What do you have with lasagne?

Cooking for friends this week and am planning to make a lasagne. I was just going to serve it with a salad and garlic bread, not sure what type but should I add anything else? I always worry when I'm feeding other people but I'm probably overthinking it. What do you have with lasagne?

If you're having lasagne, chips to dip in the sauce is really tasty and also a side of garlic bread.
Funnily enough I don't eat lasagne every week so if I'm going to eat carbs I will indulge. Grin
Mumsnet replies always make me laugh, like they're trying to outdo each other on how healthy they can be.

So serving it with mash and veg, and a glug of thick gravy, is a big no-no then... 🤔

Asking for a friend obvs.

😱

Is your 'friend' quite...OK?

Usually chips and a tasty salad.

LittleGreenDragons · 01/09/2024 13:37

Perfectly. But lasagne is considered a winter meal and not a summer meal. Mash and veg in winter, salad in summer.

Obvs 😂

@Devilsmommy

It's just a silly joke from Phoenix Nights.

Something crunchy like a cucumber salad or grated carrots with garlicky vinaigrette.

For dessert, either fresh fruit salad, perfectly sweet peaches or melon (not watermelon which has already peaked). Vanilla ice cream for those who want it.

Cooking for 1 tonight so I’ll cook some frozen lasagne, make grated carrots and then incorporate a trip to the local gelateria into the dog walk. Candied pistachio, I think…

Salad and bread to mop up the plate. Not garlic bread though, it will spoil the lasagna, but a freshly baked ciabatta on a board, cut at the table. Get an olive one if you want some variety.

Salad. Something really cold and crunchy with a sharp vinaigrette, for lovely textural/temperature contrasts. I’m a total carb monster, but I don’t get the chips or garlic bread accompaniment — it would seem far too one-note and stodgy to me alongside lasagne.

That ^^
I use the Wagamama salad dressing recipe which works great with it

softmauve · 01/09/2024 13:49

Just lasagna unless it's for a big group and then I'll add salad and focaccia.

Reallybadidea · 01/09/2024 13:50

Homemade focaccia, because I'm a wanker and salad.

Definitely not peas.

BeyondMyWits · 01/09/2024 13:53

Never understood cold leafy salad with hot food. Doesn't it wilt with the heat?

We have green beans or tenderstem broccoli (hot, dressed with melted butter, salt and pepper)

Chips AND garlic bread 🤣 🤣 🤣

suburburban · 01/09/2024 14:00

Salad and garlic bread normally

MassiveOvaryaction · 01/09/2024 14:04

Green salad. Garlic bread or focaccia.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/09/2024 14:05

Salad, chips, garlic bread, garlic dip, olives - the usual things. Lasagne isn't a meal to scrimp on.

Garlic dip? What are you dipping into it?

Zerro · 01/09/2024 14:14

I wouldn't eat garlic bread but my family would so I'd serve it. I would like salad but I've noticed that when catering for large groups, especially younger adults they don't touch salad so I tend to do some green beans, buttered carrots that kind of thing.

BeautyPageantDropout · 01/09/2024 14:15

I love a cold crunchy coleslaw with lasagne. Think that might just be an Irish thing. The Italians would be scandalised no doubt.

BCBird · 01/09/2024 14:16

Salad fine. I know people like garlic bread too.

LoneHydrangea · 01/09/2024 14:19

A rocket salad.

Amazed at people having chips or garlic bread. Lasagne is so dense and filling. We’d explode if we had chips or bread with it.

FeltCarrot · 01/09/2024 14:27

I was once asked if I wanted gravy with my lasagne in a pub in the 90’s!

I was once the only vegetarian at an old fashioned pub, when a group of us went for a Christmas meal. Everyone got turkey and all the trimmings. Me? veggie lasagne, plus roasties, sprouts, stuffing etc. I was not impressed!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/09/2024 14:40

Just salad. Not out of any 'self-flagelation' or because 'Ooh it's too filling for me!' (if that's the problem you can just have smaller portions). Just because I think eating chips with pasta is weird. You wouldn't have spaghetti bolognese and chips, would you? I wouldn't have garlic bread either. Just lots of lasagne!

JoyousPinkPeer · 01/09/2024 14:40

Sounds perfect
