Have all the UK students started now?

My DD has been in Paris 4 weeks, I will see her on October 6th en route for the Eurostar and I can't wait. The house seems very empty especially as her brother tends to spend every other weekend at his girlfriend's house. I guess it is good empty nest training :(

DD's course is incredibly full-on but that's selective French HE for you. She has 33 contact hours. Not much time left for activities but she has signed up for dance and Arabic. I'd have liked her to get involved in university music (she is a pianist, guitarist and singer) but she didn't want to join the choir.

HesMyLobster · 29/09/2018 11:17

So glad to hear you're feeling a bit better Marmite but please take it easy and don't rush things! Very Gentle coffee sounds like a good activity for today Smile

I'm impatient to get going now! Car is loaded and ready but have to wait til after DD2 finishes dance. . .

Good luck to the rest of today's travellers - Kitten I hope you, DD and her belongings made it onto the train safely xx

catslife · 29/09/2018 11:58

I hope this weekends drop-offs, particularly those using public transport work out well.
I think that's all the uni-lot started now.
dd had another job interview this week and hope she is offered something soon as she is getting a bit bored. We went to help at a student welcome event run by our church this week and she enjoyed it so much that she went back to do an extra day!
Is it possible for your dd to join a rowing club that isn't specifically for students marmite. I would imagine that such a club (if available) would welcome new experienced members. Perhaps the students are limited to sessions which aren't popular with other clubs? Pleased to hear you are feeling a bit better BTW.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 29/09/2018 11:58

Good luck to all those travelling today. Especially kitten braving the train.

misti dd has been away for three weeks now and does seem quite settled in spite of various admin mix-ups. I went to see her for a couple of days this week and it was lovely to be with her again. So enjoy your visit in a couple of weeks.

marmite glad to hear things are beginning to improve.

LoniceraJaponica · 29/09/2018 12:03

Good luck to your DD catslife.
DD has a job offer and an interview for something else next week. Currently at Manchester open day. DD didn't like Manchester for medicine last year, but really liked it for biomed this year. The course is very competitive to get into - 5000 applicants for about 630 places. They interview as well.

HesMyLobster · 29/09/2018 12:42

Lonicera congratulations to your DD on the job offer that's brilliant news!
Fab that she's found universities/courses that she likes too.
Cats everything crossed that the right thing comes along for your DD soon too.

LoniceraJaponica · 29/09/2018 12:44

Thank you Lobster

Downeyhouse · 29/09/2018 13:12

Congrats to your daughter Lonicera.

I went to Manchester so I have a soft spot for it :) I am glad she liked it better this time.

PandaG · 29/09/2018 14:48

Dropped him, unpacked his room, did something I haven't done for years (made his bed up - a job I delegated to the kids as soon as I could), bought a couple of forgotten essentials in town, said goodbye and left. Teared up when DH and I got practically squashed by long, strong, manly hugs, but didn't howl in front of him. Have a feeling that will be tonight when I see his empty room. Sad.

Hope you are getting on ok Kitten and Lobster.

Well done on job offer Lonicera's dd.

Yes, I did finish bunny's scarf as well as ds's. :)

TheThirdOfHerName · 29/09/2018 15:45

Lonerica well done to your DD on the job offer

Bakeandyarn · 29/09/2018 15:55

We must be the last! DS goes on Monday! I’ll be at work and we aren’t allowed any time off (not even allowed to ask) so DH will be taking, everything is packed and ready to go, except clothes which is a job for tomorrow. He’s definitely ready having seen all his friends off in the last few weeks.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 29/09/2018 15:59

lonerica well done to your dd and glad the open day is going well.

I haven't really felt very tearful since dd went but doing the harvest box today which was something we always did together has set me off.

ShanghaiDiva · 29/09/2018 16:04

Lonicera
Great news re job offer!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/09/2018 17:25

I'll update and then catch up with everyone's news :)

We managed to get there nice and early which worked well before things got busy.

Dd has a lovely room, really spacious and loads of storage. The gyp (kitchen) is very very small but she managed to nab the best cupboard.

We got her unpacked, went and bought her some food bits and then went for a bite to eat and an explore.

She managed to find the post room and some post. At that point it felt like starting a new video game, the sort where you get quests and sub-missions to complete Grin

Ie. Objective:find post room and receive letter from bursars office. Completed.
New objective:pay college bill
Optional mission: sign up for paid research projects Grin

Anyway, she has eleventy billion bits of paperwork now to fill out.

At the end we went to a speech by someone important who gave an appropriate welcome students, don't worry parents talk.

Quick hug goodbye and I left her to it. Now I'm on the world's slowest train back to London and desperate for a non existant loo.

Top tip. If you have the misfortune to end up on the xx:56 train to Kings Cross, if you change at Hitchin you just have time to run to thr other platform and back for the loo before getting on a train that gets in five mins earlier than the original train.

Lonicera well done to your dd :) good things come to those who wait.

Well done Panda. You did it.

I hope the drive went well Lobster.

I didn't have time to buy a little drink. Poor me.

Aww NoHaudin :( you know, one day thanks to the way you've raised your dd there will be two harvest festival boxes where there is now one.

That is such a good description.

This week, DS1 has managed to unlock the following achievements/rewards:

  • Find supermarket & buy groceries.
  • Register with GP.
  • Attend every induction lecture.
  • Meet personal tutor.
  • Make friends with flatmates.
  • Stay up all night at least once.
  • Get free pizza at Freshers' fair.
  • Attend three Freshers' nights out, one of which includes fancy dress and/or face paint.

Next week, I'd like him to aim for:

  • Make at least one friend who is on the same course.
  • Join a club / society.
  • Use the laundry card to do a load of laundry.
OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/09/2018 17:52

Your ds has earned loads of trophies Third Shock

UrsulaPandress · 29/09/2018 17:57

Oh damn. Your two harvest boxes has brought on a tear!

spababe · 29/09/2018 18:06

Anyone else had the shock of the empty room at home looking like you've been burgled and the culprits have taken all the good stuff?? It's taken me all week to get it sorted out and cleaned!

NoHaudinMaWheest · 29/09/2018 18:09

Thanks kitten.
Glad it went well for you and dd.
Shame about the G&T. You can enjoy one in the comfort of your own home now though.

DD has bought a tin of soup for her harvest contribution tomorrow. Though she was worried that the new medication she is on says no alcohol and could she still have communion wine. Smile

PandaG · 29/09/2018 18:27

Love the video game analogy!

Hoping DS achieves the register with gp, meet tutor and director of studies, and matriculate awards in the next few days!!
Hope journey home not too long and slow Kitten, glad you could get to a loo!

Knittinganewme · 29/09/2018 18:35

DS slept in until lunchtime on one day and had an afternoon nap on another. You do whatever you want love - it's nothing to do with me.

OYBBK I spent 30p for a pee on a station platform this week and it was worth every penny. I was so desperate that I would have paid £3 for five minutes use of the facilities.

I had a throwback to my own student days yesterday, drinking wine from mugs. Our mugs matched and weren't chipped so it wasn't quite authentic (Travelodge had no tooth glasses)

TheThirdOfHerName · 29/09/2018 18:38

I was so tickled by this idea that I put together a few award badges for DS1 and WhatsApped them to him. He loves them!
