Climbing rose over front porch?

Would I be crazy to plant a climbing rose next to my front porch? I'm thinking of the thorns - I'd plant it well away from the actual door and prune it so that the growth didn't spread out until above head level but I'd like it to go across the top of the porch so you'd walk under it. Is this a stupid idea?

Just got David Austin catalogue through the door and the climber which suits the position (shady) and my desire for fragrance is Clair Austin - there don't seem to be any suitable near thornless ones.

I've never heard of Trevor White. Must Google....

FuzzyPuffling · 20/03/2021 20:48

bearded that's a speedy dew patch. Next week is Baby Rose Week!

@florentina1

Banksaei Lutea is thornless. It grows quickly and very easy to manipulate over an Arch. It is pale yellow and is sweetly scented.
I was just about to ask if you find a scented yellow let me know. I'll look that one up and see if it's what I'm after, thank you for the suggestion

@BewareTheBeardedDragon a new garden is on the horizon. New build, due for completion in August. I am so excited!

That’s just what I was thinking.

This thread is dangerous. It has already inspired me to order 3 more roses. It would have only been 2 more, but I couldn’t decide between another Claire Austin and a wollerton old hall so I did the obviously sensible thing and bought both.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 21/03/2021 23:47

@Candleabra how lovely! Congratulations Smile

thefirsttime that was eminently sensible of you GrinGrinGrin

Onlinedilema asked about Trevor White Roses. I’ve ordered from them (as well as from David Austin and Peter Beales) over the last couple of years and I’d happily order from any of them again.

FuzzyPuffling · 22/03/2021 07:44

I had a WhatsApp conversation with my friend up the road last night, and talk turned to roses. She's persuaded and I will drop my David Austin catalogue through her door later today.
Another convert...😁

Stickytreacle · 22/03/2021 08:06

@onlinedilemma. I've ordered from Trevor White roses before, it was a bareroot so I had to wait until it was ready, but no issues with delivery and a healthy rose turned up.

Here's Eusty in her new home. She has little buds on already!

Ooh, she looks lovely and healthy!

My new girl also arrived today. Here she is, cosying up with a clematis who was already there Smile

Lovely partnership! What colour is the clematis?

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 22/03/2021 16:54

It's blueish purple, but doesn't flower hugely. At least it hasn't, but it used to be a bit swamped and I've cleared a good space around it this year. Fingers crossed they get on Grin

I expect it just wanted a little friend. They will both flower with joy now! (Of course, pictures will be required!)

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 22/03/2021 17:13

That's it for sure! Do roses bloom in their first year? If so pictures go without saying!

Eusty says she will do her best to make a flower. I hope she's right.

My generous gardener is planted and I can't wait for her to grow. I blame you lot!
