Climbing rose over front porch?

Would I be crazy to plant a climbing rose next to my front porch? I'm thinking of the thorns - I'd plant it well away from the actual door and prune it so that the growth didn't spread out until above head level but I'd like it to go across the top of the porch so you'd walk under it. Is this a stupid idea?

Just got David Austin catalogue through the door and the climber which suits the position (shady) and my desire for fragrance is Clair Austin - there don't seem to be any suitable near thornless ones.

I think that one is from the David Austin Instagram page. One day my garden will look like that!

FuzzyPuffling · 12/03/2021 15:37

I need, really really need to find the right place for an arch in my garden. It needs to have a purpose doesn't it? Rather than just a random arch looking abandoned. I may have to redesign the whole garden!

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/03/2021 13:13

Fuzzy - stick a seat under it to give it purpose. Then it can go wherever you want.

Or you can put it anywhere along a path, when its purpose is to allow you to pass under that rose bush that would be otherwise growing unsupported.

Agree it might look odd just plonked in the middle of the lawn. Though several elegant pyramids with climbing roses would be a different matter entirely.

Excellent advice...thank you!

That's my plan @MereDintofPandiculation, a random rose arch pathway leading to a bench.

Pogmaasal · 13/03/2021 20:16

Ohh this is dangerous...Im now also trying to find a rose that would grow along the top of an arbour the length of my side alley which is nearly always in shade 🤦‍♀️

These are climbers in the David Austin catalog that are happy in shady areas. I can take pictures of the pages if you don't have the book.

Rose for a large pot...I am very much liking the look of "Eustacia Vye". Anyone got her?

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 14/03/2021 09:19

The catalogue is lovely - but there are a wider selection online. The online site suggest more climbers for shade than the book does. I love this thread.

I'm now thinking that I will have to repaint my porch to better set off Gigi. 🤦‍♀️

I might take a look at Peter Beales...just for balance....

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 14/03/2021 13:03

Argh, now I've looked there too. Trying to claw my way out of another pleasant rabbit hole

I have a few David Austin roses -love them a first bought from them over 20 years ago

I have the Generous Gardener growing up my garage and above the double garage door - it is prolific and the flowers are so beautiful - it looks wonderful - if I ever move I'm definitely taking it with me plus buying another

My other favourite from DA is LD Braithwaite - I have 3 in front garden - this year last flowers were in mid November

RedRiverShore · 15/03/2021 06:49

We have this around our arch and along our garage,

I have a Gertrude jekyll rose David Austin growing over my front porch. The scent is heaven when zi come home from work. The thorns are no problem. I just make sure its pruned away from the door.

Yes, but only this year so she currently looks like 4 twigs.

This persuaded me: rightroses.com/eustacia-vye

FuzzyPuffling · 15/03/2021 13:05

Thefirsttime, I like the sound of "just too perfect".

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/03/2021 13:07

I have a Gertrude jekyll rose David Austin growing over my front porch. The scent is heaven when zi come home from work. I have a sweet briar along the driveway, lovely smell (fresh apples, rather than rose), especially after rain. And it doesn't have to have flowers on to get the smell, because the smell comes from scent glands on the leaves.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/03/2021 13:45

I've ordered Eustacia Vye.

Pogmaasal · 15/03/2021 16:32

Between this and all the changes I want to make to the house, I shall soon be completely broke and possibly divorced. But with an incredibly pretty rose display, so I may plunder forwards regardless!

Pogmaasal · 15/03/2021 16:33

@lunar1 thank you for that. Ive had trouble changing my address on the David Austin website so I haven't had my fix -catalogue- so far!

Thefirsttime · 15/03/2021 17:07

Sorry!
BewareTheBeardedDragon · 15/03/2021 17:10

mere sweet briar sounds enticing!

I've just had my order dew patch email. 2-3days to wait for my new baby. GrinGrin

Definitely no "sorry" required!

I hope we get live planting updates 🤣
FuzzyPuffling · 15/03/2021 18:39

And when that first flower comes out, we'll have a party!
