Hi 👋
I thought it might be nice to have a support thread for us parents? (Can't see one in further Ed yet??)
It's been such a difficult time for our kids - and for us! - but the end is in sight!
Ds will get an e mail at 8.30am (apparently) and can go into college in person if he needs help/advice.
Good luck everyone!

My daughter is out tonight and hasn't ruled out going to a club, she seems very zen about it all working out and refuses to look at clearing etc as that would be manifesting failure, good grief!

Artdecolover · 09/08/2021 18:43

"Manifesting failure"??

I like that!

pistachioicecream · 09/08/2021 19:14

Does anyone else here have a DC with Cardiff as their insurance or firm?
Is the Sims portal down do you know?

Artdecolover · 09/08/2021 19:15

I've just eaten half a box of biscuits

ablutiions · 09/08/2021 20:18

Have been scrolling through clearing places for DS' subject. Not very inspiring. He's promised to call from sunny climes tomorrow as soon as he can log onto UCAS.

I'm feeling sick with nerves.

How's everyone else doing?

Artdecolover · 09/08/2021 20:20

I've eaten the other half of the box of biscuits...🍪

Artdecolover · 09/08/2021 20:20

I'm considering a bath but I'm worried about the biscuits ballast issue

Babaloola · 09/08/2021 20:23

I have had a bath and am now contemplating wine 🍷

ablutiions · 09/08/2021 20:28

I've been on the wine for ages. Slackers. Grin

Artdecolover · 09/08/2021 20:32

Oh!
Dh is making bellinis 🍸
Nice

Iimaginethiswillbefun · 09/08/2021 20:45

Can I join? Also a nervous wreck and haven’t read whole thread but as a university virgin can someone explain clearing to me? Is it all online? And how do you ‘do it’

AncientandFabulous · 09/08/2021 20:49

Not read all the thread but feeling sick. I doubt I’ll be able to sleep.

We are going in at 9 tomorrow to pick up results & hopefully will have some idea but not hopeful.

Courses are also in clearing so not sure if that’s good or bad.

Apparently my words are nice & reassuring but not my tone….

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 09/08/2021 20:50

Me and the tub of mint choc chip ice-cream are on very good terms this evening - was going to ride to distract myself, but horse has thrown a shoe 🙄 ds2 is chatting online with his mates.

Babaloola · 09/08/2021 20:53

NotSorry · 09/08/2021 21:12

Just got home from work, bloody knackered

DS3 busy telling me all his social plans for the next 2 days, not fazed at all

Watching Love Island, then bed

If your son/daughter isn't holding an offers - either because they didn't receive any or they haven't met the conditions - they can enter Clearing via the UCAS web site/app. They will be given a Clearing number to provide to universities so that they can access their record and can officially make offers.

However, most of the process is done on the phone. They will need to call individual universities to ask about places on specific courses, so they really need a clear idea of which of that institution's courses they are interested in before they call. They need to have all their qualification grades to hand, as the people on the Clearing lines probably won't have time to look them up.

Some admissions tutors might want to talk to students before they're made offers. And, of course, some courses have to interview (health professions, education, social work, etc.), which will be done online or over the phone.

Get your son/daughter to watch one of the videos with you. Others who have direct experience of it as a student/parent will give you more details.

Anyone know what time UCAS opens tomorrow? I’d been told 8am by school and friends but dd went on this evening and it said 8.30?

whatisthisinhere · 09/08/2021 21:52

Ds's sixth firm have been extremely helpful. They've emailed him a step by step guide for results day, with instructions for clearing, and even a script to follow for phone conversations with universities for clearing. It's certainly calming my nerves, it seems he has a lot of support. I'm taking him in tomorrow morning around 8.30 to pick up his results and get extra support from his teachers. He's quite close to them, and values their support, as do I. It is such a lovely place with amazing staff.
I just hope he finds the same wherever he goes next

pistachioicecream · 09/08/2021 21:53

Trying to keep nerves in check. Running through all possible outcomes and hoping that I don’t have to engage in the “complex parenting” described above! Love that phrase.

DS feeling miserable enough with having covid; he doesn’t need missing his grades on top of that.

But really they’ve all had such a miserable sixth form experience just want them to be able to move on to the next stage and put it all behind them.

Hope everyone manages to get some sleep.

Dragonfly101 · 09/08/2021 22:02

I asked DS if he was going to sleep okay tonight or worry all night. He replied why would he struggle to sleep?
'Because of tomorrow'.
'What's tomorrow? Oh I forgot'
(!!!!!!!!!!WHAT!!!!!!!!)
'Also if I'm sleep tomorrow at 8:30 don't wake me and I'm not going into school I'll wait for the email! '

TheSmallAssassin · 09/08/2021 22:07
Anyone know what time UCAS opens tomorrow? I’d been told 8am by school and friends but dd went on this evening and it said 8.30?
The email from UCAS today says 8:30.

DahliaMacNamara · 09/08/2021 22:08

DD, having finally been persuaded that she needs to be awake for 8:30: 'But I can go back to bed after, right?'
I can only hope that yes, she can go back to bed.

clary · 09/08/2021 22:08

@Iimaginethiswillbefun we did clearing with dd and my tip would be to be realistic in terms of who you ring, don't bother trying to negotiate. Dd got BCC and places offering BBB weren't interested.

At the end of the day she had four offers, got to a clearing offer day for the best on the following day. Had to make decision by 6pm that next day.

It will be v different this year tho I suspect - friend has just sent me a message from Loughborough saying no places in clearing or adjustment - I assume at the uni overall which is v unusual. Arrgh crossing fingers for ds2
