You know the drill though, that one needs to be used up first lowers glasses to give (behave Chocolate!)

Some of us already have btech results, some have unconditionals, but it's a nervous time for most. Lots of Wine Gin Flowers

Shanghai well done too for your DS. Is he looking forward to Warwick and is it something Maths related for him also? I hope it's not too long till we find out about accommodation, though I've heard that Warwick might take a bit longer than some places with this.

LoniceraJaponica · 17/08/2018 11:53

I am so happy for all of you whose DC got what they wanted/needed. I think I might bow out of this thread as DD has definitely decided to take a gap year.

We will spend the afternoon emailing student finance, the university she has a confirmed offer on and the accommodation people to let them know she won't be going there.

I feel kind of sad that she won't be experiencing student life until next year, but glad that she is sensible enough to not rush into a degree she was only half hearted about doing in the first place. She didn't want to look through clearing/adjustment because she didn't want to end up in "shit accommodation" as she put it, or at a university she has never visited.

Her boyfriend didn't meet his offer and has ended up somewhere he hadn't looked up and the only accommodation left is the dregs that no-one else wants.

I think I will start a gap year thread if there isn't one.

Good luck to everyone's DC

DaisyBlameless · 17/08/2018 11:59

LePetit*

Lafrowda is the one everyone wants, right in the middle of campus and known as a very social hall. I'm sure he'll love it.

Does he play rugby? Pre season has already started. Mine went back a couple of weeks ago. He's very happy there. Well done to your DS.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/08/2018 11:59

You are kidding Third? dd made an appointment with Santander next week specifically to sort out an account as when she tried to create a current account with them online it got lost in the system and we couldn't sort it out.

Lonicera, we will miss you :( It's sad to see our longstanding group fragment. Your dd is being so mature in making this decision, it's so much better than just going off this year for the sake of it.

Loni
Pop back we will all miss you

kitten
Third isn’t kidding dd did the same as you unless they currently bank with Santander it has to be done online or at the bank at the uni if they have a Santander

raspberryrippleicecream · 17/08/2018 13:04

Two years ago DS1 couldn't open a back account with Santander because they had no appointments left and it couldn't be done on line. Go figure!

Thank you for all the positive messages of support from everyone.

DD is still very sad and wistful about her results this morning.

Lonicera you maybe didn't mean it as such but as DD is not yet even able to apply for accommodation for her Clearing offer, it has not heled me to feel positive about where she might end up.

TheThirdOfHerName · 17/08/2018 13:08

The lady at Santander decided to honour the appointment, so spent the time going through the online application process and T&Cs with DS1, basically reading out what was on the screen. He then came home and applied online.

Knittinganewme · 17/08/2018 13:47

DS is going with HSBC for the Amazon voucher. He's set off to his appointment with a range of id so hopefully will come back with it all done.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/08/2018 14:06

dd wants to move her current account from one bank (which are dropping their interest rate) to santander. Apparently that has to be done in person. Appointment isn't until next week. So we shall see what happens then! She didn't dare make an appointment for today in case she didn't know where she was going yet.

Raspberry Flowers for both you and your dd. I feel really sad for her. Tell her that I was one of those students. Although my original university did take me after an emergecncy meeting with the careers person at schools and a phonecall, I got much worse results that anyone expected. It did really sting, but when I got to university I actually found that I wasn't the crap student I thought I was, that I was just as good as the others who had achieved their grades. It doesn't change who she is.
Give her a hug from me.

Lonicera. that will be a real shame to say goodbye to you on this thread, but I totally get you wanting to join/start a gap year thread for support - I'm sure there are plenty DC taking that path. With my DD doing DA now for sure, I don't know where I fit in as we have one foot in the degree route still for 4 years & the other foot in the job camp Confused & not much at all being posted on DA route - I feel like a bit of a nomad right now! Grin

Bekabeech · 17/08/2018 14:21

Just thought I'd pop back with my DDs amazing result.
She has an A'level!
For those who don't remember she had MH issues. Basically sat one paper in one subject before half term, then had a breakdown - forced herself to sit one paper in another subject whilst crying for most of it. And then gave up. Sitting no more exams. Her College applied for special consideration , and somehow in one subject she has an A'level (not the AS we expected) grade B.
We are so pleased and proud. (But most other people wouldn't understand why.)

