Climbing rose over front porch?

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 09/03/2021 20:34

Would I be crazy to plant a climbing rose next to my front porch? I'm thinking of the thorns - I'd plant it well away from the actual door and prune it so that the growth didn't spread out until above head level but I'd like it to go across the top of the porch so you'd walk under it. Is this a stupid idea?

Just got David Austin catalogue through the door and the climber which suits the position (shady) and my desire for fragrance is Clair Austin - there don't seem to be any suitable near thornless ones.

I've done it - it's ordered. Now I'm excited and impatient...

Oooh that is so very exciting. This is better than the live birth threads....

I'd give your new baby some good dollops of garden compost and maybe a bit of clay to help retain a bit of moisture for her. (Is it a girl?)

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 11/03/2021 19:55

Oh she's definitely female! DA say delivery before the 25th, godammit - how can I wait so long (with a large hole now between the front door and the garage which I don't want to back fill until she arrives because I don't want to have to dig it out again to plant her.)?!? ConfusedGrinConfused
I've ordered some micro-thingy fungus stuff to help the roots establish.

I now need to decide which kind of wire to use and get it attached in readiness for her arrival. I'm not looking forward to that but - hate drilling into brick, but it has to be done. And wire recommendations?

Fucksake - 'bit' 'any' Hmm

That bloody catalogue is a menace. I couldn't sleep in the storm last night and ordered three. I have absolutely no idea where they will fit in my garden, but the pictures are so pretty.

I'm sure my husband won't notice if another rose bed appears where there is currently lawn 👀

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 11/03/2021 20:10

Ha - I was also woken by the wind roaring in the small hours and spent the time planning my little spree of paving destruction today GrinGrin
I so wanted to get another one - a small container friendly lady who looks like an old
Fashioned rose but repeat flowering. I was strong and stuck to one (now I can't order more and wipe out the saving by doubling postage SadGrin)

Kew Gardens she is called. Small but perfectly formed. Sigh.

And horse manure - my MIL, who has the most amazing garden and is mad for roses - reckons the 4 sacks of well-rotted horse manure (@ £1 a bag from a local stables) was one of the best presents she's ever had. Her roses that year were the most splendid they've ever been, she says.

Of course, I now pick up a couple of bags for her every time I go and visit. It's nice to have a MIL who appreciates such humble gifts. Grin

I saw this thread last night and it's popped up again tonight. Time to get a rose around my front door I think 🤣

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 11/03/2021 21:15

snow do it, do it, and talk to use about your choice making! Share the joy Grin

Go big or go home OP. You can always cut it back but you cant will it to grow if its reached max height.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 11/03/2021 21:40

Well - there seems to be mixed heights quoted for GG (oh, oh, I've just realised she now has a name, Gigi) but RHS has it at 4-8m and I hope they are reliable so that should be enough. If it stops short of where I want it I could always make another hole on the other side and plant another one (mwa ha ha).

I think Gigi sounds glorious and I want one now. I am displaying serious rose- coveting behaviour.
Please post photos when she arrives and is planted.

I have a folder in my phone full of pictures of how I imagine my ultimate garden will look. We plan one last house move first though, so I'm collecting David Austin roses in huge pots until then.

I am digging the ones in the ground up and potting them before the house goes on the market! I keep hens, so always get great displays even in pots due to the compost.

catwithflowers · 12/03/2021 11:47

lunar1 I have a Pinterest board which sounds similar to your collection, loads of photos of my ideal garden including LOTS of roses😂. One more move for us within the next few months then we will have a huge garden. I've asked for David Austin gift cards from all the kids for my birthday next month!!!

Pogmaasal · 12/03/2021 11:53

Id love to do this!! But by our front door is solid concrete path so they need to grow well out of a pot or planter, and also we live near the coast so the winds are tremendous and I'm not sure if they'd survive. We have roses in the back garden but theyre more protected from the wind there

FuzzyPuffling · 12/03/2021 12:03

Pogmaasal I'm also by the coast on a very very windy hill. Let's swap rose notes!

FreezerBird · 12/03/2021 12:58

@Pogmaasal that's pretty much my situation - coastal, windy, hard standing, and for added fun, north facing.

I still want to do it though.

A friend recommended using a big zinc trough as a container - from an agricultural supplier rather than somewhere aiming at gardeners so cheaper. I then worry about drainage though.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 12/03/2021 13:27

I am on top of a hill and back garden faces the prevailing winds - quite exposed but the roses there seem to cope. Unfortunately I've no idea which they are as they came with the house.
Freezer just drill drainage holes - easy peasy! Sounds a great plan!

I've just been watching pride and prejudice - could just see Mr Darcy striding through that arch Grin

Pogmaasal · 12/03/2021 14:41

@FreezerBird and @BewareTheBeardedDragon thank you for that. That has given me hope!!

@lunar1 that is beautiful!! I would love an arch in the garden too
