What do you have with lasagne?

Cooking for friends this week and am planning to make a lasagne. I was just going to serve it with a salad and garlic bread, not sure what type but should I add anything else? I always worry when I'm feeding other people but I'm probably overthinking it. What do you have with lasagne?

It's a bit sloppy and textureless if served alone.

Good lasagne is neither sloppy nor textureless!

Hedgerow2 · 01/09/2024 23:54

Never been able to get my head round people having chips/garlic bread with pasta. Too much stodge! A nice green or tomato and onion salad to counteract the richness of the lasagne would be my choice.

Never warmed a plate in my life! I didn't know that was a thing outside posh restaurants.

It's a standard thing in my world. If you're making a roast you stick the plates in the oven whilst the meat is resting.

Those who have salad, do you put it on the same (warmed) plate as hot food? Doesn't it become a bit limp and disappointing?

I guess I tried it wrong as people are saying a "nice crisp salad"...?

I wouldn’t warm plates for lasagne that I was serving with salad unless we were eating in an igloo or something. I’m not crazy about warmed plates in general, though as my mother has a habit of putting plates in the oven till they’re so baking hot anything served on them cooks further and gets crispy and frizzled around the edges before you can eat it. If it’s an issue serve the salad separately, after the lasagne.

I'm not a fan of double carbs but would go down the homemade garlic bread route balanced out with big salad - dressing on the side. Why on earth would people suggest chips?

SnowFrogJelly · 02/09/2024 00:51

Big salad
Garlic bread

My DH always wants chips with lasagna.

renthead · 02/09/2024 05:41

Can't get my head around chips with lasagna. Do people also serve chips alongside spaghetti bolognese?Confused that would be the same thing!

All lasagna needs is a green salad and maybe some crusty bread.

Really? Do you eat really fast before the food is cold? I like everything super hot and a hot plate keeps it that way.

Is your house freezing?

I serve food on cold plates, everyone eats at a moderate pace, chatting, taking a sip of a drink, and no food has ever gone cold as a result.

I love a cold crunchy coleslaw with lasagne. Think that might just be an Irish thing. The Italians would be scandalised no doubt.

Yes! 🥳. I'm actually wondering what size of portions people are eating. I think that's incredibly relative. I know in Northern Ireland it's smaller portions with garlic bread at least. I've a portion in the freezer I bought from a bakery. I reckon the portions over here would be like 10x10cm. 🤔

I do eat the portion by itself. Would struggle with triple carbs but I always eat until I'm full. Then revisit later if I've some left! Definitely definitely not a teeny tinyer.

Green salad with vinaigrette or lemon & basil

Maybe garlic bread, or warm ciabatta & garlic butter

Red wine

TheLadyIsAVamp · 02/09/2024 09:12

Thanks everyone, I'll do a nice salad and garlic bread and a tray of chips to cover all bases. There's a couple of teens so I'm sure the chips will get eaten anyway. For those asking about dessert, I'm not sure what, but one guest is bringing it.

No- salad in a bowl on the side

Two different types of salads or at least one big green one with a nice optional dressing. Maybe another carby side like garlic bread.

Yes in a separate bowl. I much prefer people being able to serve themselves. Also not just limp bits of lettuce, something decent.

Birdsaremyfriends · 02/09/2024 13:06

Plain green salad, red wine.

I’ve never been so irrationally angry at a thread. Chips (wedges, ideally) and lasagne are an incredible combo! Why are people so weird about this? It’s such a normal, standard thing! I imagine you all wear size 6 and below and count the calories in salad dressing. GAH.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 02/09/2024 18:14

Chips and salad, or chips and peas. Or maybe a baked potato . Occasionally I'll just have vegetables but my preference is some kind of potato too .

Spag bol is normally a full plate meal though - maybe some salad or bread on the side . I would never have a full plate of lasagne as it's too rich .

Or maybe some of us are more generous with lasagne portions?
I like chips, but not with lasagane. It's too stodgy for me.

We are having a riccotta and butternut squash lasagne for dinner tonight, and I am serving a tomato and onion sald with it.

Cuwins · 02/09/2024 18:47

@ThatFlightyTemptress
Most definitely not here. Need to loose about 10kg atleast and love my carbs which is most of my problem.
However I'm not a big chip fan- would much rather have bread or pasta. So I would go for a bigger lasagne serving. Even if I was doing it for other people it would never occur to me to do chips with it- just doesn't seem right. Garlic bread if it was just us and salad if I was making it for others.

Salad and Coleslaw

Cokeslaw most definitely doesn't go with lasagne ! Unless it's without the mayo .

LunaNorth · 02/09/2024 19:48

I caused controversy by serving it up to DH with chips and peas. He thought it was hilarious!

I didn’t think anything of it. Standard fare when I was growing up/a student.

Surely they are more or less the same dish?
