What the world eats

I would like to think we eat like Italy or Mexico, in reality tis more like USA or UK

We're sorta in between Mexico (but lot less coke), Germany and Italy, but kinda Canadian too. And partly Indian thrown in too - lots of spices etc.

Lots of fresh fruit and veg, some meat and some fish, mix of rice/pasta/potatoes, not a huge amount of bread, lots of milk and cheese, some fizzy drinks but lots of squash and fruit juice too, tea and coffee are staples, and some beer and wine as well. Not too much pre-processed food (but we are not saints with everything from scratch). DD would have (HM) pizza probably once a week.

I am currently working on clearing out cupboards, so realised that the German au pair is using a lot of tomato sauces (as that's what's run short of very fast) and almost no curries (despite loving them when we cook). So I need to work on the curries and Chinese sauces we have, as well as the wide variety of weird things that have been gathered over the years, and a glut of tinned coconut milk.

re: Japan - I am not sure if your average Japanese family even eats that much fish...

lots of packets is not surprising - although, looking at the photo, it looks like packets of buckwheat noodles, breadcrumbs, tofu, packets of miso soup, fish/seaweed/sesame mix for rice etc., so not exactly unhealthy.

The mum in the photo is holding a big bag of rice which is the staple food.

Veggies in season and local are not particular expensive in Japan, but fruit can be (compared to the UK)
Imported bananas are cheap-ish (100yen/60p for a bunch), pineapples are about £1.50 each, local oranges are about £1.30 for six, local strawberries about £2.50 a punnet

the famously expensive melons etc. (£100 -200 or more, each!) are not really for ordinary people - they are bought by companies as gifts for other companies etc. Or by the mega-rich.

Probably somewhere between Italy and Australia. Less meat and no soft drinks - only tea, coffee and water in our house! But a lot more bananas.

I did the grocery shopping yesterday and took a photo of my own. It was probably the most like Turkey or Italy, although nothing was really an exact comparison.

Very interesting link, really shows up the worlds food inequality well.

I can't really see us, but I suppose a Japan looks the closest due to the predominance of fish & i cant see any meat, but maybe a bit of France & Kuwait thrown in - that surprised me as I'd have guessed at us probably more in common with Greek & italian

Most like France, except I buy Coke that I drink myself. The DDs aren't really allowed fizzy drinks, but they're not particularly interested in them anyway. Which is just as well, because I'm addicted (embarrasingly)

Britian, sort of.

I notice a few surprising and/or interesting things (to me anyway).

For example Mexico looks balanced until you notice the amount of coke bottles lined up. Australia has loads of meat (their obesity is apparently worse than ours), Japan loads of packets but definitely the most fish (that doesn't surprise me - the packets sort of fit with the high tech image) and Germany seems to have loads of beer, wine and fruit juice.

I am also quite surprised that the Brits seem to have quite a small table compared with some of the Western tables. And not a lot of alcohol or fizzy drinks but loads of milk. We don't get through anything like that amount of milk in our house.

Wow, Turks do eat so healthy if those pictures are realistic (was true when I lived with them, too; large house full of vegetarians but the carnivorous 2 Turks + DH ate the most veggie-laden diets by a huge margin).

I think France/Germany/Poland/Canada are most like us.
Very scary how little volume of food the Chadean family had. :(

Very like Poland here except substitute wine for the Coke. And I make rather than buy bread. Not half as much chocolate bars though. And of course no Marmite in Poland.
