Not the end of the threads, just this chapter of life. We'll keep going, don't worry!

However! Not to be used until this one is done

I recognise that rather unstructured feeling. DD1 is home and now seriously looking into PhDs. DD2 was at prom last night. A good time was had but I think they're all starting to feel a bit flat.

Knittinganewme · 30/06/2018 21:22

We're there for you Downey, last in to the waiting room and first out. Don't bag all the good bedding will you? This is my pet peeve, I won't know which of three bed sizes is the right one until after DS gets his accommodation confirmed. I am not exactly a fast weaver and I'd like to know what width blanket I'm aiming for before I start.

TheThirdOfHerName · 30/06/2018 21:59

DowneyHouse the end is in sight!

GnomeDePlume · 30/06/2018 23:57

Knittinganewme you have reminded me of when DD1 started at university and we discovered that her accommodation at extra long beds.

TheThirdOfHerName · 01/07/2018 00:08

Knitting you need to design a modular blanket, then you can add or remove sections in the second/third year to fit each bed size.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/07/2018 08:17

Nearly there Downey!

Knittinganewme · 01/07/2018 08:46

Do you know - I hadn't even considered that a blanket would be going on more than one bed over its lifetime.

I'll think about it some more when I come back off holiday because I have enough to think about just now. This online stuff is all very well but back in the olden days you used to get a paper ticket and actual luggage labels and I knew what I was doing with that.

Nettleskeins · 01/07/2018 10:43

ds came back from his Prom at some time in the middle of the night. 4am? Anyway we didn't hear him. And have yet to hear whether he actually went. He may have bailed out and gone to the cinema by himself for all we know...

knitting very good luck with the holiday.

Knittinganewme · 01/07/2018 10:48

and another thing. I know a lot has changed since I was at uni, open days rather than interviews, parents in droves, ensuite everything, so maybe this is something else that has shifted over the years. When I was there my parents filled the car at the beginning of term, drove me there, dumped my stuff and drove home again. Given the number of cars I see around here at the start of term that are rammed to the roof with duvets I thought that was still the case. Am I out of step with current thinking?

(My eyebrows shot into my hairline when someone casually mentioned about her son going back at the beginning of term. He drives 3.5 hours to uni, unloads the car, drives back to the family home and then gets on the train to uni the next day. I know the MN way is to have them doing their own laundry from nursery and they are independent adults but why make two trips when you could do it with one and a second driver?)

HesMyLobster · 01/07/2018 11:36

We definitely plan to drive DD with a car full of stuff, I can't imagine leaving her to do it alone.
Maybe by her 4th year though . . ! Grin

HesMyLobster · 01/07/2018 11:43

Downey we'll be here waiting tomorrow with a bottle of bubbly for you! (And another in the fridge ready for your DS's results!)

I've just realised it's only 2 weeks until we go on holiday - I must start getting organised!

We have DD's end of year musical theatre production next weekend to get through first though, so the house is covered in sequins, feathers and leotards with nightly rehearsals for the next weekBlush
Her last one ever, after 16 years of dance and drama - that really is going to feel like an end of an era moment Sad

Nettleskeins · 01/07/2018 12:18

I won't be driving ds to uni (if he goes, still an if Hmm)
cos I don't drive further than 4 miles radius from my house.
And dh doesn't drive either.
There is a convenient bus however that drops him at the uni gates from a local stop. He doesn't really have to transport anything, that cannot be contained in a large suitcase or two. Duvet he will buy there. I can hang around and do some grocery shopping there if necessary.
It is a condition of ds's accommodation that you have no car. So at least it is not going to be the case that anyone else has one.
knitting I think I quite like the idea of someone dropping their own stuff off without parental interference and then coming home again, for a last cosy supper and getting on train without luggage. Feels quite freeing. Luggage is after all the most stressful part of travelling.

