I've made a couple recently that I want to show off to people... We could all go 'ooooh' at each other's efforts!

I'm quite proud of this one. I should add, I have a special dalek-shaped cake mould, I didn't hand carve it!

I love your Nightmare Before Christmas Jack cake Midori! Was it difficult?

Electryone · 17/03/2014 12:45

This was a cake I did for a colleague who was retiring, its the house where we used to work!

My wee boy's first birthday cake, wheat, egg and dairy free. Took me seven attempts to get a cake I could use!

His second birthday last may- just egg and dairy free this time. Was still a nightmare!

Loving the amazing efforts seen up thread, can only dream of getting better at this without having to resort to a professional for the next one!

stealthsquiggle · 17/03/2014 14:26

Rebus they are lovely. I am always in awe of bakers dealing with allergies - as soon as someone says "no xyz" all I can ever think of is recipes which rely on xyz...

feetheart · 17/03/2014 14:46

These are brilliant, I should be working but am drooling instead :)
Here are a few of mine:

DS's 2nd birthday

and his 3rd birthday

and DD's 9th (she made all the penguins :))

badvoc

Toffee apple layer cake...

Cream together 175g of soft butter and 175g of golden caster sugar until creamy. Mix in 3 eggs, 175g of self raising flour and 1teaspoon baking powder until smooth. (I had to add a drop of milk here as the mix was a bit too stiff)

Split the mix between two cake tins, and scatter diced up apple on top of each tin. (I used two apples, one per tin) Sprinkle 50g of dark brown sugar on top of each mix.

Bake at 180c for about 30-35 minutes. Cool completely.
Whip up 200 mils double cream and fold in mini fudge bits - I used 3 finger of fudges chopped into tiny cubes.

Use this cream to sandwich the two cakes together - then for added fancypants I sprinkled with icing sugar and edible glitter!

Thanks so much x
I must try this at the weekend...

stealthsquiggle · 17/03/2014 20:26

Ok, does anyone have an interesting flavoured cupcake recipe that I can borrow for a sport relief bake off or shall I just go with the colour and do red velvet ones? I intended just to sign up for a big cake but I had my arm twisted into doing cupcakes too and am completely devoid of inspiration.

AlpacaPicnic · 17/03/2014 20:32

Cigarettes - I imagine that would work just fine. Use gel or paste colour instead of liquid though. Otherwise the cake might be too runny...

Meers - you asked about the chocolate orange checkerboard cake? I actually just used a basic chocolate sponge mix, and a normal sponge mix but grated some orange zest in, with a little orange food dye to tint it. Then I made a chocolate ganache to stick it all together with.

The tricky bit was cutting out the middles evenly. If you google for instructions, you should find some videos showing you how to do it. You can do it another way, by piping the cake batter in the tins in concentric circles, but I found it easier to cut out the rings and stick them together.

I never realised quite how much I love looking at pictures of cakes until this thread! They're all brilliant. My toddler would love the monkey one, especially with the foam bananas around it - genius idea that I may have to steal
Alpaca thanks so much for the checkerboard cake instructions, will definitely give it a go.
The toffee apple layer cake sounds amazing too. I'm going to have to try that one too!

Lovecat · 17/03/2014 21:12

I just love looking at cake porn!

I'm a happy amateur but I've had some valuable help with decorating from a talented friend so I no longer feel as inadequate as I did when I started a couple of years ago.

This is my most recent creation.

Amazing cakes from everyone.

This is one I just made for cake Dec class tonight, Eddies bears picnic.

Lovecat · 17/03/2014 21:47

I stole the idea from the internet, I'm afraid, Alpaca Blush - the cake, once carved, was covered in buttercream made with very pale butter and some icing whitener in the mix, then I grated white chocolate all over it. You can apparently get the same effect with dessicated coconut but I knew that at least 2 people at the party had a coconut allergy/intolerance/couldn't stand the stuff so white choc was the safer option.

married that's lovely - are the bananas fondant with details piped on, or is it all royal icing?

Lovecat · 17/03/2014 21:48

Wow, nannycook, that's fantastic - so detailed!

nannycook · 17/03/2014 21:51

Thank you lovecat I've been working on it in class for a few weeks, everything is so tiny, tonight was putting it all together.
