You know the drill though, that one needs to be used up first lowers glasses to give (behave Chocolate!)

Some of us already have btech results, some have unconditionals, but it's a nervous time for most. Lots of Wine Gin Flowers

HesMyLobster that's lovely

UrsulaPandress · 19/08/2018 22:45

I've never been to a baby shower or a hen night.

Party anyone?

FantasyAndHope · 19/08/2018 22:52

lobster
How wonderful and exciting
third
At least he’s moving in the right direction best wishes to you

Downeyhouse · 20/08/2018 00:36

Ah lobster I had a lump in my throat reading about your shower Smile

ShanghaiDiva · 20/08/2018 00:39

Lobster - how lovely - you have some fabulous friends.

HesMyLobster · 20/08/2018 06:32

Oh gosh. Just waved DD off on the train to London. She's going for a whole week for work experience - it's a fantastic opportunity for her, but feeling a bit wet around the eyes right now!

2gorgeousboys · 20/08/2018 06:45

What lovely friends Lobster, sounds like a perfect afternoon.

I can sympathise with you on the work experience Last year DS spent a week in Bristol for his (we are in North Yorkshire!) and it was so hard dropping him off and driving away that Monday morning. He had the best time and learnt so much but I shed a tear or two. I hope she has an amazing experience.

Petalflowers · 20/08/2018 07:48

Lobster - how lovely.

How is Little Lobsters foot after her recent injury?

HesMyLobster · 20/08/2018 07:49

I think it's just rubbish timing - after Thursday and the realisation that she's actually leaving soon, every instinct is to pull her close until she goes, so it feels wrong to have her going away right now.
Somehow seeing her dressed in her new smart office clothes just made her look younger too - it felt like waving a 12 year old off for a week alone in the city Sad

At least I have the cutest kitten in the world to keep my mind off it!
He mostly likes to be worn - today he thinks he's a scarf (yesterday he was a hat!) Grin

HesMyLobster · 20/08/2018 07:53

Her ankle is a lot better thankyou petal. She's been refusing to use crutches since Saturday and insisting she's fine without.Hmm
She definitely won't be wearing the new specially purchased heels this week though!

UrsulaPandress · 20/08/2018 08:04

Hope the streets of London don't cause her too much pain. I'm sure they are harder than anywhere else.

Knittinganewme · 20/08/2018 08:15

Lobster what a lovely surprise for you, a baby shower where the baby gets gin if they want it.

GnomeDePlume · 20/08/2018 08:15

The 'uni shower' sounded lovely and really thoughtful ^Lobster*. I hope your DD enjoys the work experience. A great practice run for uni as well.

derekthe1adyhamster · 20/08/2018 08:56

A uni shower! How fabulous.
So hands up who else has a child having a gap year? I'm trying not to micro manage everything he needs to do. I'm failing and can tell DS is getting irritated with me. Luckily I'm back to work after the summer holidays next week!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/08/2018 09:30

Good luck to your dd this week Lobster. It will be a really good practice run for her. I know what you mean though about wanting to spend as much time as you can with her.

Loniceras dd is derek.

DD opted for the HSBC account over Santander, because Amazon vouchers had more appeal than a student railcard. She'll be a long way away, and will most likely either fly home, or we'll pick her up in the car if she needs to bring more stuff back than she can carry.

However, I've just discovered that you can get a student rail card for £15 of Tesco club card vouchers. I'm sitting on a small fortunes worth of vouchers by accident (rarely shop at Tesco, but do use them for petrol) and easily have enough vouchers to get one. What a nice surprise! She has realised that she can visit her grandparents by train easily from her uni city, and even possibly school friends in the cities. Hurrah for a nice surprise! I'm going to have a look now and see if there is anything else useful I can do with those vouchers!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/08/2018 10:14

dd is going for Santander because of the interest rate -3% on balances up to 2k. I'm hoping that they do a student credit card because at some point it's important to start building up a good credit score.

When choosing a bank, remind them to look at the terms once they graduate. DS1 sensibly pointed out that a massive free overdraft is great, but not so good when they start charging the moment you finish university.

HardwickWhite · 20/08/2018 11:15

I'm sure they must OYBBK. Signing up for one was part of the HSBC account opening process, and she got an additional £20 for doing that. I suggested she set a sensible limit, but use it, and clear it monthly as we do ours. Hopefully it will help her manage her spending (likely to be minimal, as she is obsessively frugal) and build some credit history.

She also selected a smaller overdraft than they initially suggested, because we remember how easy it is to allow that to run away with itself. I remember though in the olden days having to get an appointment with the bank manager to ask for one! Ah the blissful days of the student grant.

UrsulaPandress · 20/08/2018 11:46

Dds accommodation has come through. Praise the Lord it is one of her choices.

Just done a rough sum and I should save at least £5,000 per year on the horse do that should go some way to meeting her accommodation costs.

LoniceraJaponica · 20/08/2018 11:59

I emailed school to get the marks for DD's results, and discovered that she was 4 marks off an A* for one subject. Is it worth a remark?

UrsulaPandress · 20/08/2018 12:09

DD was 2 marks off an A* in one subject but we are not bothering

NoHaudinMaWheest · 20/08/2018 12:22

Dd was 3 marks off a A (2 in one paper,1 in the other) in AS History. We sent for a remark with the encouragement of the teacher. It was expensive and it didn't move at all.
Remarks are now just a check that criteria have been applied correctly so they are less likely to change than under the old system.
Unless it is likely to be really important for a university place, I am not sure it is worth it.

LoniceraJaponica · 20/08/2018 12:32

I am an idiot. It was 14 marks Blush

Hoveringhobbit · 20/08/2018 13:17

Just became randomly tearful whilst buying a sandwich. Odd because he can be a right little so and so at times and he's not my first one to leave and I will still have DS2 at home.

Sent him a text saying that I would miss him. Nothing back - he's probably still asleep.....
