Who wants to enter here please. This will be fab. Now we have to find some judges. I think we should put thread in chat and ask someone to judge based on their credentials Obviously they will be only looking at a pic not tasting. We need rules as well??? Good idea or not.

super quick super quick, on way out to cinema.

Keeping in the theme of the village show, and thinking that this competition is likely to be a very visual one I was thinking why don't we display our VSC's in a diaorama or tableaux.

For instance our village fete theme this year is recycling (last year was 'in an English country garden' I think, year before 'under the sea'). In each section (baking, floral arrangements, art, craft, vegetables etc) there is an option to go with the theme (and be in with a chance of winning a cup).

Just an idea, might make the whole thing more challenging and entertaining if there was an artistic/imaginative element to each individual display. As well as looking to see how nice your cake looks, smoothness of line, doily used etc.

back tomorrow

kickassangel · 12/06/2007 22:13

i'm in.
also like the idea of a theme
couldn't we send i piece of cake off to the judges so they can taste?

AttilaTheMum · 12/06/2007 22:22

Pennies - is one of the village fetes you go to Datchworth?
This is the 1960 fete - I'm the little dark haired girl on the right, waiting for my decorated vehicle to be judged (the stripy one in the middle) - I won btw! [proud emoticon]

VictoriaQueenOfSponge · 12/06/2007 22:30

Hey Attila, my family are just down the road! (Watton)

AttilaTheMum · 12/06/2007 22:33

Our doctor was at Watton. I was born in Datchworth & lived there till I was 18, went to school in WGC. Both my brothers still live in Datchworth.

Datchworth was last week! Gorgeous photo Atilla!!

Didn't get there in time to see the WI cake stall but my oh my some of the confections available in the tea tent were marvellous to behold indeed.

SSSandy2 · 13/06/2007 08:57

ooh I would be into this if only it weren't a SPONGE cake. I love baking cakes but I hate sponge cake

Can we have a chocolate cake or a nutcake competition too? pretty please

casbie · 13/06/2007 09:23

i'm in...

devils proporations (! we won't start some sort of rip in time and space by baking with 666/3 all at the same time, letting himself into our kitchens and dirupting family harmony and further cake creating, will we?!)

and will buy some decent scales to measure eggs with.

do you measure eggs with or without shell?

can we use icing sugar for topping or just caster?

i'm novice and baker in training!

Hazelnut cake is yummy
So is almond cake
nearly every kind of cake except black forest or sponge...

BishyBarneyBee · 13/06/2007 09:29

Hugh Fernally WhittingSpittingADooDar weighs the eggs with the shells on (whilst humanly killing a chicken with his other hand.)

SSSandy2 · 13/06/2007 09:30

casbee why are you measuring eggs?

Right round of applause for Mrs Cake who has very kindly agreed to judge it for us.

We shall stick to Slubs rules on the other thread. I am sure you all know which one. If anyone is more lively than me this morning please post a simple copy of the rules. Otherwise it may take time in between feeds etc for me to pick them out of the thread.

I suggest a Deadline of Sunday 17th June at midnight.

Shall we put our pics on our profiles or would you like to use a picturetrail. I can start one - no probs.

Everyone ok with this.

Basics as per Slub

Here are the fundamentals:

No cream

Thick layer of jam (marks deducted for scrimping). Raspberry. Seedless/seeded depends upon the preference of the judge on the day. Bit of a gamble that one.

Light dusting of caster sugar only. (patterns right out).

White china plate with a nice doilly.

The judges look for a nice smooth edge to the cake. Fluted nonsense out of a poncy liner is frowned upon.

Above all they are looking for a good taste. Butter is a must. No exact recipe has to be followed (wiggle room there to introduce the nigella recipe??), but Mrs VSC winner did reccomend the 6/6/6 option as being particularly popular.

Whew. This is quite some undertaking I have realised.

Don't LL, I have just told my neighbour and she did look at me rather strangely

I think you should ask a trusted friend to tell you honestly and then, no fibbing, admit what they said on here.

I have the perfect cover story as last night BIL asked me to bake him a birthday cake. I usually do chocolate but he specifically asked for VSC! And I get to photograph it without daft questions being asked (DH frowns enough upon Mnet as it is LOL)

Was just in DS1's school looking longingly at their old fashioned weylux balance scales lined up in the resources area

ChippyMinton · 13/06/2007 12:06

casbie - weigh eggs in shells.

kickassangel · 13/06/2007 12:24

is it too complicated to have more than one category & turn this into a whole fair? we could have VSC, OTHER type of cake, and something on a theme? IF our jusge allows this, we could send off a sample (packaged appropriately) for tasting!
how will we safe guard against people copying images from recipe books?
and have we yet resolved the whole doily issue?
