Climbing rose over front porch?

Would I be crazy to plant a climbing rose next to my front porch? I'm thinking of the thorns - I'd plant it well away from the actual door and prune it so that the growth didn't spread out until above head level but I'd like it to go across the top of the porch so you'd walk under it. Is this a stupid idea?

Just got David Austin catalogue through the door and the climber which suits the position (shady) and my desire for fragrance is Clair Austin - there don't seem to be any suitable near thornless ones.

I think it sounds lovely...but I just got a David Austin catalogue too, and am desperate for a rose arch. It's a very enabling piece of marketing!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/03/2021 08:46

It is isn't it? I didn't know I needed another rose before it arrived... GrinGrinGrin

Just got the catalogue too, wondering how many years to train a rose up my fence and around my balcony??? Grin

FuzzyPuffling · 10/03/2021 09:54

Only one more rose needed? I'm sure I suddenly need three or so! 😉

Banksaei Lutea is thornless. It grows quickly and very easy to manipulate over an Arch. It is pale yellow and is sweetly scented.

FuzzyPuffling · 10/03/2021 11:00

Oh my late mum grew banksia roses. Wonderful memories!

florentina1 · 10/03/2021 11:52

Mine is covered in hundreds of flower buds at the moment. It is so exciting. My friend grows annual sweet peas besides hers so that her porch is always covered in flowers. They come into their own just as the roses are finished flowering.

Zephrine Drouhin rose is a climber with no thrones and a lovely perfume. It is a repeat flowered so lots of blooms.
David Austin is a growers with lovely roses, I have several including Claire Austin. But there are other growers who have a wide range of different Roses.

FuzzyPuffling · 10/03/2021 13:03

I have a Zepherine Drouhin on my house wall. I love her - and she smells gorgeous too.

Thorns aren’t a problem if you prune straggling branches. The quintessential English cottage has roses around the door.

I’ve got roses over an archway over the front gate, which is only a door’s width. Not a problem at all. Mine’s Alistair Stella Gray! A lovely apricot flower which reminds me of the flowers on my wedding cake

Thanks for ideas. It's a bit of a tricky spot because it will only get the early morning sun for a few hours and then it's shaded the rest of the day, and I want a decent perfume and repeat flowering which cuts down my options somewhat. I think adding it thornless to my wish list might make it impossible!

It will be planted well away from the front door and then trained across so I probably don't need to worry so much as long as I prune any dangling stems as mere suggests.

My porch has a flat roof above, and if I allowed it to come up and over the flat roof it would get a lot more sun - is that a feasible idea? It would need to pass over the gutter, and then flop on top of the roof. The roof has recently been recovered in modern fibreglass, so it's completely watertight and in good Nick - no hole for an inquisitive stem to poke into and make trouble.

Would a rose do this - come up and over and then lie down on the top? Would it be a bad idea from property maintenance POV? The roof is easily accessible from an upstairs window for pruning purposes and takes an adults weight (the roofers were huge!)

I'm now thinking that Clair Austin won't be big enough because she only grows to 3.75m, and I measured the height and then length for it to come up to the roof and then a roof over the front door which is 5m. Then if I wanted it to go over the flat roof I'd need an even taller one.

I need advice before I make an expensive mistake!

I have a Zephirine Drouhin in the garden which I planted in November - in a nice sunny spot. It says she needs warmer conditions so I don't think she'd cope with part shade on offer by the door.

Banksaei Lutea looks gorgeous but I want repeat flowering.

Alistair Stella Gray is wonderful but wants full sun.

I'm wondering about Madame Alfred Carriere or the Generous Gardener.

I've got a Mme Alfred Carriere too..she grows very well in a shadyish spot...sun until mid morning and that's it. Flowers well and has a beautiful fragrance.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/03/2021 15:48

Ooh, @FuzzyPuffling do you mind me asking how fast she grows and how big (roughly) yours is. I think he is the larger of the two listed as up to 7.5m, so I thought perhaps best for my roof covering plan - if that will work. Grin

She - random mis-sexing there, not that roses have a sex.

FuzzyPuffling · 10/03/2021 16:14

She was on the garden already when we moved in 5 years ago, but was very unkempt ( probate house) .
She's growing behind. 5' fence and I cut her back to fence level every year. By the end of the season she's probably put on another 6-8 ft of growth.
I get a lot of blackspot on roses here ( I blame the damp climate!) but she doesn't suffer at all. Hurrah!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/03/2021 16:39

Oh, I do like a nice disease resistant variety. I'm too lazy to deal with diseases Grin
Thanks for the info!

I've just discovered the fold out Rose Directory at the back of the David Austin catalogue....oooooh heaven.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/03/2021 16:54

I'm very impressed that you know the variety having inherited her! I have two inherited roses and no idea what they are. One is very pretty but disease prone. It may have to go at some point if it doesn't improve.

Oooh, I am so following this thread! We are moving house in a few months to a country farmhouse which is just crying out for a pergola/arbour/some structure around the front door, festooned with beautiful, highly scented roses 😍. I've also been researching the David Austin catalogue. Our door is south facing so a bit more choice of thornless roses but I would love any recommendations!!

FuzzyPuffling · 10/03/2021 17:07

It took several years to identify her! And I could still be wrong! (But I really do think she is Mme AC)
FuzzyPuffling · 10/03/2021 17:08

I have Iceberg (in a big pot) going up the pillar by my front door - and bought her (him?) from the Poundshop!

FuzzyPuffling · 10/03/2021 18:16

I just got a 15% off email from David Austin. They know we're talking....

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/03/2021 18:40

Scary 😱😂

Albertine is very prolific. My sister's grew right up the side of her house.
