Climbing rose over front porch?

Would I be crazy to plant a climbing rose next to my front porch? I'm thinking of the thorns - I'd plant it well away from the actual door and prune it so that the growth didn't spread out until above head level but I'd like it to go across the top of the porch so you'd walk under it. Is this a stupid idea?

Just got David Austin catalogue through the door and the climber which suits the position (shady) and my desire for fragrance is Clair Austin - there don't seem to be any suitable near thornless ones.

Can’t wait for mine to start budding and flowering. I’m going to buy my mum a David Austen rose for her birthday. I’m thinking mid or pale pink and as a stand alone on its own she has lots of space. Any recommendations anyone. Would like one that’s easy to maintain and fragrant too.

FuzzyPuffling · 19/03/2021 07:40

online that's a fabulous present idea. I have several roses that my late mum.bought for me, and one called "My Mum" that my cousin got me when my mum died and they are just the best reminders of my gardening guru.
Is there a rose that incorporates your mum's name, or something she's fond of, or a sentiment?

I planted Zepherine Drouhin in a very shady garden ie only got sun in the summer and only part of the day - it was quite scrawny sadly.
I have an American Pillar growing through a tree it is nice and bright. It's not in the shade but I'm in west Scotland so don't get a huge amount of sun.

Have to admit that is an example of an American Pillar, but not mine.
Mine grows well but is hidden by the leaves on the tree Hmm

@florentina1

Banksaei Lutea is thornless. It grows quickly and very easy to manipulate over an Arch. It is pale yellow and is sweetly scented.
Lovely

fuzzy I’ve asked her if she likes any particular roses and she said anything! I’ll have a look at My Mum is that a David Austen one?

PlingPlingPling · 19/03/2021 11:12

I love the look of those banksia roses.

Stickytreacle · 19/03/2021 11:20

I hope Oh wow lives up to its name! I have oranges and lemons which is a bi colour, but can be tricky to place colour wise I think, and rosa mundi, but that only flowers once, I don't really have the space to justify a once only flowerer, they really need to earn their keep in my garden!

Candleabra · 19/03/2021 15:00

I cannot wait to get my new garden so I can get planting. I absolutely love roses. This is a great thread.

DEW PATCH ALERT!!!
Eusty's on her way!

AlwaysLatte · 19/03/2021 17:20

We planted one either side of our front porch, I think they're David Austin ones and they're so lovely. A couple of things that I wish I'd done though is 1. Got thornless ones as the loose bits that inevitably come free from time to time do like to attack anyone trying to leave the house and 2. This rose only flowers properly once, rather than keeping on going all summer.

@Onlinedilema Roald Dahl is a beauty ♥️. Ours was newly planted last year and it flowered all summer and well into October.

Well I haven't bought any new roses yet, waiting until we move for that, but my dad has bought me THREE magnolias from Lidl today!! He wanted to buy me a tree/shrub for the new garden but couldn't decide between the three varieties of magnolia they had on special offer! So he bought them all 😂. Fortunately the garden is very large!!!

catwithflowers that is gorgeous.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 19/03/2021 17:47

Sundances that ones a beauty!

stickytreacle yes - I have a once flowering rambler, which I didn't plant, and while it is amazing when it's in flower the rest of the year it's a bit of a vicious beast who attacks anyone who comes near and takes up far too much space in my little garden.

candleabra is a new garden in the pipeline? This is my first ever garden, I was sooooo excited on moving day, about the garden more than anything.

Alwayslatte that is divine Smile
It's the sneaky trailing thorns that worried me, but I've done it not so I just hope Gigi is not as vicious as the rambler...

catwithflowers 3 magnolias?!? I am soo dying of envy. I LOVE magnolias Grin

FuzzyPuffling · 19/03/2021 18:04

Very jealous of the magnolias (I have one stellata in a massive pot. It was the only decent thing left in the garden when we moved in)

And those lovely roses. I want to fill my garden with roses now. Only not the trad "rose garden" like my grandpa had, in which they were standing in rows and looked a bit forlorn. I like mixed borders with lots of stuff going on!

catwithflowers · 19/03/2021 18:46

FuzzyPuffling Stellata is one of the ones dad bought! Another is called Susan and he can't remember the third 😂. They are still in his car I think, waiting for me to collect them!!!

FuzzyPuffling · 19/03/2021 21:02

Oooh you're a lucky cat. How exciting!!

Stickytreacle · 20/03/2021 08:13

Oh stellata magnolias are gorgeous, my oldneighbour was a keen gardener and had a lovely one in his front garden. He died and new neighbours moved in, they were just taking a spade to remove it when I said what a lovely shrub it was and they decided to leave it, that was twenty years ago and its a beauty now!
Sadly at the rear of my garden new neighbours have ripped out a gorgeous establishef garden with loads of lovely shrubs, it's a square of grass with panel fencing now and looks awful. Im over compensating on my side though!

Onlinedilema · 20/03/2021 10:39

Has anyone ordered from Trevor White roses?

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 20/03/2021 18:35

Sorry online I haven't.

I have had a text from Royal Mail
Indicating a delivery on Monday, which I suspect to be the dew patch for Oh Wow 🤩
More baby rose pics to come...!
