You know the one where you got to the table and your heart sank into your boots because you were starving and had been looking forward to your dinner only to find........

Sweet and sour chicken made with a lurid sauce from a packet or jar - I despised it.

beef stew, or chewing meat stew as me and bro used to call it... fatty chewy bits of brown beef, floating in gravy with odd bit of carrot, celery thrown in, you could chew for ages on one bit of meat, my bro used to cunningly spit it out and put it in his pockets then try and dispose of it!!

wonder how many on here feed their kids liver?

Pavlovthecat · 18/03/2008 19:07

Curry, made with curry powder.

JingleyJen · 18/03/2008 19:09

it was never the savory that made me gag but semolina did every time and we weren't allowed to leave the table until it was finished.

Pavlovthecat · 18/03/2008 19:09

I actually used to like liver and bacon, but not the cabbage that went with it. Mum used to coat liver in cornflour, then use the left over flour to thicken the gravy, creamy mash, mmmmm. I was not keen on the bacon really, but have good memories of that dinner....could be altered memories though eh?

SorenLorensen · 18/03/2008 19:10

I don't remember hating anything we had at home - wasn't very keen on macaroni cheese, but I'd eat it. I love liver

But school dinners...they were just grim. Tapioca with prunes dolloped on it. And you had to have the prunes.

And ice cream scoops of lumpy mashed potato.

And the most gristly meat.

Ugh.

ALMummy · 18/03/2008 19:10

Cant believe how many responses to this thread. Think it struck a chord . Would NEVER give my kids liver (despite its endorsement in the Annabelle Karmel recipe books) or indeed any of other revolting foodstuffs mentioned on here. Faggots! I forgot about them, absolutely foul. Also disgusting school pudding of bananas and custard - WHY, WHY, WHY?

I just read 'spam fritters' at school ERRR!!! Anyone used to have 'cowboy pie'? Spam, beans and pastry. YUCK too !

claricebeansmum · 18/03/2008 19:16

Faggots and pease pudding
Liver

Indescribable - yeuch!

My mother used to make sandwiches for me and Dad for a fortnight and put them in freezer - all meat paste, fish paste and sandwich spread. Marmite and cucumber if you were lucky - just imagine defrosted cucumber in your sandwiches!

Blandmum · 18/03/2008 19:17

Oh I liked faggots and peas.

That was nice compared to most of my mother's meals!

ALMummy · 18/03/2008 19:19

CBM - so did mine! I posted about that somewhere above, same as you sandwich spread, fishpaste, peanut butter. I asked her WHY? she did that the other day and she said it was a tip from a Womans Magazine - so some elderly ex editor somewhere has a lot to answer for.

Almummy - I saw your post and it reminded me.

It is probably one of the most revolting things ever.

When my parents last moved a couple of years ago my mother said she would male a picnic for us....you've guessed it...but unfortunately with her mind on other things the sandwiches came out of the freezer a bit late so we ended up sitting around eating partially frozen sandwiches and she thought it was perfectly normal!!! I've never been so jealous of a removal mans "Upper Crust" BLT baguette...

Blandmum · 18/03/2008 19:26

One thing that we used to have for 'tea' was cold tinned tomatoes with bread and butter!

annoyingdevil · 18/03/2008 19:28

Banana custard - yuk

claricebeansmum · 18/03/2008 19:28

That's really horrid Martian. Why cold? Warm with some herbs and it could have been sold as soup or something but cold...

TheFallenMadonna · 18/03/2008 19:29

Tripe and onions. Why fgs?

TheArmadillo · 18/03/2008 19:44

tripe and onions were the worst meal for both my parents.

That's why I have never eaten it.

Thankfully.

Can't forgive them for the liver though.

TheFallenMadonna · 18/03/2008 19:52

I like liver. And hearts.

My grandmother was a bit of an offal fan I think.

fircone · 18/03/2008 20:11

I'm feeling so nostalgic. I want to head back in time and have my mum's dinners - even the horrible ones.

Luuurve stew, liver, cold custard, tinned fruit, Carnation milk...

But - the one dinner I really couldn't stomach was bloaters. It was so depressing when my father bought these flaccid tasteless fish out of his briefcase on a Friday evening.

Highlander · 19/03/2008 10:29

mince made without gravy.

It is no coincidence that me and my sisters can now make cracking shepherd's pie.

StrangeTown · 19/03/2008 10:31

'Wet steak' made by my dad. Cheap meat in grey gravy.

Twinkie1 · 19/03/2008 10:32

Pork with cream and lemon - I hate pork but pork with double cream on grilling and then having lemon squeezed on it is just barf worthy!

GooseyLoosey · 19/03/2008 10:33

Mince and carrots. I would try and feed it to the dog. Backfired once as dog had got half way through when adult came back in the room and I had to try and eat the rest, complete with doggy saliva.

Greensleeves · 19/03/2008 12:38

pmsl at "bloaters". It's not a very inviting title, is it
