Sorry if it’s a daft question but why exactly has he called a general election for July? I assumed the tories would drag it out as long as possible eg end of 2024 beginning of 2025.

Fancies America for the school holidays?

Lots of speculation on LBC and the consensus is no one understands. The only thing is the inflation figures today, but they've now been overshadowed by this announcement anyway. Not even sure the Tories have candidates in every seat.

Me too. The idea of people like Lammy and Rayner in government posts is terrifying. We have a very difficult journey ahead and anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded.

Whats wrong with them?

sp1ders · 22/05/2024 17:37

MagnetCarHair · 22/05/2024 17:31

I'd have some confidence that things could potentially get a little better if we had a circa 1997 New Labour government on the table, unfortunately what we have is a piss-poor knock-off Aldi version. The cornottos are on me.

The whole country's a piss poor Aldi version thanks to 14 years of Tories so I don't think Starmer will be anything unusual.

A lot of posters need to be careful what they wish for!

I assume it's only the very young hoping for a Labour win?

I'm very old. I hope Labour win.

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 22/05/2024 17:38

@Janjk because this last 14 years has been such a delight 🙄. FFS.

CheshireCat1 · 22/05/2024 17:38

He gone before he gets pushed with the no confidence letters.

Toomanydeer · 22/05/2024 17:38

Scottish Schools break up end June and the holiday exodus will be in full flow up here....

Janjk · 22/05/2024 17:39

No it hasn't. It's been a shitshow. It'll be a shitshow with different faces from 5th July.

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 22/05/2024 17:39

@4thJuly2024 Im in my 50s I’m absolutely praying for a Labour government - teaching in the Blair years was a delight!

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 22/05/2024 17:39

Janjk · 22/05/2024 17:39

No it hasn't. It's been a shitshow. It'll be a shitshow with different faces from 5th July.

So what’s your solution then?

Spottedshell · 22/05/2024 17:39

I've read that he was going to wear one of these, but decided against it at the last minute, in case he looked a bit silly.

Phew! Close call

Then maybe research it and look into how to make a postal vote?

I have researched it and therein lies the problem

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 22/05/2024 17:40

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 22/05/2024 17:08

Is that what happened? Or did someone just post a thought on what the state of women's rights might be under a Labour government? 🙄

That also doesn't mean anyone thinks the Tories are good for women when thinking they'd be equally shite under Labour. People cannot think critically on this board at all. Or care about more than one issue at the same time it seems.

Are you new here or something? Literally every politically themed thread descends into an arguement about this sooner or later.

I agree there's a select few posters who don't (or can't) focus on anything else. It doesn't matter if you're trying to discuss school fees, water quality, the post office scandal, brexit, farming, education or health the same few posters crop up and try to derail the thread time and time again.

I'm just surprised it only took 10 posts today, usually it's a few pages in before one of them is alerted.

CheshireCat1 · 22/05/2024 17:40

I’ve lived through, Labour, Conservative and Coalition governments and I’m voting Labour.

Compared to a 100yr old I'm young but in the normal range, no, I'm not young.
I just simply can't get behind the Conservatives that seem to have very little understanding of how 'normal' people live whilst they stockpile their millions and make a mockery of setting rules/guidelines during a pandemic that they flouted and have destroyed funding for education and the NHS.
Who knows if Labour will be any better but jeez, let's have some change

Me too.

And yes to teaching under Blair being a delight. Equipment that functioned, small classes, loads of support staff.

the80sweregreat · 22/05/2024 17:18

The police should turn that music down
It's disrespectful :(
What a farce

Why should they turn it down? People are allowed to protest.

I thought the whole thing was utterly hilarious. Rishi getting totally drenched and his speech in danger of being drowned out by "Things Can Only Get Better" being played at huge volume.🤣🤣🤣🤣

It might feature in years to come on one of those "When TV Goes Horribly Wrong" programs. Very apt. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Janjk · 22/05/2024 17:41

@RemarkablyBrightCreature I don't have one. But I don't think a Labour government is going to be the golden era people seem to think.

Time to bring forward my retirement plans.

My family's ages range between 18 and 68 and we are all Labour. It's not the ideal Labour Government we wold want, and I'm sure lot of people feel the same, but, seriously, how ,much longer can we go on like this?
I work in the NHS - with very vulnerable people and my days are just trying to reassure that they wont be killed off slowly by people who have no care for them whatsoever. At least Labour may give them a chance

ginasevern · 22/05/2024 17:41

HoneyButterPopcorn · 22/05/2024 16:37

Looks like Labour will be in. I’m dreading what they will do for women’s rights.

Ah yes, because the Tories have been absolutely fucking brilliant for women's rights haven't they. More children and women in poverty than you shake a stick at and all the trans issues entirely under their watch, and 14 years to do something about any of it, which they haven't.

Have you been somewhere else for the last 14 years, like on another planet?

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 22/05/2024 17:41

TuesdayWhistler · 22/05/2024 17:09

Come back in 5 years.
Let us know how Labour have done with your issues.

Elderly women forced to accept male carers.
Disabled women forced to accept males doing intimate care.
Disability benefits, and all welfare, cut to the core.

there will be no Utopia With Keir and Labour.
Only more people sharing the resources, less and poorer funded services, more cuts and higher tax and any male that wants to access women, kids, elderly and the vulnerable will be allowed to by law.

Maybe instead of telling us all the things you theorise that labour will do you could spare 5 minutes to tell us what it is the tories have done to improve, well anything really, in the last 14 years?

Doesnt matter who wins - all politicians are cunts.

My sentiments exactly. Nothing will change

I'm 66 and am definitely hoping that Labour win.
