I've made a couple recently that I want to show off to people... We could all go 'ooooh' at each other's efforts!

Thanks Smile

Fondant with piping/edible pen for fine details.

Tracing from googled colouring pages onto takeaway carton lids creates very affordable templates Wink

Lovecat, how did you do the towel effect?

HugAndRoll · 17/03/2014 22:02

Could I please have the recipe for the wheat and egg free cake. I shouldn't eat gluten (waiting for coeliac biopsy but had positive blood test) and ds2 has an egg allergy. Most gluten free cakes require more egg as far as I've seen.

My most recent cake for dd's 5th birthday. I was very short on time and had to decorate it in under 2 hours!

Lovecat - here (for my own birthday, so hastily done) - yours was better

oh my word moosemama - she's got frilly petticoats. In 2 hours Shock? Amazing.

moosemama · 17/03/2014 22:16

Found dd's 2nd birthday cake, then realised I don't have any other cake photos on this laptop. There are a few on my profile pics though.

Need to organise cakes for ds1 and ds2 for the beginning of April. Ds1 wants a Minecraft Enderdragon and ds1 has asked for a Blastoise pokemon. Shock

Dd1 had a cake competition for world book day and we made this together.

stealthsquiggle, frilly petticoats are really easy and quick to do. I only ever do cakes that have really basic constituent parts. Blush

stealthsquiggle · 17/03/2014 22:19

I'd say the Pokemon was the easier of the two impossible requests - how the actual whatever are you going to do that dragon? I can't get right angles sharp on the cake itself, let alone on something that intricate.

Lovecat · 17/03/2014 22:25

Stealth, that's brilliant :)

I'm dreading next year's cake request, tbh, DD has discovered Minecraft so I'm fully expecting a demand for a squared off cake of some description...

moosemama · 17/03/2014 22:30

I have absolutely no idea! Grin

As you rightly said, right angles are just so hard to do. I could do angles in royal icing, given enough time - but black royal icing - er no thanks.

There are a few drawings of non-angular ender dragons about, where fans have created fan-art, but ds has ASD so it's angular or nothing.

I was hoping they would ask me for Despicable Me Minion cakes as they had the dvd for Christmas. Hmm

Over the years they've had a cartoon style bomb (see profile) that was for a spy party, a space shuttle (space party) various Thomas The Tank Engine trains, a full 3D Pichu (unevolved form of Pikachu or so I'm told) and a 3D Ditto (Pink blobby, shape-changing Pokemon). Dd has had a rainbow with meringue clouds and pot of gold, Gaston the Ladybird, a fairy/pixie/hobbit castle and the Fairy Princess, plus another one which has totally eluded me for the moment. Dh had a zombie graveyard cake (on profile) for his 40th Zombie party.

moosemama · 17/03/2014 22:37

Lovecat, You just reminded me. Both of my Boys had minecraft cakes last year. I just made chocolate and vanilla cubes and cubes of blue jelly, then stacked them up and dowelled them together with iced buttercream grass on the top.

The characters to go on top etc are really easy to make. Basically you just need to cut the fondant into the right size cubes and rectangles with a very sharp knife and then assemble them. Ds1 had creepers, ds2 chose spiders. There are loads of images on Google to copy.

stealthsquiggle · 17/03/2014 22:46

ooh, I did a bomb too. Also for a spy party. Hang on.

Oh, it won't let me add a picture Sad

Moosemama can I ask how you did the footballs for your cupcakes? Did you get a mould or do all the markings by hand?

AlpacaPicnic · 17/03/2014 23:30

This was my first attempt at a 'fancy' cake. It was supposed to be a geological representation of the earth so as you cut into it, it revealed all the layers. Sadly I didn't get a pic of the final result as the friend I made it for took it home uncut... but hopefully you can see what I was trying to achieve. The undue orated version is one of three test runs I did Blush and for the final product! I covered it in chocolate ganache before the fondant went on, to give the impression hopefully of the earths crust.

Minion rush cake for DS2s birthday this year. Wish I could take credit for it but a theatre nurse made it for me, I didn't have time. I think she's amazing :)

Top cake was Belgian chocolate, inside was rainbow. She makes her rainbow by pouring each colour exactly in the centre of a round tin, letting it settle and then pouring the next colour in - each new one pushes the first one out towards the edge. We ended up with the most perfect vertical stripes when we cut into it.

I love minions!

stealthsquiggle · 18/03/2014 07:07

Alpaca - how did you do the layers? As HicDragonis describes, or by other means?

moosemama · 18/03/2014 09:34

stealth, I used a silcone mould and painted the black bits in using an icing pen. Like I say - always the easy route for me! Wink

Lovecat · 18/03/2014 10:03

Moosemama, the blue jelly idea is genius! :o Thank you :)

stealthsquiggle · 18/03/2014 10:07

Having attempted a football on a larger scale once without a mould, I agree entirely, moosemama - I was just checking (see earlier comments about sport-themed cupcakes) - I did hover over the 'buy' button on a silicone mould but then came to my senses - DS hates football, so unless DD suddenly takes it up I wouldn't have any future use for it, and moulds that only get used once annoy me.

stealthsquiggle · 18/03/2014 10:10

Oh, and since it will let me post pictures again now, bomb cake.. and a monster and a daisy for good measure.

Grin My boys hate football as well, but I wanted something that would sell well at the school's Summer Fayre.

Love your bomb. I used an indoor sparkler in ds's, but I bet your fountain was far more spectacular.

doradoo · 18/03/2014 10:31

Oooh love a good bit of cakery!!

Here are a few of my offerings....
