What's the best cake you've ever eaten?

I'm 38+4 and craving cake, pastries and doughnuts like there's no tomorrow. It's made me think about what cake I could kill to stuff my face with right now and it's a toss up between banana loaf and this pistachio cake.

I made my very first banana and chocolate loaf last month and I think it might have been the tastiest thing I've ever made. And I had never had banana cake until a couple of years ago at 31 years old! Now I am totally addicted.

I was just wondering what's the best cake you've ever had and I am not adverse to a bit of food porn if you have a recipe/picture. I really don't want to wait another 31 years to discover that I've been missing out on something delicious!

1996 I was on placement at Southhampton gemeral hospital, staying in actually not too bad hospital accommodation.

During that time I ate the best cake ever from a bakers in Shirley, it was lemon with lemon curd running through the sponge. wow

A lovely spiced strawberry cake with coriander and lots of ground almonds. Will try and dig out the recipe. Mmmmm. Am going to make it this weekend.

My ex's Mum used to make it, and luckily she gave me the recipe before I cruelly dumped him.

If you are a fan of croissants, I would say croissant cake is pretty phenomenal. I had it for the first time a few weeks ago and was blown away by its deliciousness. Sort of like bread and butter pudding, but in cake form, and with croissants not bread! Heavenly.

charitygirl · 10/06/2013 19:56

Just recently in France

Icing was salted caramel ganache, and inside were several layers but most germanely a salted caramel mousse layer and a dark choc mousse layer. And all on this featherlight, crispy shortbread base. I don't know how they did it.

The simple cakes are the best for me. Lemon drizzle, the bero orange cake, the bounty cake (coconut sponge covered in milk choc then sprinkled with more coconut), and the simple vicky sponge filled with cream and strawberries.

Love cake. And tea.

Barmix · 10/06/2013 19:58

ooh ooh The Marmalade Sponge pudding thing at The Three Chimney's restaurant on Skye. It's world famous y'know.

Oh. My. God.

I'm in London but I would walk five hundred miles just to lick the spoon Grin.

Cheesecake definitely counts Mintyy Pavlova's got eggs and sugar in it, it's 'part-cake'. I'd be happy right now with just whipped cream and strawberries, I've got such a sweet tooth.

Some of these links are making me drool. A red velvet cake that actually looks edible and moist? Who'd have thunk it!

And despite the fact that the cake looks delicious, I'm still a little scared of the beetroot Blush

Blueberry and lemon cake

Badgerwife · 10/06/2013 20:02

Actually I did go to a wedding a few years back (or a leaving do or something; well, an occasion anyway) and the dessert was bread and butter pudding, but made with croissants and brioche. No words can describe the scrummyness.

Honey cake plus Viennese coffee at the observation tower in Prague - just what was needed after an energetic climb up the hill in deep snow and minus 12 temperatures!

WantAnOrange · 10/06/2013 20:05

About a month ago I made a sticky toffee pudding in the slow cooker that was the best thing I have ever eaten, ever. It happened quite by accident, DS wanted to do some baking and it fit the ingredients I had in the cupboard.

EugenesAxe · 10/06/2013 20:05

I think probably chocolate and rose fudge cake. No recipe as it was at a stall at the Brecon Jazz Festival.

WantAnOrange · 10/06/2013 20:05

Oooo and have to add, Mars bar cheesecake. I cant decide between the 2.

blueberryboybait · 10/06/2013 20:07

Lizzypuffs - where in SA, if it's close I may hunt it down.

Malteser cake from the cake trolley in the Lobster Pot restaurant in Dublin and the chocolate ganache /mousse cake on a bed of what appears to be crushed cornflakes from The Butler's Pantry delis, also in Dublin. DELISH. Nothing comes close...... Well ok ....maybe a huge eclair or coffee slice Smile

Badgerwife · 10/06/2013 20:15

I want a slice of Summer Berry Layer Cake Envy.

I've put a pic on my profile of a cake I had in a restaurant in France a couple of years back, strawberries, dark chocolate, pistachio mousse and strawberry and mint sorbet. I still think of it as a Michelin-starred restaurant dessert but for a quarter of the price (I can only imagine, can't afford the luxury myself). That restaurant was amazing from start to finish though.

It was a kouign amman from a patisserie in Beg Meil, Brittany.
Basically a salted caramel pastry. Just lush. I put on a lot of weight when I go on holiday Grin

McBalls · 10/06/2013 20:29

Waitrose banana and passion fruit cake. I think you'd love it, op.

Badgerwife · 10/06/2013 20:36

banana and passion fruit sounds interesting! Thankfully there's a Waitrose in town, I can even walk to it (well, waddle anyway).

I'm gluten free so good cake is rare and very welcome :)
The best I've had is probably a slice of chocolate nemesis cake. Amazing. Just googled recipe and may have to make it even though dh doesn't like chocolate so I'll have to eat it all, shame

hazeyjane · 10/06/2013 21:39

Misty9 the cloud cake I linked to is gluten free and a-may-zing!

ivykaty44 · 10/06/2013 21:44

a very moist and lush ginger cake, it was divine but when I make mine it is good but not as good as this one I tasted once - I keep trying to make mine as good Grin it was very ginger and big crumbs but moist

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 10/06/2013 21:50

Best I've ever made was this Chocolate Brownie gateau. It was originally in BBC Good Food mag about 15 years ago, it's not on their website but this one is exactly the same (presume copied). Expensive though. I made myself one for my thirtieth birthday and was appalled when the ingredients cost about £12, fifteen years ago.

This is also pretty damned good Chocca mocha caramel cake

FriskyHenderson · 10/06/2013 21:55

A chocolate orange truffle cheesecake from Zizzis.

Best lemon cake I made was a Delia one with home made lemon curd. Mary Berry's sunday best chocolate fudge cake is my chocolate sponge of choice atm.
