What do you have with lasagne?

Cooking for friends this week and am planning to make a lasagne. I was just going to serve it with a salad and garlic bread, not sure what type but should I add anything else? I always worry when I'm feeding other people but I'm probably overthinking it. What do you have with lasagne?

Chips???

Like a pub in the 1989s when lasagna was considered foreign food 😂

StTola · 01/09/2024 12:45

Salad. Something really cold and crunchy with a sharp vinaigrette, for lovely textural/temperature contrasts. I’m a total carb monster, but I don’t get the chips or garlic bread accompaniment — it would seem far too one-note and stodgy to me alongside lasagne.

Most non-Gastro pubs round me still serve chips with lasagna. As they serve chips with everything anyway. It's not that unusual.

Salad and garlic bread

Thanks, really puzzled as to why it's such a weird thing apparently 🤨

Mumsnet is not a good place to ask. You'll get loads of answers telling you that the only acceptable accompaniment to lasagne is self flagellation for daring to eat anything that contains carbohydrates. This is the land where 500g of mince feeds 16 after all...

Scampuss · 01/09/2024 12:52

More lasagne.

Maybe some rocket on the side.

Sethera · 01/09/2024 12:54

I serve garlic bread if anything, depends how hungry I am and how much lasagne there is..

If someone was cooking for me, I wouldn't care what they served with it.

If they’re serving it with chips they aren’t giving you nearly enough lasagna

I was going to say this.

If the plate looks a bit full, leave off the rocket

I'd double carb it with garlic bread and then have a big green salad and a glass of red.

Waitingfordoggo · 01/09/2024 13:00

For me, just salad is enough. If I’ve got a decent size portion of lasagne, I don’t also need bread or chips. My kids and DH do like garlic bread with theirs though.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/09/2024 13:00

Salad and garlic bread. If it was just for me alone I wouldn't bother with the garlic bread, but everyone else seems to serve it with lasagne, so I wouldn't leave it out for guests. Olives etc are good too.

Iwasafool · 01/09/2024 13:01

Salad and garlic bread is fine, we had it for dinner yesterday and clean plates all round.

AuntieMarys · 01/09/2024 13:06

Salad and red wine

Day99 · 01/09/2024 13:11

Really fancy a lasagne now!

But I'd serve a salad and red wine. Maybe green vegetables or garlic bread at a push. Never heard of serving potatoes of any kind with lasagne!

you use them to soak up the cheese and meat juices and add a bit of texture. otherwise it's just slop.

Andoutcomethewolves · 01/09/2024 13:11

Always basically a big green salad (incl. toms!) with balsamic dressing, also garlic bread if I'm feeling decadent or having guests! Maybe some different kinds of marinated olives in small bowls to share in the middle of the table if I have guests, if it's just me and H I'll just put some on my plate (H thinks they're the work of the devil and so apparently do quite a few other weirdos people). No need for anything else, I can barely move for an hour after that as it is 😅

I've been served lasagne at many friends' and families' houses over the years and it's always basically the same as the above (give or take the olives!).

TubeScreamer · 01/09/2024 13:12

Salad and sometimes garlic bread too.

evtheria · 01/09/2024 13:19

A fresh green salad eg even just a simple butterhead lettuce with a red wine vinegar dressing. I'll make garlic bread for everyone else but don't eat it myself, feel it's just stodgy upon stodge...

But the real question is what about after? Grin Cake

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/09/2024 13:26

For guests, I do a green salad plus a tomato and basil salad, a bowl of olives and nice bread.

If it's just us, I like it with lettuce, cucumber and coleslaw.

MikeRafone · 01/09/2024 13:28

A green salad

Growlybear83 · 01/09/2024 13:28

I wouldn't serve anything with lasagne. Most people I know would leave any salad that came with lasagne.

Stressybetty · 01/09/2024 13:32

Garlic bread and peas. Probably a bowl of salad out as well.

If we have guests probably tiramisu 😋

If it's just us I'd probably just have something like some fruit and a scoop of ice cream (if anything at all!)

Definitely nothing heavy - my mum always serves up big slabs of cake smothered in cream AND ice cream then gets hurt when inevitably loads gets left over! The thing is she's like Mrs Doyle and won't take no for an answer despite our protestations 🤣
