Climbing rose over front porch?

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 09/03/2021 20:34

Would I be crazy to plant a climbing rose next to my front porch? I'm thinking of the thorns - I'd plant it well away from the actual door and prune it so that the growth didn't spread out until above head level but I'd like it to go across the top of the porch so you'd walk under it. Is this a stupid idea?

Just got David Austin catalogue through the door and the climber which suits the position (shady) and my desire for fragrance is Clair Austin - there don't seem to be any suitable near thornless ones.

Omg, order despatch, I really need to start proofreading my posts.

Live planting updates will be forthcoming (I need a little distraction in my life Grin)

I understood a "dew patch". It sounds like a very lovely gardening term.

Apparently it's a 10 day window for Eustacia to arrive.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 15/03/2021 19:37

Take heart - mine had a 10 working day window but if she arrives within the next 3 days as per the dew patch Wink it will only have been 5 working days.

Oooer
The pot I'm planning for Eusty ( getting familiar already) has a Hebe in it. The Hebe needs to.go in the garden. I'd better get digging....

NotSeenBulling · 15/03/2021 21:34

@FuzzyPuffling

PS. Do NOT get "Kiftsgate". Beautiful, but you will never find your house again.
This. Phillipe Kiftsgate is a rambler rather than a climber. I bought one to plant on the grave of a much loved dog. You honestly would not believe how big this rose is now. It's stunning. It has grown up a dying plum tree and has become a tree in it's own right now. It's like snow in summer.

She's here!!! And soaking in a nice cold bath right now. Will update with pics once she's in her bed GrinGrin

I am a David Austin fan also! These are Roald Dahl, Olivia & Pilgrim (climber). I invested in some bare roots over winter so am so excited to see how they go! Would love to see some pics of other peoples roses 🌹

Oooh ooh oooh BeardedDragon that is exciting. Does she look sturdy?

I have cleared the hebe out of the big pot in anticipation of Eusty using it. (The hebe has a spot in the border where it will be much happier - it was very pot bound anyway. No hebes died in the production of this alteration)

FuzzyPuffling · 17/03/2021 13:08

This is the wayy what lovely roses. I'll photograph mine in the summer when (if) they bloom! They don;t look terribly impressive now!

ThisIsTheWayy · 17/03/2021 13:22

@FuzzyPuffling thank you! Mine don't either right now, just starting to kick all their new growth out & fresh leaves. I inspect them pretty much every morning 🤣 it's so exciting! All are in 50cm pots for the minute as I'm not brave enough to commit to the ground yet 🙈

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 17/03/2021 14:43

Thisisthewayy gorgeous!

Gigi is a sturdy looking lass, as with all newborns not very pretty just yet and has occasioned a lot of mess and upheaval but she is now bedded down in a lovely mix of manure, clay, leaf mould and compost, topped with wood chips, and finished with an ugly toddler gate to prevent interference from child or dog....

Here she is, fairly hard to spot amongst the wood chips 😂😂😂

Lucky I drilled in the screws for her support wire yesterday. That made a lot of mess.

I'm relieved to hear the hebe lives fuzzy, I do love a good hebe! I had a beautiful one stolen from a pot on my front steps some years ago. I've never fully got over that.

Gigi and Zeph look well settled in.She'll be gorgeous.
My Zeph has a few small leaves, but the 5 day high winds last week scared her off a bit. I'm quite excited for the arrival of Eusty now. I keep checking my email in case i have a dew patch message. Not yet....

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 17/03/2021 15:48

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an early dew patch for you 🤞🤞🤞

Does anyone know if the same microrhizzal stuff can be used for fruit trees as for roses? I had enough for 3 roses in my pouch, and I have two pear trees on the way. Would be ha day if I could use it for them.

Ha day = handy Confused

FuzzyPuffling · 17/03/2021 18:49

I know nothing about Myco whatnot fungi (well, I know the principle) but I would definitely give it a go on your pear trees. Can;t see it would do any harm and the chances are it would do a lot of good.

Are the plugs in the wall for the rose or already there?

You can screw hooks in when she's ready and use them for wire to tie her in.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 18/03/2021 12:26

I put them there specially! The wire arrived this morning GrinSmileGrin

OP posts:
FuzzyPuffling · 18/03/2021 12:40

Gives her something to aspire to!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 18/03/2021 12:43

Quite Grin

Bit like when dc are reluctant to go up to bed I 'race' them, and then exclaim loudly my disappointment at losing again... I will make loud remarks about how she'll never reach the top of the wire and I will get there first, to spur her on GrinGrin

Ooh, another rose lover here, I've currently got three sat in pots trying to find a suitable spot for them, Night Owl, Wild Rover and Oh Wow. One of my best climbers has been Gertrude Jekyll, although I tried moving her and sadly killed her off. My worst climber has been New Dawn, just riddled with blackspot and ended up getting removed.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 18/03/2021 13:06

Those are all lovely treacle but Oh Wow really deserves her name. I am sorely tempted. I love bi-coloured roses, and I don't have one...

OP posts:
BewareTheBeardedDragon · 18/03/2021 18:14

This thread is a dangerous place - I have just bought an Oh Wow, having scouted the garden for a suitable position for her earlier. In fairness I had been on the lookout for a scented bi-colour for some time so it's not completely spur of the moment

Thanks @Stickytreacle

@FuzzyPuffling I expect pics of Eusty when she arrives SmileGrin

Glad I found this thread. I have just planted The pilgrim, Grace and Roald Dahl.

FuzzyPuffling · 18/03/2021 19:24

I don't have a bicolour rose but I do have a (fairly subtle) bicolour camellia. She's gorgeous, pale and dark pink stripes. We had a tortoiseshell cat who died young of a heart attack and I think of the camellia as her tribute as they were both multi coloured.
