Ironically often it is said by those most opposed to economic migrants...

God some people on this site are nuts.

If you'd prefer to live in a glorified shopping mall of a country where the sports facilities are built by slaves and women are being tortured in prison for wanting to drive, just so you can hold on to slightly more of your massively salary, go for it.

I'm personally looking forward to the slight glimmer of a possibility that my infant son might now grow up in a Britain where, if you ring for an ambulance, one might actually turn up.

It's Friday, have a glass of wine and chill out.

Couldn’t put it any better!

wutheringkites · 24/05/2024 13:23

@Itwasabrightcoldayinapril

Where are they all moving to?

Are you planning to emigrate as well?

frankentall · 24/05/2024 13:24

Apparently Katie Hopkins threatened to fuck off if we elected a Labour Government once - so it's not all bad news.

Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 13:24

The people I know who have left did it because of wage stagnation & house prices.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 24/05/2024 13:24

No one seems to care about the doctors, nurses and teachers who have left in their droves in the last 10 years. We actually need these people.

Headingtowardsdivorce · 24/05/2024 13:25

God, I cannot bear people who think that hanging on to their considerable amounts of money is more important than looking out for others. I wish they'd all bloody emigrate, leaving room for decent people to move here.

It won’t be better for young women if Labour win.

Labour don’t actually recognise that women exist. Well they do if by the definition of woman you include women with penises.

This means that no safe spaces for girls and women will exist exclusively for women. None.

Labour say spaces are safe for women, with them. But as their definition of women includes men with dicks, Labour is lying.

Itsnamechange · 24/05/2024 13:25

You really know where someone’s moral compass sits when they’d rather the rest of the country continue with a political party that’s crushed ordinary people under the weight of increasing cost of living, skyrocketing mortgages, crippled public services and constant sleaze and corruption, than pay a penny more tax.

Id rather that type of person leave and not come back frankly
