What's the best cake you've ever eaten?

I'm 38+4 and craving cake, pastries and doughnuts like there's no tomorrow. It's made me think about what cake I could kill to stuff my face with right now and it's a toss up between banana loaf and this pistachio cake.

I made my very first banana and chocolate loaf last month and I think it might have been the tastiest thing I've ever made. And I had never had banana cake until a couple of years ago at 31 years old! Now I am totally addicted.

I was just wondering what's the best cake you've ever had and I am not adverse to a bit of food porn if you have a recipe/picture. I really don't want to wait another 31 years to discover that I've been missing out on something delicious!

Favourite cake so far is bbc good food Squidgy Spiced Apple Cake. All sticky, with lots of cinnamon and nutmeg. It's best the day after you make it, served with clotted cream or ice cream. Yum!

Defo going to try some of these suggestions though.

Mmm cake [lip-licking emoticon]

Is there a Monday Fasting thing I'm not aware of? Anyway BetsyBell anything with mascarpone wins in my book. My sister makes the best Tiramisu I've ever had, but then she's a bit good, I don't think she's capable of making something inedible.

The best cake I've ever eaten was my dear late nan's chocolate cake, and I don't even like chocolate cake normally! Sadly she did not leave her recipe anywhere. Sad

My local Italian restaurant does the BEST tiramisu, other versions simply do not come anywhere close.

Cakes I make at home; my favourite is probably a simple sponge cake filled with lemon curd and cream, or bread and butter pudding.

Best cake ever was a pecan cake a friend made years ago. Have the recipe but I don't seem to be able to make it properly.

Nicest cake I ever made was a Blackforest Gateaux, when I didn't have any Kirsch I took the 56% rum from the Mulled Wine (Feuerzangenbowle) and drenched the sponges with it. It was absolutely delicious (and not for kids Grin)

I had an absolutely amazing carrot cake once but I can't remember where from Sad

Also an amazing lemon drizzle... mmm

rcs19 · 10/06/2013 19:17

My sister made an amazing cake for my mum's birthday. it was coconut (with Malibu in it) and smothered in chocolate ganache. I'm drooling thinking about it!

SconeInSixtySeconds · 10/06/2013 19:20

BikeRinSki A little judicious googling brings me to this recipe for the beetroot cake.

I wish I could make my gran's Victoria sponge. Or her cakey sultana scones. :(

Mind you no one else complains about my cakes!

Ooh let's see .... a few years ago we visited a friend on their farm in Devon. His mother had made us a fantastic classic boiled fruit cake served with a proper cup of tea. We'd popped in to see them with baby dd and it was such a treat for us, felt so looked after !

Then reading the thread some other wonderful cakes I've had the pleasure of sampling over the years .... lemon drizzle, some sort of banana loaf, and yes I've had that delicious chocolate beetroot one too, a dense chocolatey chocolate cake, a coffeee and walnut, an interesting seed cake in someone's garden as a child. I remember you all sooo well Grin
These days has to be with a good cuppa though Brew

SgtTJCalhoun · 10/06/2013 19:24

It was a slice of chocolate cake I bought in Walmart in Florida. It was topped and sandwiched with thick layers of fresh chocolate cream. It was stunning and the slice was so big that dd and I shared it for two nights running!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/06/2013 19:29

Many many years ago I had a delicious Black Forest Gateaux cakey thing from a resturant in Edinburgh (Cavios )

It had kirsch, cherries, chocolate sauce, cream, light sponge...Smile

The best one I've made is Christmas cake with Amarretto Marzipan (homemade). It can have the marzipan and icing stripped off and eaten with crumbly cheese.
Double mmmmmm

BaldricksTurnip · 10/06/2013 19:35

I'm ill at the moment and can't eat cake because it would inflame my condition... but as soon as I'm better, i.e. in about 3 days, I will be making one or two of the cakes mentioned on here Grin

GoldieMumbles · 10/06/2013 19:42

Esterhazy-torte once when we were on a weekend break in Vienna. God, I think I'm actually drooling.

lizzypuffs · 10/06/2013 19:42

Blueberry cake with blueberry and marshmallow topping - it was glorious. Unfortunately it was also in South Africa.

BaconKetchup · 10/06/2013 19:42

This is a bit of a cheat post because I've not actually tried it, but I've wanted to make this for ages

I just can't get excited about cake. Give me a gorgeous slice of bread or toast any day.

Am I allowed to nominate cheesecake? Or pavlova? Actually, thinking about it, it would be passionfruit and lemongrass pavlova for me.

BasketzatDawn · 10/06/2013 19:48

Oh, a cake thread. Yum!!

I've recently discovered Costa's lemon tarts, though did manage to walk past Costa today without going in - there is always tomorrow though. But even better is a cake I discovered recently in a branch of Cocoa Mountain - orange and lavender. Only 2 weeks till I'll be back near that shop, and I don't know how I'll cope if there is no cake.

NomDeClavier · 10/06/2013 19:50

Best easy access homemade cake - DH's microwave chocolate cake. Not a word of a lie.

hermioneweasley · 10/06/2013 19:50

My lemon and lime drizzle cake has had people giving orgamsmic groans

Gateau opera (French take on tiramisu) is wonderful.
