What do you have with lasagne?

Cooking for friends this week and am planning to make a lasagne. I was just going to serve it with a salad and garlic bread, not sure what type but should I add anything else? I always worry when I'm feeding other people but I'm probably overthinking it. What do you have with lasagne?

A rocket salad.

Amazed at people having chips or garlic bread. Lasagne is so dense and filling. We’d explode if we had chips or bread with it.

I would happily have chips and garlic bread😂 but we usually opt for one. I find lasagne a bit much (although obviously delicious) so prefer a smaller portion and another carb to break it up.

I guess it is weird though, I wouldn't generally bother doing a side with spag bol or carbonara.

Salad and garlic bread, l don't care about double cards...

Garlic bread.

I think I'm one of the few people who doesn't think salad and pasta go together.

This. Garlic bread is all that's needed. Garlic, onion, and tomatoes already plenty veg!

ttcat37 · 01/09/2024 15:49

Chips and salad are both a legal requirement under The Lasagne Act

Isometimeswonder · 01/09/2024 15:53

I don't really like cold salad with hot food but lots of people do this.
I prefer some veggies, normally courgette and broccoli or spinach.
No chips or garlic bread, too stodgy!

GingerPirate · 01/09/2024 16:01

A painful belly 😂
No thank you.

Really fancy a lasagne now!

But I'd serve a salad and red wine. Maybe green vegetables or garlic bread at a push. Never heard of serving potatoes of any kind with lasagne!

You’ve never heard of lasagne and chips? What the actual hell. You’re not living life as it should be lived!

Scottish so triple carbs are what I would like ..chips..lasagne and garlic bread
However reality id do a salad and tenderstem with peas and spinach sauteed in garlic oil

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/09/2024 16:21

I like lasagne and chips nut never serve it at home.

Serving lasagne with peas or broccoli sounds much weirder than with chips or garlic bread imo.

Salad if it’s just me and DH. Salad and garlic bread if I am having guests.

Make sure you give your ragu hours and hours. I make mine with pork and beef mince and chopped chicken livers. Rich and wonderful.

Don’t do chips - not necessary and not classy for a dinner party!

SaltandPepper22 · 01/09/2024 16:21

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie totally agree, broccoli and peas on the side is very odd!

Absolutely! In fact chips are an official side salad anyway in the west of Scotland.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 01/09/2024 16:27

Salad or chips or garlic bread

DancingFerret · 01/09/2024 16:35

As someone who's never understood why garlic bread is served as an accompaniment to lasagne (too many carbs and unnecessary calories), and who also loathes salad, my answer would be nothing, especially if some sort of dessert or pudding is also on the menu for "afters".

outdamnedspots · 01/09/2024 16:39

Garlic bread or chips, plus green salad or tomato, basil and red onion salad - to cut through the richness of the lasagne.

steadywinner · 01/09/2024 16:48

Salad and garlic bread

spaceshooter · 01/09/2024 17:03

Salad.

Funnywonder · 01/09/2024 17:31

Sounds perfect to serve salad and garlic bread.

I get the whole not wanting to double carb etc, but people (including me) do eat burgers and chips. Plenty of carbs in that burger bun.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 01/09/2024 17:35

Chips and thickly buttered slices of French baguette, but then I’m a fat fucker

See for me it’s nothing to do with perceived greed, it’s about how damn delicious lasagne is. Why would I want something as ordinary as chips when I could have more lasagne? Though I will concede that I enjoy it with focaccia to mop the plate - but that’s because I consider it a god tier food equal to lasagne, to me chips are inferior to it. I also agree with PP a crunchy green salad is nice to cut through.

Noseybookworm · 01/09/2024 17:54

Salad and garlic bread is pretty perfect with lasagne I think. I sometimes do some roasted broccoli with lemon and garlic on the side too!

BeyondMyWits · 01/09/2024 17:56

Those who have salad, do you put it on the same (warmed) plate as hot food? Doesn't it become a bit limp and disappointing?

I guess I tried it wrong as people are saying a "nice crisp salad"...?

kitsuneghost · 01/09/2024 18:10

Just salad
Wouldn't have garlic bread too on our own but would serve it for guests

mathanxiety · 01/09/2024 18:38

Either a tossed greennsalad or anspinach salad. There are plenty of carbs in the lasagne itself, so no more carbs are needed on the side imo.

A warmed plate?

None of that malarkey here.
