General election 2024

If Labour get in, will they reverse Brexit?

I have no idea, so is it possible/likely?

I'm specifically thinking about free movement within Europe. At the moment its very hard to get a visa to move, permanently move, anywhere in the EU.

Thats not what I want to do.

I want to move, with proper residency, to another EU country and pay my taxes and NI in my country of residence.

But now, since Brexit, its near impossible to do.

@VeryGoodVeryNiceChickenNugget

why do you want to move?

you don't seem to care about where you go?

do you really think 'anywhere' other than here would be better??

that seems ill though out.

Startingagainandagain · 25/05/2024 08:24

There was a referendum and unfortunately Labour can't just overturn the decision...

Plus the EU might not be so willing to take us back and there is a process to follow to reapply for membership.

At least Starmer won't act like an arrogant, petulant child when dealing with other countries, so I hope he will be able to negotiate better trading terms and maybe something in term of limited freedom of movement.

In fairness to @VeryGoodVeryNiceChickenNugget , there is little appeal to remaining in the UK these days, for me anyway. I never thought I'd ever say that, but since Brexshit, the economy is in tatters (not helped by covid, but the government's own stats think that the impact of Brexshit is far higher than that of covid), all the work in my field has gone from London, taxation is nearly the highest level it has ever been and yet public services are on their knees. Disquiet of the population is huge, a great many people want to take out and not put anything in (you only have to read a good many threads on here to see that), etc.

And to top it all now, the choice between Labour and Conservative is a bit like choosing between syphilis or gonorrhoea.

LlynTegid · 25/05/2024 08:31

Sadly there won't be the opportunity to reverse the great mistake. Which should be by a referendum.

Starker probably won't but Lammy possibly will. God help us if that's the best we can come up with as Foreign Secretary. It's actually very concerning.

I loathe David Cameron but I feel safer with him as Foreign Secretary than I will with David Lammy.

ExasperatedManager · 25/05/2024 09:19

Unfortunately, the twats who voted for Brexit chose to vote to get rid of our rights to live and work in the EU. That's democracy.

Sadly, Labour won't reverse this any time soon.

David Lammy, as in Tottenham David Lammy?

Jesus Christ.

Is Diane Abbott gonna be in there too?

We should be able to claim asylum elsewhere if this is the case.

We should be able to claim asylum elsewhere if this is the case. - I know this is a joke but, I've sometimes wondered if someone was for example, street homeless and the council couldn't help them, or sick and couldn't get timely help on the NHS, or some other issue... could they claim asylum in another EU country?

NamechangeForthisquestion1 · 25/05/2024 11:10

@VeryGoodVeryNiceChickenNugget love the username by the way, got the song in my head now 😂 I think most people are doing the move to NI for 5 years thing.. the only issue is their housing crisis is way worse than ours.

No, of course not. Brexit wasn't party political. Neither Tory nor Labour actually wanted it, but it had to be done because it was the "will of the people" after the referendum. Both Labour and Tories were split on the issue. Only the Libdems wanted to stay in or go back in, and they did very poorly on that platform in the last general election!

Absolutely rejoin.
Our Lithuanian gardener used to work for peanuts and now this new chappy wants double money which we've been forced to shell out.

I don't think the EU would want us back!

That says more about you than it does about him.

I’d assumed it was a joke/sarcasm as surely no one would sincerely post this.

No because a democratic vote can't be overturned . What we need now, as promised, is to get out of the ECHR, and make our own bill of rights

Sorry to disappoint you but that would be a breach of international law and the Good Friday agreement.

parkrun500club · 27/05/2024 20:54

Jessie21 · 24/05/2024 09:34

I hope so.

Brexit is the biggest mistake this country has made. I'd take having the euro if it meant we got the benefits back.

Me too.

HRTQueen · 27/05/2024 23:40

I don’t think the EU is hardly going to factor in this election at all about from a little of we shall continue with what was started from the Conservatives and Labour we shall build better ties

SilkFloss · 28/05/2024 00:43

But Brexit wasn't a Tory/Labour thing. The debate was cross-party. There were many Tories who were Remainers and many Labour guys who were Vote Leave.

That’s hardly the point. It was the Tory government, led by David Cameron who allowed this ill advised referendum with most people not understanding the consequences of what they were voting for.

Really?

The same David Cameron who bombed Libya back to the stone age, with no plan to rebuild the country, so its now a failed state and a gateway for millions of migrants pouring into Europe and the 10s of '000s who have died trying to come to Europe.

No thankyou.

People seem to be forgetting that the referendum was a 2015 general election Conservative manifesto pledge. The electorate voted in the Conservatives on the promise of a referendum being held. That referendum was held and it was electorate who voted for Brexit. Whatever the rights and wrongs of Brexit, the fact remains that it was the voting public who voted for it.
