What was your worst meal as a child?

You know the one where you got to the table and your heart sank into your boots because you were starving and had been looking forward to your dinner only to find........

Sweet and sour chicken made with a lurid sauce from a packet or jar - I despised it.

Liver was the worst recurrent nightmare of my childhood. The taste, the texture - all of it vile (and then you find out what that particular organ does....)

However the single worst was the episode involving cold fish (plaice) skin for breakfast. I hadn't eaten it all up the night before and was told I would never get anything else to eat until it was all finished up. I remind my mother of this pretty much every time I see her, it's now part of family fokelore (and therefore I may have just outed myself!) We have a laugh about it, but it's shaped how we bring the kids up - I won't force them to eat anything they don't want to (they have to at least try it though).

liver and onion
faggots (bleeeee)
ratatouille because when I was a kid I didn't like aubergines or courgettes. Or peppers.

and spam fritters with lumpy mash at school
and school cabbage
actually all the food I had at school was gross, really

Nappyzone · 16/03/2008 20:25

Panacalty (cant spell it but similar to corned beef hash) bleurghhhhhhhh

Also liver and onions

My family loved the above and mushrooms which now make me yack - i would sit for an age in the back room alone then hide it in the bin and cover it with something else so as not to get found out or just cry into it lol - spitting it into cup of drink to hide it lol!

All these postings are bringing back horrible memories!

My DM had a thing about offal in all its forms.... liver (which I loathed) was a treat compared to some of the offer stuff we were force fed. For instance, lights which is cows lung (that was boiled) , chitterlings (intestines) and sweetbreads on toast. Sweetbreads is the pancreas I think. Bleurghhhh!!!

Is it any wonder that I cannot eat offal of any description..... hate the stuff!

My nightmare school dinner consists of

Savoury mince and boiled potatoes
Tapioca or sago pudding

Actually my 2nd primary school provided really good meals baked on site.

My first primary school served said tapioca and my secondary school was even worse.

Lomond · 16/03/2008 21:02

Mince and potatoes, hated it! I like it now but only when I cook it myself.

Alishanty · 18/03/2008 12:16

fluffyanimal · 18/03/2008 12:23

A school dinner of 'steak' pie. The meat inside was mostly gristle. I chewed on one piece for nearly 5 minutes, knowing I would be told off for spitting it out, but knowing I would puke if I swallowed it. I can't remember how I solved that dilemma... I must have excised the traumatic event from my consciousness!

chenin · 18/03/2008 13:24

jumpingbeans.....nooooooooo!!!! Please don't tell me I have eaten bollocks! Maybe that is why I talk bollocks - its all beginning to fall into place now

jumpingbeans · 18/03/2008 13:26

School liver mashed pots ( smash) and tinned tomatoes.

totalmisfit · 18/03/2008 13:31

school mash and coleslaw, with a slab of something chalky and tasteless for afters.

at home it was flabby skate in a parsley sauce. yuk yuk yuk. just the texture of skate when cooked like that is all wrong, like eating pure fish flavoured fat.

sweetbreads are NOT testicles

They are either the thymus gland or pancreas

Look it up on google

jumpingbeans · 18/03/2008 14:04

sophy · 18/03/2008 16:16

Anyone remember Findus Crispy Pancakes?

Was a staple of my Mum's. Cheese ones were OK but the once with mince in were rank.

TheArmadillo · 18/03/2008 16:27

every sat teatime was liver and spinach with homemade chips. I detest every part of that.

And on fridays we'd have boiled plaice with tinned new potatoes peas and tomatoes - well I liked tomatoes.

My parents were actually good cooks, most of the time.
