Climbing rose over front porch?

Would I be crazy to plant a climbing rose next to my front porch? I'm thinking of the thorns - I'd plant it well away from the actual door and prune it so that the growth didn't spread out until above head level but I'd like it to go across the top of the porch so you'd walk under it. Is this a stupid idea?

Just got David Austin catalogue through the door and the climber which suits the position (shady) and my desire for fragrance is Clair Austin - there don't seem to be any suitable near thornless ones.

Looking again - Zephirine Drouhin is recommended by some as good for shade, but not by DA. RHS notes about it say it needs full sun in the picture key, but then in the details at the bottom of the page say it is good for shade, poor soil and north facing Confused
So now I'm wondering if I should be thrift and take a cutting from her when she's big enough to get one to go over the porch as well. I don't know if two of the same rose relatively close (current one is out in the sunny part of the front garden) would be overkill, or might be sticking to the principle they all say on the garden design shows of more of one variety rather than a mush mash. I guess the scents of two quite close might fight with one another?
I wonder if one can take a cutting during a roses first year in the ground? I will need to cut some of the stems right down anyway at some point because she currently has too many for my purposes. I'm waiting to see which ones grow in which direction before deciding which to cull.

Off the research rose cuttings.

My favourite rose (not a climber, but still...) is Bonica. Beautiful clear pink multiple flowers all season, and then red hips.
The original was a cutting from my mum (who taught me all I know about gardening and I wish I had taken a lot more notice!) and I have it's great grandchild in m y current garden. It seems to strike well from cuttings, so I might multiply her this year....

WashableVelvet · 10/03/2021 19:26

I have Claire Austin by the front door, went in as a bare root rose a year ago and should reach the top of the door this year and over the porch next year, is my guess. It’s in a pot so I couldn’t get a huge one - I’m struggling to imagine what your door must be like if it needs a 5m high rose!!

Mme Alfred Carriere is an absolute bruiser, so be careful. It could easily reach house roof height and our neighbour’s 20yo one punched a hole right through their garage roof over time Shock

FreezerBird · 10/03/2021 19:33

Ooh this might be the thread for me, if you don't mind me popping up with a question OP?

I'd love a rose to clamber over the front door. We don't have a porch, but do have a silly little roof which sticks out over the door and is neither use nor ornament. So it would need a trellis on the house to climb up and then hopefully over the little roof bit.

So far, so doable I think but it's north-facing, windy and would need to go in a container as it's all hard surfaces out there.

Is this even possible?

catwithflowers · 10/03/2021 19:39

I'm loving this one. New Dawn 💕

I know how MN loves a diagram - so here is a crappy drawing of why I need 5m of rose Grin
I live in a 60s semi - but the position where I could plant a rose is in front of the brick pier between the covered porch and the garage. The height is 2.5m from ground to the porch roof, and then another 2.5m from the pier to the end of the porch over the front door. So if I got a smaller one, 3.75m, the rose would stop before the door and look a bit odd.

I definitely don't want one who will try to break into my house so Madame carriere is out I think. I'm leaning towards the Generous Gardener I think. Have discounted cuttings from Zephirine because I'm impatient she is not recommended for walls because she's prone to mildew without proper air circulation.

@FuzzyPuffling

I have a Zepherine Drouhin on my house wall. I love her - and she smells gorgeous too.

@FuzzyPuffling What do you have on your wall, a trellis? Also is your wall north or south facing? Thanks!

Missed this, bloody hell fuzzy how many roses do you own?!? Grin So she doesn't get mildew for you then? Have you kept a good gap between wall and rose?

@BewareTheBeardedDragon We have Generous Gardener in our current garden climbing up a trellis. We just put it in last year (and are taking it with us!!). It's a really beautiful rose. It's in a slightly windy position and shaded by the garage for part of the day in summer but flowered well last summer and is growing back strongly.

LakieLady · 10/03/2021 20:04

@FuzzyPuffling

I've got a Mme Alfred Carriere too..she grows very well in a shadyish spot...sun until mid morning and that's it. Flowers well and has a beautiful fragrance.
I think Mme Carriere might be my favourite rose. Such a lovely scent.

