How confident do you feel that the Tories will lose?

1000 replies

pinklite · 23/05/2024 23:04

Do you feel confident? Going off what I see on social media, there is no way that they don't lose by a massive majority.

However I worry that this is just a small snapshot of the public and is not an accurate representation.

It really wouldn't surprise me if we don't have a Labour majority.

What does everybody else think the result will be?

Yep it really warms people to man of the people Mr Sunak. He and his family know exactly how it feels to be going through a cost of living crisis.

Starmer has taken more freebies than all Labour leaders since 1997 combined

herecomesthesun24 · 28/05/2024 17:09

Starmer didn’t get fined for breaking the lockdown rules did he but Johnson and Sunak both did. It feels like the Tory leadership has been completely morally bankrupt since May.

Bululu · 28/05/2024 17:10

Really I thought KS was down to earth and would take the bus. Man of the people. Shell shock 😳 🤣🤣🤣

Expect them to get a free pass for every single thing.

Polishedshoesalways · 28/05/2024 15:43

And you are completely ignoring the impact on state schools of thousands - hundreds of thousands of unfunded pupils.

Edited

It's not going to be hundreds of thousands, is it? It will be a few thousand at most. Why would they be unfunded?

herecomesthesun24 · 28/05/2024 17:19

A free pass from whom @Bululu the general electorate?

Ultimately, the public will decide who they want to run the country for the next few years and it tends to be cyclical. We know that whoever the popular press backs will do well as they reflect, but also shape, public opinion. We know from Brexit that savvy campaigns, slogans and appealing to disenfranchised voters helps.

A few people going back & forth on mumsnet doesn’t make a jot of difference.

Only since May? I'd say they've been completely morally bankrupt at least since Johnson became PM.

Notonthestairs · 28/05/2024 17:20

I'd assume Theresa May rather than the month.

herecomesthesun24 · 28/05/2024 17:24

Correct @Notonthestairs I was referring to Theresa May a politician whose politics I didn’t agree with but who I believe acted with political integrity and who wanted to serve the country as opposed to the subsequent self-serving PMs.

Scruffily · 28/05/2024 17:25

Do you have any views about Sunak's extensive use of planes, @Clavinova?

Starmer still tried to cover up how many people he was with - you can't trust anything he says. He said his hotel wasn't serving food that evening as well - it was.

Sunak can use as many planes as he likes as far as I'm concerned (he's the PM)- but Starmer is a hypocrite.

frankentall · 28/05/2024 17:30

It's desperate stuff, mostly extensively recycled.

herecomesthesun24 · 28/05/2024 17:30

Talkjng about not trusting what people say, what about Johnson? A PM who openly lied in parliament! He also prorogued Parliament. Who was fined for his behaviour by police while serving as PM. An absolute disgrace of a politician.

Mairzydotes · 28/05/2024 17:31

I'm not confident they will lose, I wouldn't be surprised if they were in power after the election. Labour also seem to be disliked , and there isn't really anyone else.

Fron what I've read , people dislike the main members of the tory party in Westminster, but a lot of people like their local candidates.

Ah, sorry. Basically we agree then, as I dated the rise of moral bankruptcy as starting with Johnson's election precisely because I thought you couldn't really accuse Theresa May of being corrupt.

frankentall · 28/05/2024 17:36

Clavinova · 28/05/2024 16:14

I don't think the media are going to drop this without further clarification.

No, the Tory press will do their best to discredit her even if they have zero evidence because she frightens the Tories.

So being the PM means you can put two fingers up to the environment and the public purse? Glad to have the Tory view confirmed so starkly.

herecomesthesun24 · 28/05/2024 17:38

One of the main reasons Labour will gain seats is because the SNP have fallen from grace. So not necessarily a vote of confidence in Labour but people have had enough of the SNP as in England the by-election results indicate people have had enough of the Tories.

WhereYouLeftIt · 28/05/2024 17:42

You can never be sure of anything in politics. I think this General Election will hang on things neither the Conservatives nor the Labour Party have the slightest control over.

Traditionally, Scotland produced about 50 seats for Labour, and the rise of the SNP meant their chances of getting an overall majority from England/Wales/NI alone were much reduced. I expect(!) the SNP vote to collapse and those votes to go mainly to Labour, which gives them a big leg-up and to have less work to do in the rest of the UK to get a majority. However I could be wrong and SNP voters so tribal that they will stick with them regardless, and this will make a decent majority all the harder to get for Labour.

Labour has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory before, under Corbyn. I don't think Starmer produces the same response, but anything is possible. Conservative votes could be syphoned off by Reform, but Labour voters could be put off by whatever their local candidate says about Palastine. Rayner could get gobby. Tories could have a Night of the Long Knives. Candidates of whatever party could be outed as frauds / rapists / thieves / completely fuckwitted.

It's a shitshow and completely unpredictable.

(Although I do predict the LibDems will get nowhere.)

ScottishScouser · 24/05/2024 11:38

I'm a Tory. Will I admit it in real life? Nope.

When I do I get called evil, scum, selfish (thats one of the better ones) and physically threatened on occasion.

My family are independence supporting Scots - so we don't discuss it.

My issue is my DH who being Scottish and lifelong union member is genetically predisposed to vote labour except when I point out to him there is not a single policy they have that benefits us - he shuts up. That was certainly the case at the last election.

When the manifestos come out, I will read both as I always do. I will buy a hat and eat it if the labour one has anything in it that mean he and I are better off under about.

Household income £120K
DH retired
I work
No kids
Mortgage free
Private health

Also a Scot, though living in the south of England.
Labour doesn't have policies that'll make me better off either, but then it was the bastard Tory party that has put up taxes to a 70year high. So, 🤷‍♀️

Us...
Household income £250K
Both work for NHS
No mortgage
No kids
Could use private healthcare if needed but as I'm a doctor in the NHS....

Would rather gouge our eyes out than vote Tory.
So guess we cancel you out 😁🤣

You really need to get over this. It was all investigated extensively by the police at the time, and they decided Starmer hadn't broken the law. Why not accept that the people who actually did the investigation know what they are doing?

Do you spend this much time complaining about the extensive lies Johnson, Sunak and their supporters have been caught out in over the last few years?

pointythings · 28/05/2024 17:51

Do you spend this much time complaining about the extensive lies Johnson, Sunak and their supporters have been caught out in over the last few years?

No, because they're Tories and whatever they do is fiiiiiine.

Meanwhile on Angela Rayner from the Guardian just now:

It is understood that HMRC also looked into the issue at the request of Rayner, and have confirmed there is no capital gains tax liability, meaning no action will be taken.
A spokesperson for Stockport council said it had “reviewed and responded to all correspondence relating to this matter”, including from police, adding: “We have also concluded that no further action will be taken on behalf of the council.”

So that's it done. Anything the right wing media have to say now will be the usual hypocritical petty spite.

Clavinova · 28/05/2024 17:53

A PM who openly lied in parliament!

So they claim - like Tony Blair and his weapons of mass destruction!

He also prorogued Parliament.

Like John Mayor.
I'm more concerned about politicians who tried to block Brexit after a democratic vote.

Who was fined for his behaviour by police while serving as PM.

I'm not bothered about the brief birthday cake gathering to be honest. Johnson wasn't present for the gatherings I am bothered about - he was at Chequers the evening before Prince Philip's funeral for example.
