How are they doing?
I wanted to show ( brag) you a photo of the first two blooms out on Eustacia Vye. She's gorgeous and smells utterly divine.
Hope the other pet roses you all have are equally successful!

I’ve just stumbled across this thread and have been inspired to purchase an Emily Bronte potted and a Munsted Wood bare root. I have a tiny garden with awful ground, so hope that they will be okay in containers. I’m a gardening novice and have always thought that roses need a lot of care, hopefully I will be up to the challenge.

Two questions for all you DA owners!

Can I plant roses (DA or any other kind) in August/September? Or do I need to wait?

Any recommendations for a climbing rose that will be ok without much sun? It will have sun once it’s climbed the fence but not much until then.

Thank you 😊

My roses have all benefited from last year's lockdown and the extra attention and TLC they received
Bought a couple of new David Austin Roses this year - St Swithun and Compassion( both climbers) and they are also thriving after all the rain and sunshine

Can anyone shed any light on why my DA rose seems to have a couple of stems/leaves which are a completely different colour to the rest?! ie, a browny red colour when the rest is a normal green?

I think the darker stems are 'rogue' ones coming up from the rootstock

TinyCheese · 06/08/2021 14:56

I think that the dark red stems are new growth and will change to green after a few weeks.

TinyCheese · 06/08/2021 15:05

I love DA roses! Really like it that you can select them by size, type and strength of scent, sun/shade planting location and not just colour. Love choosing which ones to get. I have 5 types - Emma Hamilton, Gertrude Jeckyll, Clare Austin, Scepter'd Isle and Gabriel Oak. All flowered well and are waiting for the second flowering after last month's feeding. I would grow more if I had the space!

TinyCheese · 06/08/2021 15:17

Minipie, my Clare Austin is a climber planted in a shady and windy border last August, seems to be doing okay. I think you can plant a potted rose any time, but not during a heatwave or when it's frosty.

minipie · 07/08/2021 08:01

Thanks TinyCheese! That one was on my shortlist so great to know it might work in my tricky spot.

This is mine, Gertrude Jekyll

What a lovely thread!

These are some of my Austins, lady of Shalott, Desdemona and Summer Song. I have a small rose garden in sunrise colours, with these and Princess Anne, the poet's wife, scepter'd isle and golden wedding, which is not an Austin and was planted years ago before I discovered Austins!

I also have a Claire Austin on an east part shade wall and it's doing ok so far. Not as much as the others in happier spots though, perhaps predictably.

Creamcakeandrhinos , that GJ is beautiful. My princess Anne is similar - super thorny though.

I love my David Austin roses! I was a rose virgin, never planted them before, now I’d happily have roses everywhere!

When you see the garden ever day, you don’t really notice how much things have grown. It’s only when I look back at photos that I realise how small they were when I planted them. One year later and they were doing great.

Then a few weeks ago, we had really strong winds which the young stems couldn’t handle. Followed by a 20 minute torrential downpour - I’ve never seen rain like it. My poor roses took a complete battering/drowning.

I spoke to someone at David Austin to check that it would be ok to cut the battered stems right back - as I didn’t want them thickening and hardening in that position. They confirmed it was absolutely fine. Happy to say that, just a few weeks later, they are looking good. It doesn’t look like too much has gone, despite the cuttings having filled up one garden waste wheelie bin.

The standards are Olivia Rose (pale pink) and the shrubs are Gabriel Oak (deep pink). The scent of the Gabriel Oaks just hangs in the air, it’s gorgeous. Even my neighbour has commented and the roses are a fair distance from their driveway.

I’ve also got a Tranquility shrub, which I planted in memory of my cat. The buds emerge as cream and the colour fades to white as they bloom. It’s a lovely shrub, though no real scent to them.

So, that’s the front garden sorted. I’m now trying to figure out where I can create some space in the back garden for more roses. I’m definitely hooked!

So great seeing everyone's photos. I bought Vanessa Bell this year and it's doing great in a part sun spot -- on its second flush now.

Can anyone recommend a DA rose for a container (large pot) in full sun? As in blazing hot direct sunlight throughout the summer? I had The Mayflower in that spot and sadly it frazzled away.
