How confident do you feel that the Tories will lose?

1000 replies

pinklite · 23/05/2024 23:04

Do you feel confident? Going off what I see on social media, there is no way that they don't lose by a massive majority.

However I worry that this is just a small snapshot of the public and is not an accurate representation.

It really wouldn't surprise me if we don't have a Labour majority.

What does everybody else think the result will be?

It is understood that HMRC also looked into the issue at the request of Rayner, and have confirmed there is no capital gains tax liability, meaning no action will be taken

When did she contact HMRC? She said she had sought independent tax advice - not that she had spoken to HMRC. Fine if she confirms that herself in an interview.

blue345 · 28/05/2024 18:02

I honestly think they're all guilty of do as I say, not as I do.

Boris et al have to take the lion's share of the blame as they set the lockdown rules but didn't feel they needed to comply with them (when I think of people dying in hospitals without their family, it makes me incandescently furious). I think Keir broke lockdown rules at the Radisson and was lucky to get away with it.

It doesn't bother me whether Mrs Sunak pays tax as a non-dom as those are the rules. If you don't like it, lobby to change the rules. I also suspect Angela Rayner broke the rules on her second home. She may have escaped further police investigation but I don't think she complied with HMRC rules.

She's obsfucated for months about where she was living, I'd have respected her more for admitting she f*ed up, she should have declared she wasn't living there and taking it on the chin rather than the opaque wording she and Starmer have been parroting ad nauseam.

I'm not a Labour voter but I quite like Starmer and I don't mind Sunak. Boris was entertaining but a lazy, unmitigated disaster as PM. I agree with PPs that May was uninspiring but walked the walk and respect to her for bother to serve on the back benches after being ousted,.

Labour are not going to wait 2 years! FFS this is just pure speculation! Starmer has said it’s the first thing he will do in office. I fully expect nurseries and universities will come next. Closing small village schools and anything connected to a church, especially if it’s white and Christian. He will be taxing us to the moon and back whilst he sits in interviews telling us women have penises, and doing sod all to improve our actual lives.

If they don't introduce this within the first year, then it won't happen until April 2026 or the following September 2026.

As Reeves has said there won't be an initial budget, we are looking at this Autumn, no one will be geared up for it, schools, hmrc etc.

You are just another reactionary scaremonger.

Pure speculation? well, you are the expert on that!!!! Nurseries and Church Schools, you re bonkers.

Labour are allergic to success and ambition. It’s not difficult to see their sneering woke agenda on here, the be kind brigade that are anything but.

Edited

I've seen no sneering, just people explaining why removing charity status to raise around £1.7 billion which can be spent on improving state schools is not the vote loser you think it is. The good of the majority of children should be reason to go ahead with the plan. Many parents will pay the increase. Some schools will suck up the difference in a variety of ways.

No need to be rude or insult people who feel this removal of charity status isn't the be all and end all. Your name calling just reflects poorly on you and won't make people suddenly vote Tory.

First GMP investigation = no inquiry needed, Second but full investigation, lasting many weeks = no laws broken.

Twice looked at by HMRC - 15 years ago and more recently = No Tax liability.

Why do you still think she is "guilty" based on what?

To me, this is a nasty sneering campaign by certain Tories to trash someone's reputation, the original claim was made by a leading tory supporter.....

Despite not being a Tory voter, i still think most MPs are decent people, driven by an aim to improve most people's lives, there are plenty in both parties who have done good for vulnerable people and causes.

They aren't all like Sunak, Boris or Clegg.

herecomesthesun24 · 28/05/2024 18:57

I will miss some of the female MPs when they go, Harriet Harman and Theresa May were always worth listening to. As for most of the male former cabinet members, good riddance!

@Clavinova you are a constant in the world & mumsnet can count on you to be a cheerleader for Johnson even given all the evidence of his dishonesty & incompetence.

Let’s see how that national service policy announcement went down.

A PM who openly lied in parliament!

So they claim - like Tony Blair and his weapons of mass destruction!

He also prorogued Parliament.

Like John Mayor.
I'm more concerned about politicians who tried to block Brexit after a democratic vote.

Who was fined for his behaviour by police while serving as PM.

I'm not bothered about the brief birthday cake gathering to be honest. Johnson wasn't present for the gatherings I am bothered about - he was at Chequers the evening before Prince Philip's funeral for example.

Theres that Lie, Deny, Minimise and Deflect thing about Partygate reminding us that Tories lack empathy and don't give a shit about those who suffered and died alone while that bunch of cunts partied.Angry

Labour are only claiming they will invest 'nearly £1bn' (per year) in their education policy paper. Currently state schools have a £2 billion per year temporary uplift - afforded by reducing the overseas aid budget (according to the IFS). Are Labour going to increase the overseas aid budget by taking funding from schools - either state or private?

herecomesthesun24 · 28/05/2024 19:44

Spending it on state education, healthcare or to help people desperately in need of overseas aid seems reasonable to me. All preferable to throwing it into the financial black hole of HS2.

What did happen to the Brexit bus claim of all that money that was going to go into the NHS? We were to be captains of our own destiny and the country was going to thrive?

Well Starm was out having a knees up beer and curry, but was suspiciously let off with a fine and a slapped wrist, double bloody standards!

You don't like lawbreakers but Harriet Harman has a string of driving convictions including a ban for driving at 99mph, reversing into a parked car using her mobile phone ...

Not true, he was not fined because he was found to not have contravened lockdown rules. Because they were different to the rules in force at the time that the PM was having his festivities in Downing Street.

Lying isn't a good look.

Because they were different to the rules in force at the time that the PM was having his festivities in Downing Street.

Actually, the rules were quite similar at the time - Starmer's curry was less than two weeks after Prince Philip's funeral - when the Queen was photographed sitting alone.

Lying isn't a good look.

Police handed doc's to HMRC, HMRC have said there is no tax liability, as have the local council.

As HMRC said 9 years ago....

These smears are what tarnishes our politics... & bring about cynicism, same as your dig at Starmer earlier over his age & him being cleared by the Police over LD rule breaches.

Is this all you Tories have got? personal attacks?

The point is, as you well know, that Starmer was investigated twice and he was NOT given a fixed penalty notice. Which means that @Polishedshoesalways was being - shall we say - economical with the truth?

Your whataboutery is exhausting. Your loyalty to the Tory cause though, however misguided, is commendable.

No one has claimed Angela Rayner contacted HMRC 9 years ago either - she claimed ignorance of all tax matters.

Police handed doc's to HMRC

When?

HMRC have said there is no tax liability

An HMRC spokesman said: 'We cannot comment on individuals due to taxpayer confidentiality law.'

I am 90% confident but there are some very odd people in the UK (who would still vote Tory no matter what) so can't be sure - also our voting system is a total disgrace, so there's that.

Only ever 90% Confident because as you say some people just won't change their vote no matter what. It is obvious the tories do not think they will win as they are all using the "I am not standing in the election to spend more time with the family" line.

Keir Starmer was being economical with the truth whether he broke the law or not. He's been exposed again today - lying about Diane Abbott.

Lottelenya · 28/05/2024 20:28

I think the repeated lying on the part of some posters isn’t doing the tories any favours tbh. None of us will change our vote because of anything @Clavinova says.
