What the world eats

I would like to think we eat like Italy or Mexico, in reality tis more like USA or UK

Shock at the amount of meat in the Australian photo!

AngloSvensk · 29/04/2013 15:47

Probably we're the German family but with a bit less beer and a bit more meat. :)

JugglingFromHereToThere · 29/04/2013 15:53

I think we're quite Italian ... but with less bread and more pasta - is that possible (I couldn't see theirs really) Agree with a PP, replace cola with wine. More cheese less meat than most as we're veggie. Surprised by general lack of veg in many. And so much meat in some - like Aus Shock
Very interesting site. Intriguing to wonder what some items were, and generally to see how families live around the world.

MiniTheMinx · 29/04/2013 17:04

Kuwait with no bottle drinks, more meat and less rice.

I thought the Ecuador picture looked sad, is that where they cook?

shufflehopstep · 29/04/2013 17:20

Similar to Australia in this house. We eat a lot more fresh fruit and vegetables than in the UK household pictured. It makes up about half the shopping trolley. I found the difference of quantities between some of the countries shocking.

duchesse · 29/04/2013 17:24

Those photos are beautiful- they remind me of that series a few years ago of people with all their possessions.

I was shocked again at the difference in quantities between the two African countries and Bhutan, and the obvious first world candidates such as the US and Britain. I think the Malian family is more than twice the size and has much less than half the food.

I think our shopping would like most like Italy's, both in content and quantities.

duchesse · 29/04/2013 17:25

But also we hardly ever have fizzy drinks.

Moominsarehippos · 29/04/2013 17:28

Turkey/Guatemala. How very odd. It's all those tomatoes, bread and olives! We don't eat much packaged food and I thought we were more like the Med diet!

The German table is sooooo ordered and neat! Just like me and my OCD (when it comes to things being all aligned and labels all facing the same way).

duchesse · 29/04/2013 17:29

Ah, I see that this photo series is by the same photographer as the possessions one.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 29/04/2013 17:57

Ooh, you couldn't do a link to the possessions one duchesse ?
That sounds great too

zamantha · 29/04/2013 17:59

so much cereal on the Brits table - packaged rubbish. Wish we did eat tables of veg and fruit - we try. Probably we are more on the carbs side of things with as much fruit/veg thrown in as poss and a little meat/eggs etc.

I eat too much cheese - which table was that?

Jux · 29/04/2013 18:01

A cross between Australia, Canada and Italy, I think. Less meat than Australia.

zamantha · 29/04/2013 18:03

Actually like Turkey or Canada.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 29/04/2013 18:07

I think I could identify with Guatemala too - lots of tasty veg, though we don't always do as well as that.

Mominatrix · 29/04/2013 18:12

Between Italy and France, but with no fruit juice.

gazzalw · 29/04/2013 18:13

France oh la la!

OvO · 29/04/2013 18:15

Cross between Germany and Australia, with no alcohol at all in my shopping.

duchesse · 29/04/2013 18:30

I can't find an actual site and I think he's turned it into a book now, but here's a link to someone else's site that has some of the possessions ones on it. If you google Peter Menzel and material world you should find quite a few in images.

bringonyourwreckingball · 29/04/2013 18:36

Oddly China looks closest to us but we eat a lot of Chinese/Thai/Japanese etc as I do the cooking and it's what I like.

duchesse · 29/04/2013 18:36

There's a better one here that comes with explanations.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 29/04/2013 18:36

Thanks duchesse - just off to click your links and google Smile

figwit · 29/04/2013 19:30

duchesse brilliant links, thankyou. I find these photos so interesting and powerful. They really show us the differences in lifestyles around the world.

Hullygully · 29/04/2013 19:45

Germany, Italy and France

LaTrucha · 29/04/2013 19:54

Probably Italy without the fizzy drinks as standard (we sometimes get htem if they're on offer).

It is quite breathtaking when you see Mali and Chad after all those masses of food.

ethelb · 29/04/2013 20:48

We are the most like the German's (DP) is Flemish -ish but with about 1% of the juice consumption.

Loved the look of the Turkish and other middle eastern country (Kuwait?) food shops. All that fish, veg, herbs and yummy bread. But so expensive here. ( I would have to add beer though).
