You know the drill though, that one needs to be used up first lowers glasses to give (behave Chocolate!)

Some of us already have btech results, some have unconditionals, but it's a nervous time for most. Lots of Wine Gin Flowers

The HSBC conversion to a student bank account was straightforward enough (says DS). Amazon voucher to follow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/08/2018 16:11

Do they need to actually confirm their place? I saw they need to, but dd can't see how?

Bekabeech that's an amazing achievement after your DD's really tough circumstances - congratulations to her!

Voilets welcome & congratulations to DD too.

TheThirdOfHerName · 17/08/2018 16:49

I'm not sure how they confirm the place. UCAS haven't made that obvious.

DS1 received an email explaining that he should register online between 28 Aug and 10 Sept (including uploading a photo). Then when he arrives he shows his passport / birth certificate to verify his identity.

Petalflowers · 17/08/2018 16:52

Whoever mentioned about football duvet covers a couple of pages back (just binged-read this thread) made me chuckle. My 16 year has been saying the same!

argumentativefeminist · 17/08/2018 16:58

I think it's automatically confirmed when they get the grades unless they went through Clearing and then I think there's a process online to reject and accept your offers similarly to the first time round. On their track it should say the course and then confirmed? That's the bit everyone normally shares across social media! And then in about a week they'll get an online confirmation letter in track with some more details, then most likely an online registration from uni. But it was a few years ago I did this and I had an unconditional so this is just what I remember/have had a quick look on UCAS question pages, so ignore me if you've heard otherwise!

LIZS · 17/08/2018 16:59

Admiral will also extend cover to student accommodation as long as the room door has a lock on. However we discovered this week that Endsleigh do not cover gadgets over 3 years old (ds needed separate insurance for living out).

voilets · 17/08/2018 17:37

OYYBK - uni has a confirmation letter but I don't think you need to do anything on Track

PostNotInHaste · 17/08/2018 18:53

DD has been to see a flat, they have until 10am tomorrow to decide. It’s being renovated so areas outside a building site and I think they are dubious that it will be done in time plus the Letting Agents have crap reviews. Also has parking which has been a big issue for her boyfriend.

The boyfriend very dubious about the area though, says he can see himself living in the flat but not sure about the area. I’m biting my tongue as spent 2 very happy years living a few minutes walk away but know there are cultural differences at play here. I’m keeping quiet as if it all goes pear shaped need to have been their decision but a big part of me wants them to take it so one thing sorted. Welcome pack with list of Freshers events, T shirt and neon paint arrived here for her today.

TheThirdOfHerName · 17/08/2018 19:18

What is the neon paint for?

TheThirdOfHerName · 17/08/2018 19:23

DS1 has been added to a group chat for his course. He said that most of the discussion seems to revolve around whether or not to buy an all-inclusive wristband for Fresher's week (£57 includes entry to all events).

The cynical side of me wonders if these are actually events organised by the Student Union or just money-making schemes run by private events organisers.

On Facebook, there are at least five groups for Freshers for that university. They can't all be official groups.

MarchingFrogs · 17/08/2018 19:46

Going back three years, when DS1 applied to convert his 'under 19' bank account to a student one, Lloyds wanted to see his actual confirmation letter (AS12 - comes in different versions according to whether you get in to your firm, insurance, alternative course offered etc). However, looking just now on the UCAS site at the 'managing money' section, some banks accept UCAS status codes as an alternative to the physical letter.

PostNotInHaste · 17/08/2018 19:49

Think neon paint for a UV paint party in Freshers week. I’m guessing it links in with the t shirt but who knows !

FantasyAndHope · 17/08/2018 19:59

There’s loads of Facebook groups for dds uni!
Dd has just informed me a group she’s in for uni advice a woman has posted about a young boy who has sadly committed suicide due to not getting the results he wanted.
Such sad news at such a young age and shows the amount of pressure young people are under to perform.

Bekabeech · 17/08/2018 20:10

Thanks everyone!
We even mentioned the U word briefly yesterday.
And College have said she can sit her exams there next year if she wants/feels up to it.

Good luck with all your moves, and hope it all goes smoothly now.

voilets · 17/08/2018 20:30

Fantasyandhope - that story has really made me shudder - how terribly sad and just so terrible how much pressure some young people feel. I need reminding just what a big deal this post 18 transition is to keep my DD close. Sad

NoHaudinMaWheest · 17/08/2018 21:20

Beka big congratulations to your dd. It is a huge achievement in the circumstances. Wishing better health for her this year.

argumentativefeminist · 17/08/2018 21:21

I would recommend official SU freshers wristbands only - there will be events in the city but I wouldn't recommend getting a whole wristband package for these as a lot of them are shit to be honest. For neon paint parties - take a change of clothes if you're relying on getting a taxi or bus home!

FlappyFeet · 17/08/2018 22:16

I've just read about the poor lad who killed him self yesterday after his results, on the Facebook uni group.

What an absolute tragedy. There are just no words really.

Bouledeneige · 17/08/2018 22:29

Thats so sad!

Interesting news tonight. DD's school are requesting a re-mark of the whole Art A level as they think its been under graded. We have to give permission and take her work back (her final project was requested in by Edexcel to illustrate their course guide so we have to get that back too). DD who got a grade lower than predicted is unsettled.... Trying not to raise her hopes as it could take a while.

MrSlant · 17/08/2018 22:50

I'd love to get DS' ICT re-graded as it was a lot lower than expected, C instead of a possible A but he's not bothered because 'I know I can do it and I can prove to people I know how so it doesn't really matter'. I hope for the future he's right! His school use his AS work as their teaching materials so I don't think we are being delusional. As I can't get hold of his paperwork to see how close he was to an actual B at least I'll never know (think he's using it for a paper plane or something, totally unbothered anyway, oh to be so chilled). I am actually gutted for him that he didn't do as well as he'd hoped but as things have moved on I'll have to be lead by him I guess. Good job he didn't apply for computing courses like his teacher wanted anyway!

Spun out at the moment as ex-h didn't think DS had to pay (get a loan) for his tuition anyway, how can you be so disengaged from your child's future? Just trying to get him to help DS financially as I don't think that had crossed his mind. How foolish I was to think after results we would get a break from worrying Grin.

Bouledeneige · 17/08/2018 23:00

Oh MrSlant thats a shame - it sounds like he deserves a re-mark. I would not have thought of going for a re-mark and there's no guarantee it will improve her mark (a B). But one star student failed to get into his architecture degree so it did make a real difference to some.

I'm sorry about exH - thats an engaged and thoughtful Dad isnt it? Poor you.

derekthe1adyhamster · 17/08/2018 23:02

bouledeneige that's interesting to hear. The school I work at had lower than expected art results. They are very results driven and often get exams remarked. I wonder if it's the same school! Shock

Nettleskeins · 17/08/2018 23:12

|I've made a Remark thread in Higher Ed. Not many responses, so if anyone has any thoughts or experience, I would love to hear them..

boule I was talking to someone whose child had experienced similar not in Art but another arty subject, whole cohort was much lower than predicted, and in ds2's school (but he is only at Gsce so far) they had a problem with another creative subject not getting higher than B's across the board, despite great reputation of the department and expectation of some A*s at least. In the second case, the school did not manage to persuade the board, some candidates were very disadvantaged, especially those who were on the lower grades using the creative as a subsidiary A level (ie expecting B's and getting Ds)

MrSlant · 17/08/2018 23:18

boule he was just happy that he'd worked out he could lower his CSA payments to me. Utterly charming but sometimes you need a reminder why you divorced them in the first place Grin.
