What do you have with lasagne?

Cooking for friends this week and am planning to make a lasagne. I was just going to serve it with a salad and garlic bread, not sure what type but should I add anything else? I always worry when I'm feeding other people but I'm probably overthinking it. What do you have with lasagne?

Never warmed a plate in my life! I didn't know that was a thing outside posh restaurants.

Really? Do you eat really fast before the food is cold? I like everything super hot and a hot plate keeps it that way.

That's for corned beef, isn't it?

Oh thank you!! I have that damn song stuck in my head now. 😂😂😂

Salad when it's just for us, with guests I'd do garlic bread too

Salad. That’s all it needs, the lasagna has everything else.

Same.

Although, tonight we had roasted broccoli with it.

Lasagne doesn't need hot plates as surely you want to leave it to cool down a bit in the pan first before you serve it?

I also vote for mixed salad, vinaigrette and extra lasagne. It doesn't need anything else.

A bin bag.. lasagne..bleurgh.

ItsAStupidQuestion · 01/09/2024 20:49

Salad, cucumber and garlic bread. My children like a buttered corn on the cob on the side as well.

And I love salad cream all over mine 🙈

Cuwins · 01/09/2024 20:50

@Zerro these days I'm up/down sorting the toddler out so definitely not.

Salad cream on lasagne?

That's a crime against god and man.

Those who have salad, do you put it on the same (warmed) plate as hot food? Doesn't it become a bit limp and disappointing?

I guess I tried it wrong as people are saying a "nice crisp salad"...?

I don't "plate up" because that means dictating what and how much each individual eats - ovenware goes on the table where possible, or into serving dishes for everyone to serve themselves.

I don't warm plates because I don't see any point - my family are always blowing on food to cool it anyway so it's clearly hot and because I have a standard oven - I don't have a separate "top oven" (do people usually have those these days?).

We always have separate side dishes for salad (regardless of what it's served with) although perhaps this is a non UK custom, I'm not sure. It's definitely better anyway - dressed salad always works better in a separate bowl.

We all eat biggish portions of lasagne rather than a random potato dish with it.

I would have garlic bread and salad, my DH has to have chips.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/09/2024 22:45

Like tenderstem brocolli with ours.

mondaytosunday · 01/09/2024 22:46

Salad. May add garlic bread if you like but I generally just have a nice salad with lots of different veg.

I would happily have chips and garlic bread😂 but we usually opt for one. I find lasagne a bit much (although obviously delicious) so prefer a smaller portion and another carb to break it up.

I guess it is weird though, I wouldn't generally bother doing a side with spag bol or carbonara.

I was out for dinner last night and my friend had carbonara. The restaurant serves it with garlic bread.

I'd go salad and/or chips/garlic bread.

caringcarer · 01/09/2024 23:11

Chips and D's has salad and garlic bread.

I was going to say this.

If the plate looks a bit full, leave off the rocket

Salad, just salad anything else is weird especially any mention of potatoes

Mardyybum · 01/09/2024 23:25

I made a lasagne tonight with tenderstem brocolli and garlic bread made using a tortilla wrap - I find baguette/pizza dough garlic bread too heavy but wrap garlic bread is my favourite!

clare8allthepies · 01/09/2024 23:28

It depends on the lasagne. Until they stopped doing it recently we always used to get the Tesco finest lasagne which was delicious but also mainly sauce and not much pasta so definitely needed something carby with it. If everyone in my family liked garlic bread I would do that but as they don’t it was chips and salad.

Last time one of us had lasagne out somewhere it was much denser and served in a definite slice, there is no way that you would be wanting an extra carb alongside that!

Bbq1 · 01/09/2024 23:32

It's a bit sloppy and textureless if served alone.
