What's the best cake you've ever eaten?

I'm 38+4 and craving cake, pastries and doughnuts like there's no tomorrow. It's made me think about what cake I could kill to stuff my face with right now and it's a toss up between banana loaf and this pistachio cake.

I made my very first banana and chocolate loaf last month and I think it might have been the tastiest thing I've ever made. And I had never had banana cake until a couple of years ago at 31 years old! Now I am totally addicted.

I was just wondering what's the best cake you've ever had and I am not adverse to a bit of food porn if you have a recipe/picture. I really don't want to wait another 31 years to discover that I've been missing out on something delicious!

Ice - I made the Nigella one and one of the nice things about it was, it wasn't too sweet. However I don't think I could have coped with it being any less sweet. But then I've got a very sweet tooth.

Icenoslice, I second the vote for Nigella's guiness cake.

I have also made a list: coconut bread, chocolate raspberry cake and condensed milk cake. I've forgotten who mentioned the condensed milk cake but I've found two recipes online and I'm willing to do the research for you Grin.

Whilst online I also saw something called Donauwellen torte. White sponge with chocolate sponge waves with cherries in, topped with a layer of buttercream and then looks like chocolate ganache over the top . Has anyone made one of these?

Hi all,

What a fabulous thread - we've moved it to Food and Recipes now as we wouldn't want it to disappear. Grin [hungry]

Another vote for Nigella's Choc Guinness Cake or Nigel Slater's Chocolate BrowniesSmile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/06/2013 12:59

Nigella's Guinness cake is bloomin' brilliant.

Badgerwife · 12/06/2013 13:27

ooh goodie Rebecca!

I've just had a very nice blackcurrant and lemon cake at the tea room round the corner from my house. I love it when there's a generous layer of buttercream/whipped cream or whatever in the middle. DD liked it too, although she did say 'e yuk' to the fresh blackcurrant, and it wasn't even sharp! No picture though, it didn't last long enough!

WantAnOrange, on the offchance you're still on this thread, could you possibly post/link to your slow cooker sticky toffee pudding? Many thanks :)

BaconKetchup · 12/06/2013 17:06

I have just been reminded of a fantastic chocolate orange cake I once had

Jergens · 13/06/2013 05:41

I have become addicted to rhubarb and orange cake. It was in BBC Good Food mag a couple of months ago and I tweaked it to make it gluten free. Taste sensation!Smile

IceNoSlice · 13/06/2013 12:20

OMG. I made Nigella's chocolate Guinness cake this morning. I've eaten two slices already. At 430 calories a slice. It's all the fault of this thread. Angry Wink

CalamityGin · 13/06/2013 18:28

oh god, you lot, you're driving me crazy ... ice post me a bit will ya Grin

The best cake I had eaten was in turkey, they brought it out to celebrate my DH proposing to me.
It was a sponge cake with a thick cream centre with fruit in the middle (the cream was mixed with banana and vanilla) and strawberries were added ontop.

Slow cooker Sticky toffee pudding

Ooh, thank you!! Grin

My favourite one is Bakewell Cake, probably because I am almond mad and so are my family!

My Fave Bakewell Cake

Vibbe · 25/06/2013 14:36

My favourite is brunsviger.
It's basically a sweet dough with a brown sugar topping. It's taken me quite a while to get it right - most home made versions have crunchy topping, and that's not how it should be.

Another favourite is carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and filling. It's less heavy and not as sweet as the brunsviger.

JulesJules · 27/06/2013 17:36

littleweeone I think this might be the Chococcino cake you mentioned:
Looks gorgeous

Loving this thread.

I think it's hard to beat a good brownie. I make choccy orange ones, mmmm,,,, Love Nigella's Guinness chocolate cake too. Oh and lemon drizzle cake... Oh and Mary Berry's Devonshire apple cake...

RedundantExpat · 28/06/2013 12:23

It may sound weird but a turkish spinach cake that I once ate in a restaurant in Oludeniz was amazing.

And I used to love my mum's cakes: Tarte Tatin (child of the eighties), an apple cake with sour cream and raisin topping, red currant merengue torte, german plum cake made with a yeasty dough.

I guess that's more than one...
