Hi 👋
I thought it might be nice to have a support thread for us parents? (Can't see one in further Ed yet??)
It's been such a difficult time for our kids - and for us! - but the end is in sight!
Ds will get an e mail at 8.30am (apparently) and can go into college in person if he needs help/advice.
Good luck everyone!

Meant to say Loughborough is his top choice so is it good or bad that there is no clearing? Who knows

StealthRoast · 09/08/2021 22:13

Hi all, late to the party but still in time ( 10 hours and 25 mins to go! ) and this is my first experience of a dc waiting for A level results. He isn’t one bit bothered which is worrying me.

Ds has Aspergers and anxiety and his MH took a right beating during lockdown. He also put on a significant amount of weight. For these reasons and more he has decided to defer his university place as he would have to move to campus and he feels like he’s not ready this year. I have to support his decision as I felt I was pushed into going to university myself in 1996 ( got crap grades, missed out on first choice by a mile and went to the first place that would have me ) and was back home after 5 months with debts that are still impacting me.

He’s predicted BBB and thinks he will get BCC. He “needs” BBC for his first choice university but I’m wondering if he’s acting so relaxed as he knows he’s not going. I don’t know. He said he was much more nervous 2 years ago waiting for his GCSE results.

His sixth form college boast 100% pass rate which is sure to put a bit of pressure on. They aren’t allowed in tomorrow and will receive results at 8.30 on both their college and personal emails.

Sorry that was long. I’m a nervous wreck.

Boulshired · 09/08/2021 22:16

With DD it’s all about her firm at the moment, she’s set her heart on it. She’s more concerned with UCAS than getting to college for results. I wish her college emailed the result. All the online learning she has had to do and they won’t do the result online. Hers is after 9 but it’s a large college and they are doing social distance for collection. It will be a while.

Longtimenewsee · 09/08/2021 22:16

Useful tips @clary. I hope we won’t need them ! But thanks

dollybird · 09/08/2021 22:22

DD has to log in from 8.30 to get her results. She could go into college later in the morning for a 'celebration' event, but she has her driving test! Talk about timing!! She's not going to uni, but it will be good to put some actual grades on her CV. If she gets BCD she'll be happy. She really struggled with learning from home. I just hope tomorrow is good news all round 🤞

Clary Loughborough is my DS's first choice too. He needs distinction, AA and knows he's got a distinction star already, is pretty confident about an A in maths but not so for the A in physics. Hoping the star might offset the B if that's the case. He broke his collarbone badly before covid and had time off again for an op to correct the break in January so has had even more disruption than he would have done. However, he's happy with his insurance choice, although I know he's going to be gutted if he doesn't get into Loughborough as he loved it when DH took him for a visit. So, we know he's going to one or the other and we won't have the added stress of clearing.

clary · 09/08/2021 22:35

Crossing fingers for Loughborough for all Grin

Artdecolover · 09/08/2021 22:37

Loughborough is ds's insurance choice...
It's a great university and good student town/amenities

Iimaginethiswillbefun · 09/08/2021 22:55

Lordy my DS seems to be batting a little lower than everyone else’s. He has to get CCC and I’m a nervous wreck. Still not confident he will get that Confused

whatisthisinhere · 09/08/2021 23:04

My ds needs A star A starA for his firm, and then one grade lower for his insurance. I don't thin' he'll get it, but he seems very confident.

I'm preparing for tears and panic tomorrow. He written out his clearing plan, stored phone numbers on his phone. I'm just hoping he can stay level, he has ASD and MH issues.
I can not sleep. My mind is churning with everything that can go wrong

Nothing wrong with that. Some people are a bit disparaging about any uni that's not Durham or Oxford. Loughborough is a target for ds, then for someone else it's a mere insurance. For another it's a uni that didn't give them an offer. Different strokes for different folks. Is he likely to get CCC?
Artdecolover · 09/08/2021 23:08

All subject dependant too

Iimaginethiswillbefun · 09/08/2021 23:08

I hope so it’s been a rough couple of years for him. He was involved in an accident and lost the sight in one eye. So you know what in the bigger scheme of things it’s not important but he needs a boost.

We are waiting for GCSE results Thursday and everyone is so stressed its unreal.

Good luck to parents A levels and students.

whatisthisinhere · 09/08/2021 23:13

Ds's insurance has no clearing or adjustment places for this year Confused

whatisthisinhere · 09/08/2021 23:13

I need to stop looking it up

Artdecolover · 09/08/2021 23:14

See you probably far too early tomorrow

Oh gosh, I hope he gets his grades. That's a lot he's been through, what an amazing young man you have!
MrsAvocet · 09/08/2021 23:44

Not a lot of sleep going on here, though everyone is in bed.
By way of reassurance (mainly for myself!) my DH is living proof that not getting A level grades isn't the end of the world. To cut a long story short, after a great set of O levels he messed around in 6th form and crashed and burned spectacularly. He resat the year and improved but still didn't quite get what he needed for his preferred course but got in at a less prestigous establishment but on a similar course. It turned out to suit him down to the ground, and included an industrial placement who offered him a job once he graduated. He's now an internationally recognised expert in his field and nobody cares that he failed his A levels and didn't go to Oxbridge or an RG University.
Whatever happens to any of our young people tomorrow it is a beginning, not the end.
Sleep well everyone and good luck tomorrow.

clary · 10/08/2021 00:11

Well said @MrsAvocet, there is always another way. Hope everyone gets what they need. Please update here

Ds went to bed about an hour ago. He asked me to drive him to school for 8.30am . He said " please be ready or I'll have to claw out my eyes" so not as cool as he's making out.

I feel so nervous and churned up He has worked his socks off and really deserves to do well.

ablutiions · 10/08/2021 03:00

I'm awake, reading. stuff. And it's making me more stressed.

A level re-sits will be on full curriculum, even though DFE knows that NO-ONE learned the full bloody curriculum. FFS

We've had no communication from DS school about results day (well parents haven't) . That's a bit poor isn't it?

@whatisthisinhere down- post referred to a script for clearing that their school had shared. Is it shareable on here please? Sounds like it will be very helpful. Grin

I'm kicking myself that we didn't encourage DS to hold off on his trip for a couple of days, but he'd booked it before he told us, so..... just hoping that his GF can help and that his phone doesn't play up. I'm going to try and get him to patch me into clearing calls -or is that too overbearing parenting?

He needs BCC to get his firm, but we have no idea as to whether he will get it. Going from UUU to BCC in 7 months is a huge ask and TBH I'm not at all confident he will be anywhere near what he needs.

So, onwards to tomorrow where we pile onto this thread and blurt out our relieved successes, or panicked 'what the hell do we do now? Questions.

Glad I've got you lot to lean on. Now off to watch some trash telly to try and clear my mind. Sleep ? Ha! Who need it? Confused

Blueskythinking123 · 10/08/2021 04:26

@ablutiions another struggling to sleep. Just want tomorrow morning over now.
