What's the best cake you've ever eaten?

I'm 38+4 and craving cake, pastries and doughnuts like there's no tomorrow. It's made me think about what cake I could kill to stuff my face with right now and it's a toss up between banana loaf and this pistachio cake.

I made my very first banana and chocolate loaf last month and I think it might have been the tastiest thing I've ever made. And I had never had banana cake until a couple of years ago at 31 years old! Now I am totally addicted.

I was just wondering what's the best cake you've ever had and I am not adverse to a bit of food porn if you have a recipe/picture. I really don't want to wait another 31 years to discover that I've been missing out on something delicious!

Guinness cake with tons of icing. The chocolate cake is so dense yet so moist, you don't really taste the Guinness but it gives it a real depth of flavour and melts in the mouth. Superb.

I also love proper New York cheesecake, carrot cake and sometimes coffee/walnut type things. Marmalade cake looks interesting!!

Ooh yes I made a chocolate Guinness cake once! Really addictive dense texture. DH loved it and he's not generally fond of choc cake. I loved it and I'm not generally fond of Guinness Grin

hollyisalovelyname · 11/06/2013 11:33

Oh I don't think I'd like chocolate

hollyisalovelyname · 11/06/2013 11:34

Posted too soon. I don't think I'd liike chocolate Guinness cake. Guinness is very bitter.

EugenesAxe · 11/06/2013 11:43

holly - I'm a bit renowned for my chocolate Guinness cake skills; it doesn't come out bitter. As people have said it has the effect of cutting through the richness of the chocolate. It is very popular with men because it's not cloyingly sweet; the Guinness also makes it incredibly moist.

It does have shit loads of sugar in the recipe... really the bitterness doesn't stand a chance.

hollyisalovelyname · 11/06/2013 11:52

Thanks Eugene i shall google it.

CalamityGin · 11/06/2013 11:57

stop it you dirty cake sluts some of us are on a diet!

CMOTDibbler · 11/06/2013 12:04

My faves is one I've made (am gluten free, so not much choice commercially). v moist choc sponge with choc flakes in the cake, strawberry conserve, strawberries and fresh whipped cream.

IceNoSlice · 11/06/2013 12:18

CalamityGin Arf. I am a dirty cake slut indeed!

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 11/06/2013 12:18

Mrs Kilner's chocolate cake - home made gooey deliciousness and the lovliest cake I have ever had.
It must be about 30 years ago now, I wound up having tea and cake at her house through a weird concatenation of "friend of a friend" circumstances and still remember that cake to this day Grin
Mrs. K i- (riding for the disabled lady, mother of S and C) if you happen to be a MNetter and read this, I LOVE your chocolate cake Grin
(I was Fiona's friend from school all those years ago Grin)

  1. Chocolate and raspberry gateau. (Waitrose)
  2. Belgian chocolate cheesecake. (M+S)
  3. Bonne Maman Creme Caramel.
motherinferior · 11/06/2013 13:05

I made a chocolate raspberry cake the other day (using raspberry jam, incredibly easy) with a chocolate fudge icing and it was SO good...

ICBINEG · 11/06/2013 13:10

I made the cake pictured on my profile...it was a sticky ginger cake...but lets not pretend it was about the flavour Grin

LulaPalooza · 11/06/2013 13:13

Am I allowed to say our wedding cake? It was bloody awesome. Three big layers of chocolate cake, sandwiched together with fresh cream. White chocolate on the outside which looked like a sort of messy crown. More fresh cream on top of the cake with fresh berries on top of that.

I don't even like cake, particularly, but this one was amazing. The combination of chocolate and fresh berries, I think.

LulaPalooza · 11/06/2013 13:14

Wowsers! That cake is a work of art, ICBINEG. Amazing!

AaDB · 11/06/2013 13:16

My signature called is Elizabeth David's chocolate cake. It's made with almond and egg and is gluten free. I make it with ganache and server it with clotted cream, and berries

I LOVE the shop bought suggestions. I, remember I, used to get a pecan, cinnamon Danish pastry cake thingy with icing on that was yummy. It was frozen if I remember correctly but haven't seen one for years Sad Sad Sad .

Badgerwife · 11/06/2013 13:20

ICBINEG Shock I am in awe I can't even properly ice a cake

Rhubarb streusel cake made by me. Also great made with gooseberries.

LulaPalooza · 11/06/2013 13:24

Have uploaded a pic of the wedding cake to my profile, I think.

It was chocolate mousse between the layers, not cream.

Badgerwife · 11/06/2013 13:28

Lula I don't think your profile is public, I can't access it

Motherinferior, I like the sound of your chocolate raspberry cake. Would you be willing to share the recipe?

My favourite cake is Swedish Princess Cake: three layers of sponge with a filling of confectioners custard, perhaps some jam, layer of whipped cream on top and all covered with marzipan. Yum!

LulaPalooza · 11/06/2013 14:04

Oops, sorry. Does that work now Badger?

Feel a bit silly now showing off about my wedding cake. It doesn't look that spectacular in the pic!

TeaMakesItAllPossible · 11/06/2013 14:11

I'm fasting and it looks truly lovely

motherinferior · 11/06/2013 14:27

It was this along with my usual fudgy icing (chocolate, bit of butter, bit of golden syrup, melted together - I do this in a jug in the microwave and slosh it over).

Sooooo easy and even my kids loved it.

Because of this thread I am going to make DS and his friends a lemon drizzle cake to take to 'Download' with them. I am having a major wobble about him driving for 3 and a half hours plus I will miss him as he won't be home until Monday.