Nettleskeins · 17/08/2018 14:22

Raspberry most of the unis in Clearing are unis that are other people's first choices anyway, not the ones that no-one wants, and as for the accommodation, I haven't heard that, except for places like Bristol which are very oversubscribed in the first place. My brother had a confirmed place at Bristol (ie not through Clearing) and ended up in a pyschiatric hospital (converted to student accommodation, and no I am not being ironic) on a ward with LOCKERS. It is incredibly disappointing to get a C in something you wanted an A for, is she is going for the remark, just in case?
But once she is in uni, that C won't be of consequence anymore. Because it is not a true reflection of her talents/skills. (whereas my son's C in English is a true reflection, and he is deeply relieved to have it and not a D or an EBlush)

Nettleskeins · 17/08/2018 14:25

we are all exhausted, but I am glad to say that ds1 has completely perked up since getting the confirmation that he is indeed going to uni, and isn't being locked up by his controlling parents to do retakes! And the grade 8 distinction has done wonders for his morale.
In fact what has really done wonders for his morale is that he was forced to get up at 8am yesterday and his time clock has restored itself to normal. He is tidying his room Shock He is going back to Ireland tomorrow, thank God he has made a decision to DO something.
MrSlant I am loving the walking boots.

Nettleskeins · 17/08/2018 14:31

Beka I can understand why! A B is very good. You learn so much from doing an A level don't you, whatever the grade, but the grade is the icing, and the process of sitting the exams teaches you how much you really know of what is a vast range of knowledge. Smile

I'm now trying to help ds2 with his Drama A level preparation. Incredibly timeconsuming as he needs me to read parts with him and generally stop him combusting. today we have been considering a mashup of Chekhov, Antigone and Rattigan. Confused and writing about mist for his review. People keep coming in and screaming about various items of laundry or saucepans that have not been washed up or burnt at bottom, and I just want everyone to go away!!!!

Bekabeech i’m New to the thread but I think that’s amazing, how fantastic for her and good luck to her for what comes next. We’ve not had a smooth ride with DD and I still can’t quite believe she seems to be back on track.

DD applied for the HSBC account online yesterday. They asked if she wanted a credit card and her instant reaction was no. Rightly or wrongly DH and I suggested she applies for it and were explaining there are some situations where they can be handy due to the extra protection. There was an option to have the full balance collected by direct debit so she’s ticked that.

Not sure the flat hunting is going particularly well as her partner needs a job first really so I think they are looking at further temporary accommodation. Am trying to be calm about it but DH had a couple of sleepless nights worrying about them. And i’ve just realised we forgot to sort insurance with everything else going on.

voilets · 17/08/2018 14:36

Hope it's okay to join the thread at this late stage.

I've been hovering and enjoying reading about successes in gaining jobs, apprenticeships, degree apprenticeships, uni places: firm and insurance places and clearing successes. Your DC are so lucky to have parental back up.

My DD has her uni place and we have been filling forms in all morning - or she has with me on hand to help when needed.
Interested in Santander as DD has an account with them and we hoped to convert it to a student account with rail fares reduction card on offer. Will have to look into it a bit more.

Phew ! Waiting is over ! Smile

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 17/08/2018 14:38

Frustratingly DS2 can't convert to a student account with NatWest becsuse he's only doing a 1 year course initially. He has to pass the HNC to move on to the HND. I think he might have to reapply through UCAS again next year. Sigh. Another bloody PS for his current college.

MrSlant · 17/08/2018 14:47

Bekabeech that is fantastic news, well done to DD and all of you, she was very brave sitting the exams she managed, I hope this really helps how she feels in herself. Mental health issues are so miserable Flowers.

MrSlant · 17/08/2018 14:50

Nettles grade 8 distinction Shock that's absolutely amazing, no wonder it's perked him up!

TheThirdOfHerName · 17/08/2018 14:52

Bekabeech that's great news and hopefully good for her confidence.

LoniceraJaponica · 17/08/2018 15:15

raspberryrippleicecream I’m sorry it came across as that. I was merely quoting what DD and her boyfriend said.

That’s fab news Bekabeech. Well done to your DD.

ShanghaiDiva · 17/08/2018 15:30

Lily
My ds will study accounting and finance.
Looking forward to going as he took the IB and his exams finished mid May so is now really bored.

PostNotInHaste · 17/08/2018 15:39

In case it helps anyone we have House insurance with Legal and General. Rang to check if DD’s new laptop covered outside Home which it wasn’t so 1k unspecified effects has been added which hasn’t cost extra, Also under policy terms students covered at University for up to 5k for their personal possessions.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/08/2018 16:04

Bekabeech that's awesome!

we'd best check about insurance for dds laptop. I'm about to have a nice little nap I hope.