I rather like the idea of ds coming back home to fetch things he has forgotten too. Like a mere commute rather than a big scary adventure ,to leave home.

familiar travel phobia is setting in today, I am travelling tomorrow for a two week visit. I feel dreadful, sick scared the works, but will have to tough it out. Nice place when I get there. If kids don't fight.

GnomeDePlume · 01/07/2018 13:58

I think we should have a finishing line and all cross it together.

Took DD1 up in her first year with all her worldly goods in one medium sized car. In the intervening years she seems to have morphed into Imelda Marcos with a Boots makeup concession. We collected her in two cars, one of which was a large Land Rover.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 01/07/2018 14:13

Neither dh nor I drive (medical reasons in both cases) so dd will have to go by train.
We plan to buy bulky stuff like duvets when we get there and hope that Granny will be able to accommodate it over the summer holidays between years.
The main headache is how to get two wheelchairs (manual and powered) up there on the train.

GnomeDePlume · 01/07/2018 14:35

NoHaudin would a courier service work rather than train or do both need to be available immediately?

Nettleskeins · 01/07/2018 15:24

Prom was fun apparently. No food, lots of dancing. He seems quite surprised he enjoyed it. First party of people entirely his own age. Self propelling there and back despite alcohol. He is in a good mood. What a relief.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/07/2018 16:04

We are off on our hols so I might be quite sporadic in posting :)

I hate the travelling bit too.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 01/07/2018 16:50

kitten enjoy it once you get there.
nettle glad the prom went well.

gnome We could look at couriers, thanks. We could have one delivered to my Mum's I suppose as she doesn't actually use the manual much at home but expects to need it more at university.

UrsulaPandress · 01/07/2018 17:06

Have a lovely holiday OYBBK

raspberryrippleicecream · 01/07/2018 17:29

DH picked DS up from his second year yesterday. We actually brought some stuff back a couple of weeks ago when we stopped in for a cup of tea (he is very handily placed when passing). He still needs to collect the rest next weekend when he goes back down for an event. He was a lot better this year at remembering to wind down food supplies

When we took him for first year it all went in the one car like (Gnome's DD).

DS1's uni has extra long beds too, very hard to find bed linen for but very good for 6'6" DS1.

Last year he and his girlfriends drove a load of stuff down earlier in September and settled in, then we took him down for term start and to see his house.

The problem now is storing it all summer.

catslife · 01/07/2018 18:08

Signing back in after trip up north to dog friendly country cottage. Good weather and able to sit outside for meals - unusual for up there. The beach was cold though - approx 15 degrees due to sea fret.
Saw MIL and a few other relatives so not really a holiday as such.

GnomeDePlume · 01/07/2018 18:15

@NoHaudinMaWheest I had a look in my area at couriers and a journey of 75 miles could cost from £41 to £75 depending on how big a window of time could be given for collection. £41 was for a 3 day window.

Downeyhouse · 01/07/2018 18:28

Hope everyone has had a great weekend.

Well it is finally the last night of revision here.

Feels a little like end of an era and I find myself having the odd sniff!!

Did not expect to feel emotional thought I would only be Relived.

We have a crazy wonderful week ahead last exam, results, graduation ceremony and ball. But I suspect it is going to be a roller coaster.

Grandparents arrive mid week so am busy preparing for that.

June 2018 will go down for me as the longest month in History. Has been hot here all month and the revision has been relentless.

Am stocking the car with glasses and wine. Ds finishes at 10:55 am UK time. Should he with (due to my hastily constructed time machine) by 10:56!

To those Travelling on holiday - stay safe and have fun.

LoniceraJaponica · 01/07/2018 19:06

Loads and loads of good luck to your DS for tomorrow Downeyhouse.

DD went to a party last night and decided to sleep over so I had to take some stuff for her. She has an invitation to an after prom party now, so needs to pitch a tent on Tuesday morning.

Downeyhouse · 01/07/2018 19:19

Thank you Lonicera.
