How are they doing?
I wanted to show ( brag) you a photo of the first two blooms out on Eustacia Vye. She's gorgeous and smells utterly divine.
Hope the other pet roses you all have are equally successful!

This is supposed to be New Dawn climber, doesn’t look like it. It was planted in the spring, fed and watered. Load of new growth, which is good, but only one flower and a bud. The flower doesn’t resemble the photos.

That isn’t New Dawn. Did you buy it direct from DA? They are very good at sending replacements/refunds when they send the wrong plant (it often happens).

Beebumble2 · 07/07/2021 15:58

Yes I did, but I wasn’t over fussy about the colour, as long as it spread and had fragrance.
I just hope it gets more blooms. It does seem to have a scent and I’m happily with its climbing potential. I’ll keep it and see what happens.

bruffin · 07/07/2021 16:28

I think beebumbles photo is just washed out.

Beebumble2 · 07/07/2021 17:23

Yes it is pinker than the photo, but not the deep pink I expected. It has the multiple petals, but they’re flat and open. I’ll see how the other bud opens up. Could just be juvenile flowers.
I’m impressed by the growth as I want it trained along the wall.

Yafilthyanimal · 07/07/2021 17:51

Check DA are open before you make the journey.

I went about a month ago and they were still closed!

ThreeKneeRepeater · 07/07/2021 17:56

How come Beebumble’s rose has all that growth and my Generous Gardener on Page 2 is nowhere near, and no sign of a flower?
What am I doing wrong?
Help! I’ve never grown a rose before.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 07/07/2021 18:17

It might be the position you planted it in @ThreeKneeRepeater Roses need sun.
Although having said that, my ‘’Claire’’ is in full sun, and only bloomed today.
And they need so much water too, especially during their first year

@ThreeKneeRepeater this is my generous gardener planted alone against a north east facing wall. It gets sun early in the morning until around 10-11ish. I put a shedload of manure into the planting hole, as well as the beneficial fungus powder that DA sell and recommend, and I am on clay which roses are supposed to love. I planted it in March and it's made fairly decent growth but nothing like Beebumbles. As long as the leaves look good and healthy I wouldn't worry and just try to be patient, it's probably putting all its energy into good strong roots and will romp away next year.

I have another rose - planted at the end of April, arguably in a better position because it has all day sun, but it has to compete with other plants, and it's much smaller and very few blooms.

I must confess 😕. Last year I planted Generous Gardener expecting a wonderful growth and display. It got to about 30cms, turned its nose up and died! I suspect the dry summer, but as you can see it’s next to the garden tap so was always watered.
The current rose is in the same planter, but I completely changed all the compost.

CamCurls · 07/07/2021 20:03

Here is my Olivia Rose Austin just a week after planting. Eleven lovely flowers. My first rose but I suspect it might turn into a collection!

Thanks for the advice to contact DA @JofraArchersFastestBall . I sent them a photo and they’ve agreed the Mortimer Sackler doesn’t look very healthy. I’ve been offered a refund, replacement (although I’d have to wait till November for another bare root), or I can pay the difference and get a potted rose.
I’ve always had bare root before but I think I’ll upgrade to the potted one as I don’t really want to wait.

Lovely thread. Thanks all for the encouragement for my Generous Gardener.
Another question. Should it have special rose food?

LunaNorth · 07/07/2021 21:37

Lady of Shalott and Gertrude Jekyll.

My lady of the lake. It's only 2 years old so not very big yet but it's got a lovely scent and is very prolific when flowering

I find using rose clear is the most important thing rather than rose food, but I do have a lot of access to well rotted manure.
ImbarbaraB · 07/07/2021 21:46

This is my david Austin rose. - The Lark Ascending. It’s only just bloomed.

This was bought for me by DH when baby turned a year old a few months ago.

My other David Austin that I have had a fe W years has been busy blooming for weeks now

@tunnocksreturns2019 Lovely roses - we've deleted that errant ad from your photos.

My ZD 🥰 I am an absolute rose convert this year.

Beebumble2 · 07/07/2021 22:39

I use Wilkos rose food. My other roses are doing rather well, especially Lady of Shallot and City of York. Darcy Bussell is a bit slow this year.
The thunder storms aren’t helping either.

buckeejit · 07/07/2021 22:55

I'm an Eve & bought dh wild eve for our recent 10th anniversary. We have a couple of others but I really want a few more. I've a small wishlist including Gertrude Jekyll & if I get a few more on there, I'll have to make some decisions. Considering digging up the useless strip of lawn at the side of our drive & turning it into a rose bed.....another current project on the go before I can move onto the next 😬

haba · 07/07/2021 23:01

@Eggnoggoanngoanngoann that Kew Garden rose is so pretty! Is it very scented? I love the spread on your first photo- is that really one year's growth? Shock
