What's the best cake you've ever eaten?

I'm 38+4 and craving cake, pastries and doughnuts like there's no tomorrow. It's made me think about what cake I could kill to stuff my face with right now and it's a toss up between banana loaf and this pistachio cake.

I made my very first banana and chocolate loaf last month and I think it might have been the tastiest thing I've ever made. And I had never had banana cake until a couple of years ago at 31 years old! Now I am totally addicted.

I was just wondering what's the best cake you've ever had and I am not adverse to a bit of food porn if you have a recipe/picture. I really don't want to wait another 31 years to discover that I've been missing out on something delicious!

I love love love jamaican black cake. Mmmm I really dislike christmas cake/fruit cake but because the dried fruit is all blended and because of all the rum it really goes down well

this is going to sound really poncey but It was from a french patisserie it was a choux bun it was huge and delicious and orgasmic never in my life have I enjoyed a cake so much

We had a meal in a seaside cafe in N. Wales, a few years ago. Perfectly nice meal but for desert I had a treacle tart with thick cream. Thick treacle filling, it was delicious.

That French patisserie choux thing has got a particular name I think? A nun's something?

Oh tha reminds me of a cannoli I had from an Italian deli last year. Mmmmmmmm

I am not a great cake fan!However recently made a chococino cake from the BBC good food website(sorry don't know how to link).If you like chocolate and coffee this is the best cake ever!
NB If you do make it use less water to make the coffee otherwise the icing will be too wet.

I agree bakingnovice, homemade is best. I refuse to eat chocolate cake when out and about, it never tastes as good as it looks.

I have a chocolate brownie topped with chocolate meringue recipe to try.

From one of the threads on here I found a brownie shortbread biscuit recipe. It is amazing.

oh yes, cannoli, there's an amazing Italian deli in, wait for it, Romford, Essex (where I used to live, I know, I know...) that does proper cannoli, they're the real deal.

How I love cake.

The best cakes I have had recently are these cupcakes. Sticky toffee (they contain dates) with salted caramel icing. I have had to stop making them because I ate too many and began to get flabby:

One from the Green and Black cook book. It's basically chocolate mousse on top of chocolate ganache.

Condensed milk cake made by Russian lady at local cafe. Looks a bit splatty and plain but is oozy divineness. I will bless forever any MNer who knows the recipe...

The best pastry I've ever eaten was a Limburg-style cherry flan (a particular type of open, latticed fruit pie made with sweet yeast dough and creme pattisiere), served by a small cafe operating out of an ancient castle in Belgium.

I made a lemon sponge with the children, half then egg went all over them worktop, the DC licked things before they put them in, and it was awesomely good. the sponge was so light, and the lemon cream I googled how to make 15 seconds before I made it was superb

Was the cafe Russell's? Half way up the market place on the right as you go up? Near the old fashioned chemist, opposite the newsagents?

I love a serious buttery fruit cake full of booze but the best thing I make is a plain vanilla sponge filled with and covered in a serious bit of mascarpone & chocolate cream (ie buttercream made with mascarpone instead of butter). It's also excellent made with dark orange chocolate.

Oh but the pineapple, ginger and carrot cake was a serious contender too, hope I saved that recipe. mmmm.
