Hi 👋
I thought it might be nice to have a support thread for us parents? (Can't see one in further Ed yet??)
It's been such a difficult time for our kids - and for us! - but the end is in sight!
Ds will get an e mail at 8.30am (apparently) and can go into college in person if he needs help/advice.
Good luck everyone!

@Bryonyshcmyony They didn’t know what we were predicting. But we did, and we knew what their firm choice offers were. So for every student who might need a priority appeal we ran all of the checks before staff went on holiday so that if the student made an appeal on results day we could give them the outcome immediately, having checked it all in advance.

MaddieElla · 16/08/2021 21:43

To be fair DDs stage 1 appeal came back very quickly, so it's possible they did the same thing. We were expecting them to say of course there's been no mistake our end.

Stage 2 appeal went off on Thursday.

vjg13 · 16/08/2021 22:19

How long is the second appeal likely to take?

MaddieElla · 16/08/2021 23:23

I think the deadline is Thursday but to be honest my head is a mess so I could be wrong on that.

Countrygirl88 · 17/08/2021 08:05

We have been made to feel that there is no point in appealing as we won’t win so I guess that’s it for us. What a shame to leave a school after all this time feeling this way and what a shame for the students. They must feel it’s all been a waste of time 😢

LaLaFlottes · 17/08/2021 08:05

@MaddieElla I am so sorry to see your post here. I had noticed you hadn’t been on the other thread but was hoping you just hadn’t had a moment.
This is so unfair for your DD. I hope so much that her appeal is successful- it sounds like she has a strong case. How on earth can you get a B when you’ve never ever had a B before?
Hang in there - I know it must be tough but we’re thinking of you and DD and hoping for a good outcome in the end. Flowers

pistachioicecream · 17/08/2021 10:30

@igelkott2021

I have to say that I would disagree that with CCAABC in assessments that a C could be a reasonable outcome. I'd have thought you'd average them out and it would be a B. I suppose if they came in that order and the C was for the last piece of work you might think it reasonable but with two As there too? I think a B is the reasonable outcome in that instance. Whether the exam board would agree with me...and given all the media flak about grade inflation...it's really rubbish.
thanks @igelkott2021 We were expecting a B too from those results. Still deciding whether to appeal or not. Trying to find out what the exam board actually do at a stage 2 appeal to judge whether there's any chance it could go down to a D at that point if we did appeal!

DS is in the very fortunate position of having still got his firm choice University despite dropping a grade, so wouldn't want to do anything to jeopardise that.

Really feel for those like @MaddieElla's DD who have lost their places. Just terrible. Have everything crossed your appeal is successful - can't see how it won't be with the situation you've described.

I do appreciate the viewpoint that A-levels are a stepping stone and shouldn't matter in the long run so just let it go. But DS feels like he's failed and is struggling to move on at the moment.

vjg13 · 17/08/2021 11:00

@MaddieElla I sincerely hope the grade is increased for your daughter and the process is quick.

Countrygirl88 · 17/08/2021 11:41

@pistachioicecream We are in the same boat, lost our first choice Uni and now gone through clearing and going to a completely different one not even on the radar. Do we just move on, do we appeal?

MaddieElla · 17/08/2021 11:45

I believe the window for appeal is closed now? Midnight yesterday I think.

pistachioicecream · 17/08/2021 12:08

@MaddieElla - that was the deadline for priority appeals if you needed the grade for University entrance this year.

Ours wouldn't be a priority appeal so the deadline is 3rd September.

@Countrygirl88 - sorry to hear about your university position. That must be very stressful. How does your son or daughter feel about their clearing option?

MaddieElla · 17/08/2021 12:17

Ahh, that's right. Apologies.

Andi2020 · 17/08/2021 20:07

@pistachioicecream was it final exam for you when you say not priority
My dd and her bf go As results in Northern Ireland and both where disappointed getting an A/B in test and she got a C and he got a D and was called into a meeting in school told his results where bad and advised not to return for Alevel
He asked how mark was calculated head said he didn't know told him no way was he getting them grades he had absolutely no background for the D grade
Her bf is in bits, he is really good kid got all A in GCSE last year how is any of this fair.
Others in school are been treated same.
Non priority appeal date here is 17th September but they are back at school 31st August and he doesn't even know if he is enrolled now for final year.
Sorry for interrupt thread
His parents are not helping called him a failure and useless. They went into meeting with him but didn't say much.

pistachioicecream · 17/08/2021 21:30

That sounds very stressful @Andi2020. My DS was in year 13 so yes, last exams for him.

I hope your DD and her BF manage to sort something out. That does sound very harsh. Good luck.

Andi2020 · 18/08/2021 00:28

@pistachioicream luckily my dd was not called to a meeting yet anyway so she ok to return.
Hopefully all works out for your ds.
Does anyone know if CCEA do autumn exams this year

Think this might be illegal - in England anyway

Same in Wales, not allowed to kick people out for poor performance.

@Limewine and @singingstones
Thanks so much for this
Do you know where I could find same rules for Northern Ireland

stoneysongs · 19/08/2021 13:33

Here you go @Andi2020, same in NI.

It's from this page, which is info about exclusions from the National Autistic Society. I guess if you need to quote the law you'd have to find it on the govt or education authority website.

MadameMinimes · 19/08/2021 14:15

Whether it’s illegal depends on whether he is at a school or a college. The rules on exclusions apply in sixth forms attached to schools, but not to colleges that only educate children above compulsory school age. Compulsory school age is still 16, despite the requirement to stay in education or training until 18 now. If it’s a school sixth form, you can definitely challenge it.

Andi2020 · 19/08/2021 15:35

@singingstones thanks again
@MadameMinimes thanks. It's hard to know if school or college I the name it has
College but it starts at Y8 so I would think it is a school.
I hope it won't come down to this and they where just trying to give him a reality check.
I told my dd to tell him to go in on day back and say nothing if they don't bring it up.
If you try and irritate them it could make it more awkward.

MadameMinimes · 19/08/2021 16:08

If they start at Year 8 then they are covered by the exclusions guidance. Hopefully you are right and they are just trying to give him a wake up call. You’d be surprised how many schools break the law with impunity on this though.

Andi2020 · 19/08/2021 17:51

@MadameMinimes the annoying thing is they said at the meeting with him and his parents on Monday you MIGHT get back.
There was nothing said like we will let you know or by a date so he just getting really down not knowing.
Things like this really affect people's mental health after the amount of time they where off with lockdown this is terrible way to treat students and their family.
He can't even apply to other college courses as his chosen subject needs Alevel.

Andi2020 · 20/08/2021 19:55

School rang him yesterday said he could do 2 of the 3 A level but would advise him to leave and get a job as 2 A level no good.
I totally disagree with this
Lots of Accountancy courses take 1 Alevel and GCSE.
So annoyed school trying to get lower grade students to quit to keep up league tables rather than protecting their education and mental health

Bryonyshcmyony · 20/08/2021 19:59

I don't think schools get funding for someone doing just 2 a levels
