What was your worst meal as a child?

You know the one where you got to the table and your heart sank into your boots because you were starving and had been looking forward to your dinner only to find........

Sweet and sour chicken made with a lurid sauce from a packet or jar - I despised it.

oh and tinned chicken soup. I remember crying as a child (7ish) because I went to a friend's house for tea and we had Heinz chicken soup and I'd only ever eaten tomato!! Its hard to believe I am so unfussy now

Blandmum · 16/03/2008 18:35

her pastry was to die for. the rest of her food just made you wish for a swift end really.

ALMummy · 16/03/2008 18:36

My mother used Oxtail soup as gravy. She would also make ALL my sandwiches for the week for my packed lunches and then.........FREEZE THEM!

Corned beef hash - made with smash

I found out later it was a really cheap absolutely desperate meal when she was broke

TheApprentice · 16/03/2008 18:38

Another vote for liver.

At school we had the most vile "meat" dish called brown betty, it was made in a pudding basin and had the look and texture of pedigree chum. And we had to eat it all too.

PersonalClown · 16/03/2008 18:38

My mums steak and kidney pie.
I always got the bit with more kidney in it.

edam · 16/03/2008 18:39

steak and kidney pudding. My mother is a very good cook but I just couldn't cope with the texture of kidney. I remember being made to sit there until I'd finished it - thank Christ the cat came along or I'd still be there now.

sherby · 16/03/2008 18:40

Liver and onions

GentleOtter · 16/03/2008 18:40

moondog - I just Googled potted haugh and am now in total shock.
THIS is potted haugh Even saying it sounds like being sick.

QueenMeabhOfConnaught · 16/03/2008 18:41

Another vote for liver and for steak and kidney pudding.

Although I am VERY grateful I didn't have to suffer ALMummy's mum's Oxtail soup gravy .

lissielouwithbunnyears · 16/03/2008 18:41

spam. anything with spam in it. makes me heave now to think of it. whenever i see that spam up advert it makes me want to puke. if dh cooked spam for our anniversary id be at the solicitors 1st thing!!

Maidamess · 16/03/2008 18:42

spaghetti bolognese with microscopic pieces of mushroom in, which I would painstakingly remove one by one and leave on the rim of my plate.

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 16/03/2008 18:42

I shall taunt you with the thought of a spam fritter lissie

collision · 16/03/2008 18:42

Ugh! I need counselling over this.

Really.

Mum would give us a rehash EVERY feckin' Monday of what we had had for Sunday dinner!

Reheated mashed carrots and reheated roast potatoes and cold meat and reheated gravy!

VOM VOM VOM VOM!

and if she decided she wanted fish, she would get cheap white fish and cover it in those VILE orange breadcrumbs and grill it!

Meanwhile my brothers would be tucking into toad in the hole and beans which I wasnt allowed because I was fat (which I wasnt! )

....and i wonder why i have food issues!

collision · 16/03/2008 18:44

gentleotter! GROSS! Head cheese!

Katymac, my DH used to be given tinned tuna and baked beans as a meal (his worst meal) and he said that it is only now that he realises it was because his parents had no money left.

The dreaded C word. casserole [vom]

We used to never mention it in case mum said 'ooh yes we haven't had one for ages' and then made one.

Also FAGGOTS . Yuk.

castille · 16/03/2008 18:44

spaghetti bolognese here too

all home made and very nice (no mushrooms!) but however much I ate, the mountain on my plate never seemed to go down

very demoralising

DebitheScot · 16/03/2008 18:47

Liver for me too. Boak. It was always really chewy and dry and I had to sit at the table until it was finished. One day I sneaked some into the bin but got caught, can't remember exactly what happened but sure it wasn't good.

But the worst dish of all (and I feel sick thinking about it) was this cheesy mushroom risotto thing. I like cheese and rice but not mushrooms and when the mushrooms were mixed into and cooked with the cheese it made the cheese taste sooooooo vile. And it was stodgy and sticky and yuck yuck yuck.

luckylady74 · 16/03/2008 18:47

Am I the only one thinking that a lot of these - particularly the puddings and spam fritters sound yummy? I loved liver and tongue sandwiches! Offal doesnt appeal any more, but I didn't think about what it was as a child.
To confirm my freak status the only thing I have nver liked is brown chocolate and other cocoa based products!

pinkteddy · 16/03/2008 18:49

Clicked on this thread with aim of adding liver but reading through has made me pmsl!! I am literally wiping the tears away!

Hassled · 16/03/2008 18:52

Belly Pork - a piece of meat about the size of a penny, surrounded by a fat ring of white glistening fat. The thought of it still makes me want to heave.

lissielouwithbunnyears · 16/03/2008 18:52

i used to love bubble and squeek (or rehashed sunday lunch) but mum used to serve it with spam. (im v traumatised!)

on a seperate note, when i was little i used to eat the parsons nose of the chicken. the skin was always v crunchy and the meat v juicy. that was until gramps told me that i was eating a chickens bum hole.

hinkyminky · 16/03/2008 18:53

OM fecking God, Moondog, that head meat thing? WTF is wrong with people that they have to do such repulsive mad horrible things to animals???
