How are they doing?
I wanted to show ( brag) you a photo of the first two blooms out on Eustacia Vye. She's gorgeous and smells utterly divine.
Hope the other pet roses you all have are equally successful!

I planted my first roses ever this year. They started blooming a few days ago, and I love them. They're Lady of Shalott.

I've got Vanessa Bell and she was looking lovely until she got bashed by the rain. She'll get deadheaded tomorrow but should bloom again in a few weeks. Both the roses pictured look lovely.

I have Zephirine Drouhin and Generous Gardener from DA, planted last November and this March.

Also have Oh Wow from Canturbury roses (I think) snuck in at the very end of April.

ZD is the oldest and has the most blooms, but GG has many buds. OW has the least, which is not a surprise given the planting order. I have more than doubled the rose contingent of my garden Grin

Both of your photos above look amazing, I don't think my photos do justice to the roses I have.

David Austen iceberg,

I have iceberg too, but she came from the pound shop. She's flowering nicely.
I have to say, the DA rose is fab quality.

Autocorrect, please stop changing rose to rise.

I want more roses now. I did a Rose Count and think I have 17. It's not enough, is it?

I'm just planning my garden now after some building work and would like to plant roses. Been doing some research but would love any tips from those already growing them?... like time of year to plant them, how and when to prune them? Or is that dependent on what you get? Any tips welcome

reprehensibleme · 05/07/2021 08:17

We planted 3 English climbers/ramblers 2 years ago. They have really taken off this year, loads of flowers, beautiful scent, and best of all, repeat flowering.
Malvern Hills
Albrighton
And another whose name escapes me.

Not sure what’s with the divorce ad, but here are my roses!

tunnocksreturns2019 · 05/07/2021 08:20

Always loads of flowers from Olivia rose

lockdownvino.
Good news: have a look at the David Austin site for care advice.
Bad news: everyone seems to be planting DA roses this year so they can be short of stock. We had trouble getting hold of the particular one we wanted but got it in the end, though.Smile

Here’s “Roald Dahl” bought in April and “Poet’s Wife” bought last year.

I want a couple of specific ones from their website but out of stock Sad. However, I may go to visit, just to sniff my way around.

FuzzyPuffling · 05/07/2021 09:01

Bare root ones sold in Autumn/ winter are a tad cheaper and available in larger numbers. Hurry up November...

I am planning to buy some later to plant up but in the meantime I will just keep admiring the ramblers round our old front door.

I really wanted a standard Princess Alexandra of Kent, as the scent is fabulous; I already have a shrub one.
None available so I bought a standard Princess Anne instead. It looks very lovely surrounded by a deep purply blue lavender and Alchemilla Mollis., alternating.

ginghamtablecloths · 05/07/2021 13:40

If this has worked, the pink rose is Rosa Mundi and the yellow/apricot is Molyneux. David Austen never lets you down.

I brought three David Austin roses over winter. They took a little while to get going (understandable with the cold spring and them being bare root) but they've all turned into healthy plants and I'm delighted with them. I've only had climbing roses before, so this is my first foray into shrub roses.

I've got a Queen of Sweden (pink), a Kew garden (white, single) and a Roald Dahl (not quite flowering yet, but some very promising buds!)

I’ve been struggling with a bare root Mortimer Sackler from DA that I planted in March. The only growth has been from under the ground and it’s still only about 30cm tall.
I’ve been in touch with their help line and I’ve just been told to feed it and make sure it’s regularly watered. A bit disappointed in it at the moment really.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 05/07/2021 14:31

Hang on, that's not my queen of Sweden - it's a different rose my mum sent me a photo of last night. Here's mine, plus a bonus photo of our Malvern Hills rambler which looked beautiful last week but took a bit of a hammering in a downfall. It's got plenty of buds though, so hopefully will be better again soon.