I wanted to put a trellis above my bay window, below the bedroom window, and plant Mme Alfred Carriere, so that the fragrance would drift in, but rose-growing friends felt my thin, chalky soil and east-facing aspect would be challenging for a rose.

FuzzyPuffling · 10/03/2021 20:32

Ha ha... I do have a "few" roses. Zepherine drouhin grows up a lump of driftwood and then wires. It is so bloody windy here mildew stands little chance. Air circulation is like being in a wind tunnel most of the time. She's SW facing, so the opposite of mme AC, sun from 11am onwards.

This year's new rose is "For Your Eyes Only". I thought it looked pretty and it's in a pot for the time being.

BewareTheBeardedDragon excellent drawing. I feel that a rose is exactly what is needed there.

FuzzyPuffling · 10/03/2021 20:34

PS. Do NOT get "Kiftsgate". Beautiful, but you will never find your house again.

sesquipedalia · 10/03/2021 20:42

Lady Hillingdon is also beautiful but prolific. She's known as 'Lady 'Illingdon' in our house (imagine as scullery maid speaking ...) due to her thuggish tendencies.

Not that all my rides have personalities...

She grew like the clappers in partial shade by the front door.

This year I'm trying a Gertrude Jekyll instead. She's Already become Gertie, I hope she doesn't mind.

sesquipedalia · 10/03/2021 20:43

roses not rides. Damn it!!

FuzzyPuffling · 10/03/2021 20:52

Rides was funny though! 😁

Crikey - thought we'd strayed from gardening for a moment there. Racy. GrinGrinGrin

Fuzzy the house is great with huge windows and lovely views, but it is not architecturally lovely. Fugly is the word that springs to mind. It definitely needs beautifying with nature.

OP posts:
FuzzyPuffling · 10/03/2021 21:01

It needs several roses then...a white one, a pink one and a blush one. At least.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/03/2021 21:08

Sadly I can't justify the expense of multiple roses at once - one, I can give myself as a mothers day present on behalf of the dc... BlushGrin

Oooh I have the David Austin catalogue too... it came with my Generous Gardener which I planted at the WE against a mostly shady fence and am very excited about

I had Mm Alfred Carriere in a previous house and adored her. She (liking the she) completely covered an east-facing 2 story wall, repeat flowering, stunning and scented. Blackbirds nested in her every year and she was very forgiving of a big hack-back each winter.

Had Zephrine drouhin (Zeffers) in that garden too and while it smelled gorgeous it never wowed somehow. Thornley was hood as round a gate but didn't blow me away, always a bit stiff and sparse.

Penny Lane is divine if you get about half sun, I've planted one in every garden I've had.

Please tell us what you choose!

OneMoreForExtra · 10/03/2021 22:20

*thornless was good Blush

Cuttings might be fun, but most roses are grafted onto stronger rootstock, so might not get quite the same results

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/03/2021 22:49

Oh I'm so glad you've said that about cuttings @OneMoreForExtra - now I can stop feeling guilty about wanting to take the easy and quicker route GrinGrin

My Alistair Stella Gray is on the north side of the house so for half the year it gets early morning sun and late evening sun, basically when the sun is towards NE or NW. And for a short period around the solstice it gets sun near midday over the roof. But if this is a once only purchase you need to go with something you are confident with.

FuzzyPuffling · 11/03/2021 14:46

I want a "Penny Lane" now. Will have to think of somewhere to put it. I need an arch.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 11/03/2021 16:42

Ok, I think I've decided on the generous gardener 😬😃

I have removed pavers, removed the sand and hardcore beneath, and dug a deep hole in the solid clay and flints beneath. Phew. I have stabbed all the edges of the hole with my fork to encourage roots to head outwards, and plan to back fill with compost and manure. Should I mix some of the clay back in with the compost manure mix, since roses like clay, or is it best not to since it will be entirely surrounded?
