Not usually one to cook but the ILs are coming over in a couple days. Bought some veal to put in the slow cooker.
Are you supposed to wash pre cut meat? Or has it been done in the factory? I know you're meant to wash chicken and pork when it's still got the skin on but I'm not sure about veal. DH doesn't know either Confused

You're NOT supposed to wash any meat, particularly not chicken!! Where did you get this advice?

kimbear87 · 05/10/2024 17:57

chicken has really bad bacteria though. I don't want salmonella.

I don't wash meat. You really don't need to wash it

Tarantella6 · 05/10/2024 17:58

I think if you wash a chicken with salmonella you just spray salmonella all over your kitchen 😅

AppleKatie · 05/10/2024 17:59

You know what kills the bacteria on meat OP?

The oven.

stop washing meat it is not recommended

GrumpyPanda · 05/10/2024 17:59

I wash if its been sealed in plastic but in any case make sure to dry it very well and sear it on high for flavour before it goes in the slow cooker.

You're most emphatically NOT supposed to wash chicken because of the risk of spreading pathogens- just pat it dry.

I like to be careful especially when we have guests. If it's for the dog I don't bother.

It used to be common advice & lots of people still do, it's not necessary & can lead to the spreading of germs.

Well you really don't need to.

TheNinthLock · 05/10/2024 18:01

But washing chicken is the opposite of being careful!
Cooking chicken kills bacteria. Washing simply splashes chickeny water over your sink area….

Bigearringsbigsmile · 05/10/2024 18:01

Don't wash meat!! All it does is spread germs around!
Cook it- that will the getms!

@kimbear87

rinsing a chicken just spreads it around, cooking it properly will kill it off.

It still kills bacteria!

Do you wash mince as well?

not usually because I think it's pre washed

Meat doesn't need washing!

Bacteria are killed by cooking it.

If you wash it, all you do is spray live bacteria round your kitchen.

kimbear87 · 05/10/2024 18:06

My grandparents always the chicken and they were farmers. I don't trust the supermarkets. Especially the budget ones.

Don’t wash meat, op. It’s more likely to cause food poisoning than prevent it.

Yes so don’t wash it

Alicana · 05/10/2024 18:10

You can’t wash off salmonella, unless you are using bleach!! You have more chance of compromising your guests through washing than not washing.

TeeBee · 05/10/2024 18:11

I'm a microbiologist. Stop washing your bloody meat! Whatever bacteria is on the surface (salmonella/campylobacter) will be killed in the cooking process (yes, slow cookers too). All washing does is spray the bacteria around your prep area as the water bounces off the meat. Washing meat is far more dangerous than not washing it.

LemonyCoughSyrup · 05/10/2024 18:11

I worked in a kitchen years ago and have a food safety certificate

the advice in the UK is to NOT wash meat

If you wash meat you create a mist of bacteria that travels around your kitchen

washing meat is a really really bad idea

I live rurally around farmers, no one washes meat anymore

washing does NOT kill salmonella, cooking it does.

you wash veg as it’s been in the dirt but not meat
